T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. HAssKARL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented. new and useful Improvements in Fans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a hand fan and the object is to provide particular means for connecting the fan blade with the handle. such means including a frame, the ends of which are interlocked or interengaged and project into a socket portion in the ends ofthe handle, being there properly secured.
A further object is to provide, in an article constructed as indicated, a frame formed of a metallic channel element, the ends being brought together at a point near the handle, and being slotted or cut apart to permit of interengagement and the frame so constructed being secured within a socket portion at the end of the handle by means of a transverse pin.
A still further object is to provide in con nection with the element specified, a ferrule for the end of the handle, this element being slotted or notched for the accommodation of the diverging portions of the frame, and the aforesaid pin extending through the ferrule and so positioned as to securely engage the channel element at the point of intersection of the diverging ends of the frame, and thereby retain the frame in proper position with reference to the handle.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of elements hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that variations or modifications in the construction may be made within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Figure 1 is a front view of the fan.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a section showing the means for fastening the blade to the handle.
Fig. 4 is a detail view of the fastening means.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a frame comprising a continuous metallic element 10, preferably channel shaped in cross section and adapted to inclose and retain the element 12 forming the blade of the fan.
It is obvious that the shape of the frame is not important, but in order to illustrate the type of connection between the frame and the handle, I have illustrated a pear shaped frame, the side portions of which converge at 13 and 1 1 and intersect each other beyond the end of the handle. The ends of the frame are slotted or cut transversely as shown at 15 and interlock in the manner illustrated in Fig. 4, the extreme ends of the metallic strip projecting beyond the interlocking portions, as illustrated.
The handle is designated at 16 and the end thereof is provided with a recess or bore 17, the walls of which may taper as shown, this recess receiving the interlocked ends of the frame element 10. The extreme ends of the strip may engage the inner end of the bore and the adjacent side wall.
The handle is of reduced diameter as shown at 18, providing a shoulder 19 against which the ferrule 20 abuts. This ferrule is notched as shown at 21 and 22 for the accommodation of the side members 13 and 14 of the frame. A transverse pin 24 passes through the ferrule and is properly secured, the interlocked portions of elements 13 and 14: being between the transverse pin and the inner wall of the bore, with the result that the frame is retained in a fixed position and no independent element is required for connccting the converging portions of the strip of which the frame is formed.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the class described, a frame having inner end portions projecting in opposite directions, the elements of the frame intersecting, and being interlocked near the aforesaid oppositely projecting portions, a handle provided with a socket into which said projecting portions extend, a ferrule having notches formed in'the ends thereof for receiving and retaining the side portions of the frame; and means engaging the frame at the part where the elements thereof intersect, and engaging the aforesaid fcrrule, for retaining the frame in position. I
2. In a device of the class described, a frame formed of a metallic strip having a channel portion extending toward the inner part of the frame, an element constituting a fan blade fitting in and held fast by said channel portion, the extreme ends of the strip intersecting and interlocking, a handle having a socket in the end thereof and receiving said interlocked portions and scouring means retaining the interlocked ends in said socket.
