Be it known that we, SAMUEL E. MORRAL and TILLIAM W. MORRAL,; citizens of the United States, residing at Morral, in the county of Marion and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Husking Devices, of which thefollowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying-drawing.
This invention relates to corn husking devices and more particularly to ear removing deviceswhich are used in connection with the husking devices. The object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind with means for delivering a stalk of corn, with the ear attached, to the device which removes the ear from the stalk; and which will properly position the ear with respect to said removing device.
A further object of the invention is to provide such a device which will separate the ear from thestalk and deliver the ear to the husking devices without mutilating the stalk. i
A further object of the invention is to provide such a device which will be simple in its construction and operation and which can be produced at a relatively low cost.

In Figs. 1 to 3 of these drawings we'have illustrated one form of our invention and have shown the same embodied in a corn husking machine comprising a main frame 1 upon which are. mounted earremoving devices 2. 'These ear removing devices are arranged at a'point remote from the forward edge of the frame. and substantially midway between the ends thereof. The operators station is in front of the machine and the frame may, ifdesired, be provided with a supporting bracket 3 to support a quantity are in the form of snapping rollers and the conveyer for the stalks of corn comprises two oppositely rotating rollers 4 and 5 which are connected with the respective snapping rollers for rotation therewith. The rollers 4 and 5 are arranged one above the other and, in the present instance, provided with spiral ribs forming grooves, which engage the stalk of corn and move the-same lengthwise of the conveyer rollers toward the snapping rollers and at the same time move the stalk transversely of the conveyer rollers to bring the butt of the car into engagement with said rollers so that it will be in a proper position to be engaged by the snapping rollers when the stalk has reached the end of the conveyer rollers. The
conveyer rollers may be arranged in various ways, but in this form of the device the upper roller 5 is somewhat shorter than the lower roller and has its outer end suspended above the lower roller and tapered so that a stalk of corn may be placed over the lower roller and moved between the two rollers into a position to be engaged by both rollers.
In thepresent construction the outer end of the upper roller is not provided with individual supporting means, but is supported solely by the hearing or bearings for the op posite end thereof. The main frame is provided with a table top 11 extending on opposite sides of the conveyer rollers to support the ends ofthe stalks of corn.
The conveyer-will move the stalks bodily across the table, but we prefer to provide supple- -menta1 conveying means to move the ends of the-stalks so asto maintain each stalk in a substantially straight line. As here shown, thesupplemental conveyors comprise sprocket chains 6 having fingers 7 and extending'about'sprocket wheels on shafts 8 arranged along the front and rear edges of the table and so mounted that'the upper stretches of the conveyer chains will lie beneath the tabletop and the fingers 7 will compartment 9 in which the stalks of corn are bunched. The separated ear drops throu h an opening in the table top, which is bro en away in Fig. 3 and is delivered to suitable husking devices which are here shown as husking rollers 10. These rollers are arranged'in an inclined position beneath the table top and act upon the ears of corn in a well known manner to separate the husks therefrom.
Any suitable driving mechanism may be provided for operating the several parts of the machine. As here shown, a main driving shaft 12 is mounted in the lower part of the frame 1 and has secured thereto a belt pulley 13.- This shaft 12 is connected at one end by suitable gearing with a vertical shaft 14 which, in turn, is geared to the lower conveyer roller 4:. At its opposite end the shaft 12 is connected by suitable gearing with a vertical shaft 15 which, at its upper end, is geared to the end of a shaft 16 forming an extension of the upper conveyer roller 5. The conveyer chains 6 are driven by means of a vertical shaft 17 gearedto the driving shaft 12 and to the conveyer shaft 8.
'The husking rollers 10 are connected one to the other at their upper ends by spur gears 18 and one of the rollers is connected by beveled gearing with a shaft 19 journaled in a frame 1 and driven from the driving shaft 12 by a sprocket chain 20.
In Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings we have illustrated a slightly modified form of the invention and have shown the same as comprising a frame 21 having mounted thereon and extending transversely thereof two conveyer rollers 22 and 23 arranged one above the other and having secured thereto'at one end thereof snapping rollers "24:. These rollers are carried by the shafts 25, to which the respective snapping rollers are also secured, and which are journaled at their in ner ends on theframe 21 and are connected one to the othervby spur gears 26. One of these shafts extends beyond the spur gear and has secured thereto a belt pulley 27. The operation of the'invention, in the several forms shown, will be clearly understood from. the foregoing description, and it. will be apparent that we have provided very simple mechanism for moving stalks ofv corn to the ear-removing devices and for so posishown as mounted on a stationary frame, it i will be entirely obvious that this frame could be mounted on wheelsand conveyed from point to point.
While we have shown and described'cer tain embodimentsof the invention, we wish it to be understood that We do not desire reassess to be limitedto the details thereof, as va-- rious modifications may occur to a person skilled in the art.
Havingthus fully described our invention, What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, a rotatable ear removing device, a structure having means to support stalks of corn in horizontal position relatively to the opposite sides of the ear removlng'device and means operative substantially in the plane of said supporting structure for moving said stalk axially of'said ear removing device to aline the same therewith and also transversely of said ear removing device to bring the ear into engagement therewith while said stalk is supported in substantiallya horizontal position on said supporting structure.
2. In a device of the character described, a structure having means to support a stalk of corn in a substantially horizontal position, a rotatable ear removing device mounted on said structure, and means arranged in advance of said ear removing device to engage the stalk of corn'while it is in a horizontal position and ,move. the same transversely toward said ear removing device and to move said stalk in the direction of its length to bring the ear'into a position to be engaged by said ear removing device.
3. In a device of the character described, a structure having means to support a stalk of corn in a substantially horizontal position, ear removing rollers mounted on said structure, a conveyjer arranged in advance of said ear removing rollers to move a horizontal stalk of corn transversel to its length and substantially parallel with the axes of said ear removing rollers and to move said stalk of corn in the direction of its length to bring the ear-thereon into a position to be engaged by said ear removing device.
4. In a device of the character described, a structure having means for supporting a stalk of corn in a substantially horizontal position, an ear removing device mounted on said structure, and means arranged in advance of said ear removing device to engage a stalk of corn while the latter is supported in a substantially horizontal position by said structure and move the same transversely toward, the ear removingdevice and to move said stalk of corn in the direction of its length to bring the car into a positionto be engaged by said ear removing device.
5. In a device of the character described, a structure having means to support a stalk of corn in a substantially horizontal position, an ear removing device mounted on said structure, conveying rollers mounted one above the other on said structure to receive the horizontal stalk of corn between them and having spiral ribs formed thereon, and means for rotating said rollers in opposite directions to cause said stalk of corn to of corn in a substantially horizontal position v and a pair of snapping rollers carried by said structure and arranged one above the other, conveying rollers arranged in alinement with the respective snapping rollers and having spiral grooves, and means for rotating said conveying rollers in opposite directions to cause said stalk of corn to be moved both longitudinally and transversely relatively thereto while in a substantially horizontal position. 7. In a device of the character described, a structure having means to support a stalk of corn in a substantially horizontal position, a pair of conveying rollers mounted one above the other on said structure in substantially horizontal positions and having spiral ribs, meansfor rotating said rollers in opposite directions to move said horizontal stalk of corn both longitudinally and transversely relatively to the same, snapping rollers arranged at the discharge ends of said conveying rollers, and means for so supporting one of saidsnapping rollers above the other that the stalk of corn may pass between the same parallel with their axes and be discharged from said supporting structure.
8. In a device of the character described, a structure having means to support a stalk of corn in a substantially horizontal position, a pair of conveying rollers-mounted one above the other'on said structure in substantially horizontal positions and having spiral ribs, means for rotating said rollers in opposite directions to move said horizontal stalk of corn both longitudinally and trans versely relatively to the same, snapping rollers arranged at the discharge ends of said conveying rollers, and an arm carried by said supporting structureat a point beyond said snapping rollers and extending forwardly to form a support for one of said snapping rollers, whereby the stalk of corn may pass between the snapping rollers and beneath said supporting arm.
9. In a device of the character described, a structure having means to support a stalk of corn in a'substantially horizontal position,
a pair of conveying rollers mounted thereon,
one above the other and in substantially horizontal positions and having spiral ribs, one of said rollers having its outer end supported in spaced relation to the other roller, so that a stalk of corn may be placed transversely between said rollers, snapping rollers arranged at the discharge ends of said conveying rollers and means for actuating said snapping rollers and said conveying rollers to cause said stalk of corn to be moved both transversely and longitudinally to bring the ear into engagement with said snapping rollers.
10. In a device of the character described, a structure having means to supporta'stalk of corn in a substantially horizontal position, a pair of conveying rollers rotatably mounted on said structure and arranged one'above the other, said rollers having spiral ribs, the uppermost roller having oneend suspended above the lower roller to enable said stalk of corn to be placed transversely between said rollers, snapping rollers rigidlysecured to the conveying rollers'at the discharge ends thereof; and means to actuate said conveying rollers to move said stalk of corn both transversely and longitudinally thereof.
11. In a device of the character described, a supporting structure, a pair of conveying rollers rotatably mounted on said structure and arranged one above the other, said rollers having spiral ribs, theuppermost roller having one endsuspended above thellower roller, whereby a stalk of corn may be placed transversely between said rollers, snapping rollers rigidly secured to said conveying rollers at the discharge ends thereof, and conveyers arranged on opposite sides of said conveyer rollers to move the end portions of said stalk of corn along with that part thereof which is engaged by said conveying rollers. 1

