CROSSGUT-SAW EeUALIzER.
, To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRE E E. KILLIAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fillmore, in the county of Montgomery and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Crosscut-Saw Equalizer, of which the following visa full, clear, and exact description; i p
This invention relates toimprovements in cross cut saw equalizers, and more particularly to' an attachment for across cut.
saw which enables a single operator to efliciently operate the saw, giving him} the necessa'rypurchase and leverage so that he can effectually use the saw inrany cutting position.
A further object is to provide an equalizer which can be conveniently attached to any ordinary saw, which will be relatively cheap to manufacture, and which will most efliciently perform the functions for which it is intended.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts as willbe more fully hereinafter described and claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating my improved equalizer in position on a cross cutsaw. r a r Fig. 2 is an end view of the saw withthe equalizer thereon. e
' Fig. 3 is a'detail perspective View of the pointed out in the p handle end of the-saw with the equalizer handle in position on the saw; 1 1
1 represents a log and Q-anordin'ary form of cross cut saw shown in position for cutting the log. Thls cross cut saw is'provided,
v as is customary, with a handle 3 at one end which proj ects upwardly and'at rightangles to the saw. V
My improved equalizer comprises a pair of relatively long handles 4 and 5 having beveled outer ends 6 to which a spring strip 7 is secured :by bolts 8 or other attaching means. The handle 4 has a bifurcated end 9 which straddles one end of the saw 2 and is secured to the saw by means of a bolt 10 Specification of Letters latent. Patented Aug.,9, 1921. i Application filed February 10, 1921. Serial N o; 443,867. I i
and nut 11. The handle 5 also has a bifur- OFFICE. f
cated end 12 which straddlesthe saw 2 adj'a V cent the handle 3 and a relatively small metal plate 13 is secured tofthe extreme end of the bifurcated portion 12 of'handle 5 under the cutting'edge of the saw 2 soasto effectually hold the handle 5 in place.
lVhen the deviceis in use on a saw, the operator grasps the handle 31w1th one hand and the handle 5 with his other hand, and
by reason of these two gripping points, the
saw can be conveniently and effectually manipulated from one end. If occasion may require,. another operator may grasp the V handle 4- to assist in the operation,:but in most cases a single operator at the handle end 3 of the saw canconx' eniently operate the same to cut timber in any ordinary position.
Various slight changes mightbe made in the general formv and arrangement of the parts described withoutdeparting from the inventioinand hence I do not limit myself cated ends adapted to receive the respective ends of asaw and connected thereto,-said handles adapted to be disposed at an angle to the saw-bladeand having beveled outer ends, and a fiatspringstripsecured at its ends to the'beveled faces of the respective handles. 7 v p 2. The combination with a saw of the character described having ahandle at one end, of an equalizer independentrof thesaw and handleand comprisin a pair of equalizer handles bifurcated to receive the saw blade, a bolt securing one bifurcated end to the saw blade, a plate secured to the other bifurcated end and located against the toothed edge of the saw, and a spring con necting the freeends of theequalizer handles and holding'one of said equalizer hRlL dles against the saw handle.
