ERNEST ZEIDLER, F MARSHFIELD, WISCONSIN.
CHEESE-BOX.
To all whom t my concern Be it known that I, ERNEST ZEIDLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marshfield, in the county of Wood and State of lVisconsin, have inventedV certain new and useful Improvements in Cheese Boxes, of
' which the followingy is a specification, refer-r ence being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The Y invention relates to cylindrically shaped cheese boxes, however, it is applicable to various types of boxes and has for its object to provide a metallic band angular `shaped. in cross section, which metallic band is disposed on the edge of the cover or body of the box in such a manner that oneof its flanges may be secured to the cover or bottom of the box in a channel of which cover or botto-m the flange of the cover `or the wall of the body of the box is disposed and held by the other flange of the band, said flange being provided with an annular bead which registers with the edge of the cover or the edge of the bottomof the body of the box, but arches the same in such a manner that the flange of the band secured tothe flange of the cover or the wall of the body of the box will exert an inward pressure on said flange or wall for holding said flange or wall of the cover or bottom of the box. It
Vhas been ,found that by so reinforcing flange expands incident to dampness or contracts incident to dryness, the joint will 'be maintained in a tight condition. VIt has also been found that Vwhere the bands are split and placed in position and the ends thereof drawn together, that the flange of the cover or Wall of the box will be forced tightly into the groove of the cover or the bottom of the body of the box thereby insuring a tight joint. n
A further Objectis to provide a head for a cylindrical box comprising a disk of wood and a disk of brous material commonly called wall board, said disk of fibrous mate-l rial being of smaller diameter thanthe disk of wood and adapted to be concentrically disposed thereon, thereby forming an annularvgroove adjacent the periphery of the Vwood disk for the reception of the marginal cured thereto and so shaped as to engage said wall and hold the same in the annular groove.
With the above Vand other objects in view the invention resides n thecombination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may` be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention. l
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the box.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 2-2 of-Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a detail vertical sectional View through onesde of the cover and a portion of the body vof the box.
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view in perspective of one side of the body of the box, showing the bottom thereof formed from a single piece of material.
l Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of a portion of one ofthe metallic bands.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the body of the box and 2 the cover therefor. The box is a cylindrical one and the body 1 thereof comprises a cylindrical portion 3 formed from fibrous material and the bottom 4. Bottom 4 is formed from disks 5 and .6, the disk 5 being preferablymade ofwood, and the disk 6 of fibrous material, commonly known as wallboard. Disk 6 is smaller than the disk 5 and is concentric'ally disposed thereon, thereby forming an annular channel 7 whichfreceives the lowerrend of the wall 3, and in*l vSpecification of Letters Patent. Patented Allg. 23, 1921. I Application filed February 7, 1921. Serial No. 443,528.
` baud 8 in place, but also securing the disks 5 and 6 together so that they will reinforce each other. Passing` Vthrough the flange 10 are staples l2, which also pass through the Wall 3, thereby securely holding said wall at its loivcr end in the channel 7.` It has been 'found however, that incident to dampness the'Wall will expand and When dried Will contract,-and when so contracted, looseness develops in the joint; therefore to obviate this difficulty, the flange 10 is provided adjacent itslower end With'an annular bead 13, whichv arches the periphery 14 Vof the bottom l in such a manner that the flange 10 does not engage with the same. By this construction Vit will be seen that after the `band has been placed in position and its ends 15 and 16 drawn together, that said ilangel() Will force the lower end of the wall 3 into binding engagement with the Wall 17 of the channel Tafter which the ends are preferably spot Welded as at 18 for securely holding them together and then the flanges 9 and 10 are stapled at 11 and 12. It will be seen that there-is a. binding engagement and a contracting force on the *lower end of the wall 3 at all times either when the Wall expands or contracts. f
By referring to Fig. 4 in which a sectional view is shown through one side of the cover 2, the construction is the same With the exception that the flange 1() of the metallic band 8 is secured to the flange 19 of the cover, said flange 19 being preferably formed from fibrous material or Wall board, and the numerals applied to said figures are the same. v
Referring to Fig. 5 wherein a modified forni' of bottom is shown, it will be seen that the bottom is formed from a single piece of material, preferably Wood, and that the other construction is the same as that shown in Fig. 3. f
From the above it Will be seen that securing means is provided for a cylindrical box edge thereof in an annular groove in the bottom of the box.
3. The combination with a receptacle having a wall disposed in an annular groove of a receptacle head, said head being cylindrically shaped, said groove of the head being 105 formed by superimposed disks of different diameters, an annular band having substan-A tially right angularly disposed flanges, one
Y of said flanges being secured to the receptacle head and the other flange to the cylindrical Wall, and an annular bead carried by the Wall secured flange, said bead having its inner side spaced from the edge of the lower disk forming the head.
4. A cylindrical box body comprising a cylindrical Wall and a disk'shaped bottom, said bottom being formed by superimposed disks, one of said disks'being smaller. than the other thereby forming an annular groove for the reception of the cylindrical Wall, an annular band for securing said bottoml and Wall together, said band being provided With right angularly disposed flanges, one of said flanges being secured to the bottom, the other flange being secured to the Wall, and an annular bead carried by the Wall secured flange and having its inner side spaced from the periphery of the bottom. i
5. The combination with the body of a box comprising a cylindrical Wall disposed in an annular groove 0f a disk, of means for securing said Wall and disk together and holding' the Wall in the annular groove, said means comprising a band right angular in Cross section and having' one of its flanges secured to the disk and one of its flanges secured to the Wall, and a bead carried by disk.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aix my signature.
ERNEST ZEIDLER.
