UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY D. JONES, 0F SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE BUFFALO-SPRINGFIELD ROLLER COMPANY, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
SUPPORT FOR SGARIFYING DEVICES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 23, 1921.
Application filed September 13, 1920. Serial No. 410,070.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY D. Jones, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports for Scarifying Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in scarifying devices of the kind which are connected to a road engine in a manner to be raised and lowered, and particularly relates to means for supporting the scarifying devices in raised position.
The object of my invention is to provide a support for the scarifying devices in their raised position of a nature which will obviate the danger of the devices being arred from their position on the support and dropping to the ground with consequent injury to the parts or to the pavement or road over which the machine is being transported.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a rear view of so much of a road engine and of the scarifying attachment as is necessary to illustrate my improvements, the improved support being shown applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the support.
The scarifying devices are of a kind substantially like that illustrated in my Patent No. 1,226,528, dated May 15, 1917. The devices are attached at the rear end of the tank 1 of a road engine. Upright frame pieces 2 and 3 are secured to the tank and carry at their lower ends bearings 4 in which is journaled a draft bar 5 to which is pivotally connected tool holders or arms 6 at the rear ends of which the tools 7 are clamped. The upper end of the supports carry a shaft 8 upon which is journaled the upper end of a fluid pressure cylinder 9, the rod 10 of the piston of which is connected to a yoke-shaped member 11 the arms of which are connected to cross shaft 12 supported by and connected at the rear ends of the tool holders, this cross shaft 12 also carrying at its respective ends gage wheels 13.
lifiy improved support consists of an arm 14 provided with a bearing 15 which is j ournaled upon the shaft 8 at one side of the cylinder connections. The upper end of the arm is provided with a handle portion 16 and the extreme lower end with a hookshaped portion 17 which may engage the under side of the yoke 11 which is shown in the present case as of a T-shape in cross section as shown in dotted lines in Fi 2, but may be of any other desired form. n order to prevent the yoke from being jarred from the hook-sl1aped part of the support 14:, there is provided a latch 18 pivoted to the arm 14 just above the hook-shaped portion thereof, the extreme outer end of which has a nose 18 to engage the rear side of the yoke. In order to manipulate the latch to release the yoke therefrom, I connect it through a rod 19 with a small lever 20 pivoted to the rear side of the arm 1 1'; a flat spring 21 interposed between the arm 14 and the lever, serving to hold the latch in its engaged position. The nose 18 of the latch is beveled at its rear end so that when the arm 14 is swung to supporting position, the beveled nose of the latch, striking the yoke, will swing upwardly to clear the yoke until the arm has been swung to its proper supporting position, whereupon the latch will automatically swing down to the position shown in Fig. 2 and prevent the support from becoming disengaged from the yoke.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a scarifying apparatus, a series of scarifying devices arranged to be raised and lowered, a support for holding said devices in raised position, and a pivoted latch on said support for locking the same to said devices.
2. In a scarifying apparatus, scarifying devices arranged to be raised and lowered, a pivoted support having a hook-shaped end to engage and support said devices, and a latch for holding said hook-shaped part of said support in engagement with said devices.
3. In a scarifying apparatus, scarifying devices arranged to be raised and lowered and comprising a yoke-shaped member, a swinging support having hook-shaped ends to engage the underside of said yoke-shaped member, and a pivoted latch on said support arranged to engage the rear side of said yolireshaped member, for the purpose speci- In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of September, 1920.
