To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gronon B. Mass, a citizen of the United States. residing at Charleston, in the county of Kanawha and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Motometer-Guards, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to locking devices for automobile accessories, and consists in thecombinations and arrangements of elements hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the accompanying claims.
The invention has for its purpose to provide a locking device or guard for securely fastening a mote-meter to the radiator of a car in such a way that the same cannot be stolen therefrom and wherein the attachment does in no manner interfere with the function of the meter or ofler any obstruction to the pouring of water into the radiator.
The invention has for its further purpose to provide a safety device of this character which may be easily and quickly installed on a car without requiring any special skill, and which employs but few parts in its construction, to the end that the same may be manufactured in large quantities and at small cost.
The invention is shown b way of illustration in the accompanying rawing, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevational view showing the device in applied position;
Fig. 2, an elevatlonal view showing the manner of applying the guard to the radiator;
Fig. 3, a central sectional view of the guard per se; and
Fig. 4 is a detail view of the holding memher and showing the clamping screw mutilated.
Referring to the construction in further detail and wherein like reference characters designate corresponding views in the differ ent figures shown, 5 indicates the radiator of a car having the usual collar 6 providing the pouring opening, which is normally closed by the screw-cap 7; and 8 designates the moto-meter which is mounted on the closure cap] in the usual and well known manner.
he locking device or guard consists of a stem or extension 9 having a screw-threaded portion 10 ada ted to engage with the threads 11 of t e holding member 12, as shown.
The holding member 12 is of tubular structure having a split portion 13 and provided with a plurality of elongated openings 14, and a clamping screw 15 serves for binding the split end of the. tube to the threaded portion 10 of the moto-meter stem. To this end said screw 15 has a polygonal head 16 formed with a weakened neck portion 17 whereby said head may be broken off after the clamping screw 15 has been adjusted sufiiciently tight to bring the threads 10 and 11 in proper binding relation, as will be understood.
A bolt-like member 18 formed with a head 19 has swiveled connection with the holding member 12 by freely passing through the apertured lower end 20 thereof, and a crossbar 21 is pivotally connected to the bolt 18 by the pin 22. or in any other suitable manner. Said cross-bar 21 is formed preferably of tubular or U-shapcd cross-section to the end of giving the necessary strength with the minimum amount of material. The function of said cross-bar 21 is to prevent the withdrawal of the locking device through the pouring opening of the radiator collar 6 and to effect which said cross-bar normally lies in the cross-wise position shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
For convenience in attaching the device to the radiator of a car the cross-bar 21 is adapted to be brought into the position shown in Fig. 2, when it may be readily inserted through the pouring opening of the radiator, and to secure said cross-bar in normal position after insertion a detent is provided. Said detent consists of a pin 23 normally tensioned by the spring 24 to engage with the aperture 25 formed in said cross-bar; and said pin and spring (23 and 24) are contained within the recess 26 formed in the lower end of the bolt member 187 A spring 27 surrounds the bolt 18 between the cross-bar and holding member and has for its purpose to throw the cross-bar into its crosswise or normal position, whence said cross-bar may be engaged and locked in such position by the detent device. To this end the spring 27 seats against the shoulder portions 28 of the cross-bar which acts after the manner of a lever which is moved by the spring.
It will therefore be seen from the foregoing that the device may be easily and conveniently applied to the radiator of a car and being secured to the moto-meter will effectively prevent the removal thereof, inasmuch as any turning to unscrew the motometer will simply give on the swivel connection 18 and 20; and it will also be obvious that the device will in no way interfere with the operation of pouring water into the radiator.
- It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention, and the invention is therefore not limited to such features except as may be required by the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a holding member for the'motometer, aolt resiliently connected to said holding member, and a cross-bar for securing the holding member to the radiator mounted on said bolt, substantially as set forth.
2. A device of the character described comprising a holding member for the moto- I meter, a bolt resiliently connected to said holding member, a cross-bar for securing the holding member to the radiator pivotally mounted on said bolt, and a detent on said bolt for securing the crossbar in locked position, substantially as set forth.
3. A device of the character described comprising a holding member for the motometer, a bolt loosely connected to the holding member, a cross-bar pivotally connected to the bolt for securing the holding member to the radiator, a detent for locking the cross-bar to the bolt, and a spring interposed between said holding member and the cross-barv for automatically moving said cross-bar to lockin as set forth.
4. A device of the character described comprising a rigid holding member for the moto-meter, an inverted T-shaped locking elementadapted for convenient application to a motor radiator, and means for automatically rendering the locking element rigid when in applied position, substantially as set forth;
