Description
SLGWYNN. Journal Box Linings. NO. 138,642, 4 Patented May 6,?1-873.

UNITED STATES PATENT O STUART GWYNN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE METALINE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN JOURNAL-BOX LININGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 38,642, dated May 6, 1873; appl on filed February 3, 1873. I
.To all whom it may concern: i
Be it known that I, STUART GWYNN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new manufacture, the same being an Improved Lining for Journal-Boxes and other rubbing surfaces, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of the same.
On the 12th dayof April, 1870, certain Letters Patent of the United States were issued to me numbered from 101,862 to 101,869, inclusive, for certain compositions of matter denominated Metaline, and for the process or method of making the same, as also the ofiices it performs, to which reference is made. The invention herein intended to be described and claimed relates to a special mode of applying the said several kinds of metaline, or
any of them, or their equivalent, to practical use; and consists in a combination of metaline with the material, in the man ner and for the Vpurposes hereinafter particularly described.
Figure 1 is an edge view of Va corrugated sheet of metal, the oorrugations being iilled with metaline--the iirst step in the process of making my new manufacture. Fig. Z is a perspective surface view of the same. Fig. 3 is an edge View of the same after being subjected to pressure. Fig. 4 is a perspective surface view of the latter.
In fabricating the article intended here to be described, I take a sheet of suitablev metal,
vpreferably of copper or brass, and corrugate it, filling the corrugations with varieties of metaline describe of April 12,\1 Z0, hereinbefor referred to, or their equivalent, the corrugati s being preferably formed so that the met on one side is turned down at right angles t the surface of the sheet, while the other is i` clined to form the corrugation, whereby th corrugations, when the sheet is subjected t pressure, will all fold down upon the sheet nd all in one direction. The sheet thus pr pared is then subjected to great pressure, ither between plane surfaces or suitable corr gated rolls, or both, by which the corrugati ns are folded down upon the sheet, and th metaline that is heldin the folds compress and consolidated, a portion of the met ine being exposed on the surface of the c mpleted sheet at the top of each of the fol thereby presenting a rubbing'surface of taline.
Journal-box lining thus fori d may be cut into strips and laid in recess made in the face of the box, or the entir1 face may be lined with it. It can, of cours` be applied to plane rubbing surfaces as ll as for the bearings of revolving shafts. What I claim, as a new ma ifacture, is-
A sheet of corrugated me l with which is incorporated metaline, subs, ntially as and for the purposes specified. l
