srmsy WEIIGHING AND sAcxING MACHINE.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
lin retail establishments, such., as grocery stores, so that the work ofthe salesman shall be expedited and the necessity of touching the potatoes with his hands shall be avoided.
The object of the invention is to produce a machine of the character set forth which is eflicientand accurate inoperation, sanitary, and can be manufacturedvat low cost.
With this obj ect in view, the invention yconsists incertain novel and useful features `of construction andcombinations of parts as hereinafter `described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying ydrawin s, in which 2+ igure 1, 1s arfrontelevation of aself weighing and sacking machine embodying the invention. y
Fig. 2, is a view showing the machine in central vertical section except the weighing element thereof, which is in vertical ysection near one endtoavoid thenecessity ofk illustration of the internal mechanism of said element which'maynbe yofany approved suspension type.
3, is a top plan view of the machine.
Fig. 4, is a horizontal section on the dotted line IV of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5, is a vertical section of the weighing box or receptacle of the machine.
Referring now to the drawings, in detail, 1 indicates the four legs of the machine, corresponding front and rear legs being connected at their inner edges by thebrace bars 2, which in turn are connected near their front ends by lacross brace 3, a parallel cross brace 4 connecting the front ends of braces 2 and the front legs 1. The latter are also connected at their upper ends by a cross brace 5.
The bin or hopper of the machine consists.
of the sides' 5a, back 6, inclined bottom 7 and the front wall, the latter comprising the vertical portion 8 having a discharge opening in its lower end asat 8a, for the contents of the bin, and an upper portion 9 extending up- Speccation of Letters Patent.

wardly and forwardly to a vertical plane between braces 3 and 4, and notched at its upper corners at 10, for the accommodation of vertical frames forming the sides of the spacey for the weighing elements, said frames consisting of bars 11 and 12, secured togetherI and the former to the sides 5a and bars 12 to the rear edges of the front legs, the bars 11 b eing spaced slightly forward of the vertical portion 8 of the bin or hopper to provide the interposed vertical grooves 13 for the play of the slide door or gate 14, controlling the discharge opening 8 of the bin. f ,Secured to and depending below the plane o f the cross brace 5, and disposed at the rear side of the same, is a cross piece 15, and fitting vertically between the vertical frames mentioned and at the rear side of said cross piece, is a rectangular frame 17 through which the weighing markings are observable, said frame 17 having depending extensions 18, through which fastening devices extend into the sides 12 for retaining the rectangular frame in position. Fitting against the rear side of frame 17, is a weighing scale inclosing frame, consisting of uprights 19, horizontal top and bottoni pieces connecting the uprights and respectively numbered 20 and 21, and intermediate vertical uprights 22 as the more direct support for the face plate 23 of the scale mechanism, said plate having the customary dial markings and anl index finger .24 for cooperativerelation to .said markings'. The upper; cross bar of the weighing scalev inclosing frame, is extended laterally and rests upon the upper ends of the bars 12, which thus'serve as a support for the scale inclosing frame, the bar 2() being supported intermediate its ends, upon the wall portion 9.
Pivotally suspended at 25 from the scale, is a cross bar 25 having downwardly extending suspension rods 26 at its ends, carrying a box or receptacle 27; the rods extending through the end walls of the box and being engaged at their lower ends by retaining nuts 28. The box has a hinged dumping bottom 29, pivotally connected at oneA cally above said notch bearings 34 secured to the front wall of the box, accommodate a rotatable rod 35, which extends through said notch and is provided at its lower end with a crank or locking arm 36, and at its upper end with a crank or operating handle 3S. When the rod 35 is positioned as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, its cranks or arms project laterally, and the crank 36 underlies and holds the dumping bottom closed and the upper crank avoids interfering with the entrance of potatoes into the box, when the slide door or gate 1l is opened. By turning the operating handle 38 through a half circle, the dumping bottom is unfastened and free to swing down to open position and discharge its contents into and through the flexible funnel 39, to a sack or basket, not shown, for the convenience of the customer. F or easily effecting the opening and closing movements of the slide door or gate 14, a hand lever 40 is hinged to the front wall of the bin, and said lever is hingedly linked as at l to said door or gate.
When the gate is opened, potatoes fall into the box until the same is full or the discharge is checked by closing of the gate. The scale is watched and as t-he desired quantity of potatoes thus obtained and the supply cut off, the operator operates the locking rod to release the bottom and effeet the dumping of the contents of the box, as above explained. The lever 31 is then operated to reclose the bottom and thereby set the machine for the next operation.
From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced a machine embodying the features of advantage set forth as desirable in the statement of the object of the invention, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of the same, it is to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes' as properly fall within the principle of construction involved, and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A self weighing and sacking machine comprising a hopper having a front discharge opening, a vertically slidable door controlling said opening, a weighing device secured forward of the upper portion of the hopper, a bar pivotally suspended from the weighing device, a pair of rods depending from said bar, a receptacle secured to the lower ends of said rods, a hinged dumping bottom'for said receptacle, a rock shaft having a. crank arm for underlying and holding the bottom of the receptacle in closed position, and lever-actuated means for lim* iting the opening movement and for effecting the closing movement of said bottom.
2. A self Weighing and Sacking machine comprising .a hopper having a front opening, legs Vsupporting said hopper, vertical bars secured to the inner sides of the hopper forward of the front wall thereof to provide interposed grooves, a vertical door slidable in said grooves for controlling said discharge opening, bars secured to the firstnamed bars inward of the side walls ofthe hopper, a frame between the last-named bars, a weighing device fitting between said nast-named bars and against the inner side of said frame, and provided with a crossbar resting upon the upperedge ofthe front wall of the hopper and the second pair of bars mentioned, a' vertically movable receptacle forward of the hopperand below the plane of the discharge opening thereof and suspended from said Weighing device, a funnel depending from said receptacle, a dump ing bottom for the receptacle, and manually operable means forl holding the bottom in closed position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