In a device of the character described, a supporting frame comprising a main portion, conveyor rollers mounted on said main portion and having spiral ribs, snapping rollers rigidly secured to said conveyer rollers at their discharge ends, one of said conveyer rollers and its snapping roller being journaled on the main portion of said supporting frame, a shaft journaled on said frame, projecting above the main portion thereof and connected with the other conveyer roller and its snapping roller, and
means for actuating said conveyer rollers and the snapping rollers.

a: supporting frame comprising a table, con- I veyer rollers extending transversely of said tablc,'hav1n'g spiral ribs and adapted to receive a stalk of corn betweenthem and to impart both longitudinal and transverse movement to said stalkl of corn, snapping rollers arranged at the discharge ends of said conveyer rollers, said table having an opening therein adjacent to said snapping rollers, and huskingrollers arranged beneath said opening to receive ears of corn from said snapping rollers, said supporting, structure being so arranged that the stalks of corn discharged from said conveyer rollers may be moved-beyond said snapping rollers-and discharged from said table;

a supporting frame comprisingaoforward portion, a conveyer moving transversely of '85 said forward portion, said structure also comprising an uprightportion arranged in,--
the rear of-said forward portion and havng a forwardly extending part, a pair of ear removing devices supported respectively by said forward portion of said frame and the forwardly extending 'part'of said rearward port-ion thereof, whereby a stalk of corn maybe moved transversely of the forward portion of said supporting structure to bring the ear into engagement with said ear removing devices "and then; be discharged into a space between the forward and rearward portions of said structure.
