Imam/$011 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HAT AND FASTENER FOR SAME.
Application filed February 26, 1921.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
e it known that I, BERTRAND ISAAC EADDY, a citizen of the Dominion of New Zealand, and residing at 113 Grcenlane, R emuera, Auckland, in the Provincial Dlstrlct of Auckland, :1 subject of the Klng of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented certaln new and useful improvements in an invention entitled an Improvement Relating to Hats and Fasteners for Same, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hats and fasteners for same and its object is to provide an improvement whereby hatpins may be passed through'the same holes 1n the hat, each time they are used, thereby preventing disfiguration of the hat by the piercing of fresh holes therein each time the hat is worn.
According to the invention a device comprising a flanged spring dome containing central holes, and a female portion also containing a central hole and into which said dome is adapted to snap, is employed at one side of the crown of a hat a similar device being secured to the crown at a point directly opposite the first device.
Each device is secured to the hat by passing the dome through a hole in the material from one side and pressing the female portion on to the dome from the other side of the material, whereby the latter is firmly gripped in the device and the hole is pre vented from enlarging.
The invention will be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of a hat provided with the improvement and showing a pin passed through the hat.
Figs. 2 and 3 are slightly enlarged sectional views of the two parts of the device.
The device consists of a spring dome 1 provided at its smaller end with a flange 2 countersunk in the outer side and a female part 3 containing a circular recess 3 reduced in diameter at the entrance.
The dome 1 is adapted to snap into and be retained in the recess 3 and when the two parts are fitted together a central hole 4 in the female part 3 is in line with holes 5 formed centrally in the other or male part, in order that a hat pin may be passed centrally through the device.
In practice two of the devices are employed for each hat pin used, and they aresecured to the crown of the hat at directly opposite points.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 16, 1921. Serial No. 448,080.
To adjust the devices to the hat, openings (3 are made in the hat crown, directly opposite each other. The pin 7 is then passed through a dome 1 from the flanged side, and entered in an opening 6 from outside the hat whereupon a female part 3 and another flanged dome 1 are slipped on the pin -7 inside the crown in the order mentioned and as shown. The pin 7 is then passed through the opposite opening 6 in the crown and another part 3 is slipped on the pin 7 outside the hat.
n forcing the two parts of each device together the domes 1 are caused to project through the openings 6 and snap into the recesses 3 in the parts 3.
The pin 7 can then be withdrawn leaving the devices secured to the hat at directly opposite points the material of the crown being firmly gripped in each case between a flange 2 and a part 3.
Once the devices are adjusted and secured to the hat in alinement with each other as described. the pin 7 can be readily passed through them, the countersinking of the flanges 2 in the entrance sides of the devices, guiding the point of the pin 7 to the holes at and 5.
The devices can' be readily changed from hat to hat as required, and the exposed portions can be ornamented according to taste.
.Vhat I do claim and desire to obtain by Letters Patent of the United States is A device of the character described adapted for application to a hat, a compressible spring dome having a central pin receiving aperture. a laterally projecting flange carricd by the relatively small terminal of the dome having a countersunk portion, and an aperture adapted to receive a pin, and a socket member having a recess decreasing in diameter toward its open end adapted to re ceive and compress the dome, said socket member having a relatively narrow edge presented to and of less diameter than the flange and disposed in close relation to the latter whereby to firmly clamp a portion of the material of a hat to maintain the device in position thereon.
In testimony whereof I affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
