UNITED LSTA'ILES PATENT, OFFICE.
LOUIS nor'rnnr, or ELMIRA, NEW YORK DRAFT FOR TRACTOR-FLOWS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2, 1921.
Application filedDecember 15, 1920. Serial No. 431,211.
residing at Elmira, in the county of Chemung and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Drafts for'Tractor-Plows,'of which the following is a specification. I
The primary object of the invent1on is the provision of a draft connection especially designed for tractor plows although serviceabl e wherever a plurality of members are to be pulled forwardly, the structure providing flexibility and selfalinement of the drawn members. I A further object of theinvention is the provision of a draw point for tractor plows, permitting vertical and slight lateral adjustment of the plows during travel whereby two plows may be employedas a twoway plow for side-hill work. I.
A still further object of the invent on 1s the provision of a flexible self-alining draw point for two plows resulting n the automatic positioning of the plow 1n cond1t1on for work upon the land over which the device travels regardless of the contour of the land such as the sloping position thereof.
Vith these generalobjects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing and in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In the drawing Figure 1 is an elevational view of a plow beam provided with my invention a portion of the beam and plow being illustrated by dotted lines,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof,
3 is a horizontal sectional view of the same and c Fig. 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken upon line IVIV of Fig. 1.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, my invention broadly consists of draft connection 10 resiliently and pivotally carried between the forward extensions 11 of plow beams 12 whereby two plows 13 such as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawing are forwardly propelled by connecting up the draft connection 10 with suitable traction means such as a tractor, not shown. A dished disk 13 is secured to the inner face of each extension 11 by bolts or-similar hold-fast devices 1 1 with ribs 15 upon the outer faces of the disks 13 directly engaging the inner faces of the extensions 11 thereby slightly spacing the disks 13 therefrom. V
The draft connection 10 includes an annular or wheel-shaped body 16 adapted for receiving the disks 13 within the opposite sides thereof in contact with the circular central web 17 of said body 16, with the annular edges 18 of the disks 13 engaging the oppo site faces of the web 17 and with the heads 19 of the bolts 14 accommodated within the inner d shed sides of the disks 13 and spaced from the web 17 A journaling shaft 20, here illustrated in the form of a bolt projects through a central perforatlon 21 of the web 17, central perforations 22 of the disks 13 and through corresponding perforations 23 in the extensions 11. Coil springs 24 surround the shaft 20 outwardly of the extensions 11 being seated upon the washers 25 carried by the shaft;;20 in contact with the extensions 11 and similar washers 26 upon the shaft 20 ad acent the opposite outer ends of the shaft. which ends are provided with a head 27 and a threaded nut 28 respectively.
' An attaching plate 29 is carried by the body 16 with a plurality of perforations 30 for the attachment of clevises, chains or other suitabl means not shown, for attaching the same to a tractor or other power device.
The complete operation of the invention will be fully understood from this detailed description thereof, the draft connection 10 being hauled forwardly drags the plows having the plow beams 12 and permits relative vertical shifting of the plows during forward travel. Slight lateral adjustment is also permitted the springs 24 serving to automatically return the beams 12 to their normal parallel positions. The connecting device is in this manner rendered flexible and connects the plow beams for self-alinement during operation, the upward and downward movements of the plow having no efiect upon the firm attachment for draft purposes between the plow beams 12 and the draft connection 10.
A serviceable device is provided and while the form of the invention herein set forth is believed preferable, it will be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope 7 of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is r v 1. A draft device for plow beams comprising disks adapted for rigid attachment to the beams,1a connectingmember having a circular body within which the dlsks are normally positioned and resilient ournahng 7 connections between said disks and body.
2. A draft device for plow beamscomprising disks rigidly secured to the inner 'faces of the beams, a wheel-shaped body with the disksnormally seated within the opposite sides thereof and journaling connections between said disks and body.
3. A draft device for plow beams comprising disks rigidly secured to the inner faces of the beams, a wheel-shaped body with the disks normally seatedwithin the opposlte sides thereof, ournalmg connections between said disksand body, a journaling shaft centrallyprojecting through said disks and body and resilient means adjacent the outer ends of the shaft adapted for permitting slight lateral play between the beams during operation. 7
l. In combination with plow beams, forward extensions carried thereby, dished disks rigidly secured to said extensions slightly spaced inwardly thereof, a wheelshaped body having a central web and adapted for overlying said disks when the ClGVlCElS assembled, and a ournalmg shaft axially positioned throughsai'd web and shaped body having a central web and adapted for overlying said disks when the device is assembled, a journaling shaft axially positioned through said web and disks and, projecting through said extensions-springs encircling the opposite end portions of the shaft tensioned between said extensions and the end portions ofithe shaft and an attaching plate carried by said body.
6. A device of the class described comprising plow beams, forward extensions can ried thereby, dished disks having rib por- V tions upon their outer faces engaging the inner faces of the extensions, bolts secured through said disks and extensions with the inner end portions of the bolts within the inner dished portions'of the disks, a wheelshaped, connecting body surrounding said disks with a' central web in normal contact with the inner edges of the disks and journaling connections between the extenslons and body.
7. A device of the class described comprising plow beams, forward extensions carried thereby, dished disks having rib portions upon their outer faces engaging the inner faces of the extensions, bolts secured through said disks and extensions with the 1nner end portions of the bolts within the inner dished portions of the disks, a wheelshaped connecting body surrounding said disks with a central web in normal contact with the inner edges of the disks, the disks and web having central perforations and the extensionshaving perforations in alinement therewith when the device is assembled, a
journaling shaft through said perforations and resilient,- members engaging between the outerfaces of the extensions and the oppo-r site end portions of the shaft. 7
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature. LOUIS M. HOFTRUP,
