To all whom, it may concern.
Be it known that I, JAMES ALEXANDER FLANAGAN, a. British subject, and resident of the city of Toronto, in the county of York and Province of Ontario,Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feeding Mechanism for Sewing-lilachines; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
M y present invention relates to a specially designed feeding mechanism for sewing machines, this mechanism comprising a slide vertically reciprocated by the rotation of the looper shaft and a feed dog reciprocating vertically with the slide and having lateral reciprocating movement independently of it, imparted by the rocking action of the feed shaft.
For an understanding of the invention, 1 have shown and described it in connection with the feed and looper motions forming the subject matter of my application for Letters Patent, Serial Number 274902, filed February 4th, 1919, in which. the feed and looper shafts are in coaxial relation, but the invention may,- by alterations and changes within the scope of the claims, be adapted for other types of feed and looper motions.

The dovetail formation of the groove 7' and tongue 70 may be varied or modified from that shown in the drawings as any other type of a sliding connection between these parts may be substituted for those shown and described. Projecting from the feed dog Z is a pin m, which takes in an elongated slot 0 in the oscillating arm 6, the elongation of the slot 0 bein 'in a radial direction from the center of the feed; shaft and of sufficient length to provide for, the full vertical movement of the feed dog during its rise and fall.
In the feed slide 6 is a bore z" and fixed on the looper shaft is a cam 32, operating within the bore 2" and causing the rise and fall of the feed slide during the revolution .of the looper shaft and imparting to the feed slide a reciprocating movement.
The cam 72 is so timed and designed as to come into engagement with the top of the bore 71 and positively lift the feed slide 2' to its elevated position when the needle has delivered the thread to the hook and receded from the material. While the slide is in this position the feed dog is reciprocated forwardly by the action of the arm e. From the foregoing it Wiil be understood that during the revolution of the loopei shaft the cam p elternateiy comes into contact with the top of the bore 5 to raise the feed slide to the limit of its upwsrii reciprocetion, and momentarily maintain it stationery for the feed (ing to move the work forwardly, end-that when the Work has been fed forward for the next stitch the cam g2 comes into contact with the bottom of the bore enii causes the descent of the feed slide 2' to the limit oi its (iOWEiWztlti reciprocation, during which the feed (log; releases the imrii; and moves i'earvardly for the next stitch.
