To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pails, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pails or containers which are'especially adapted for paint or the like, and is particularly directed to the closure therefor and means of applying the same.'
The objects of this invention are, to provide a pail or can so constructed that a fluid-tight top or closure may be readily applied thereto; to provide a pail having a novel cover and means for holding the same; to provide an improved method of applying a cover to a pail; and, in general, to provide such improvements as will be described more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings illustratin this invention:

It has been found more or less difficult to construct or manufacture pails of comparativelylarge size for paint or the like, with tops which can be readily applied and fas tened by the paint maker after the pails have been filled, so as to make a substantially fluid-tight package for shipping.
In accordance with the present invention, I provide a. pail which may be made in various sizes, but which in actual construction is usually made about twelve inches in diameter and fourteen inches inheight, and is provided with a cover or closure adapted to form a. substantially air-tight package.
As shown in the drawings, this pail comprises a body portion d, which may be provided with one or more annular projections or heads 5, and with av cover protecting bead ll adjacent to the upper end, which bead preferably projects beyond the others. extending projecrolled or :lfo'lnned in any suitable manner. The shoulder 7 forms a support for the cover 9, which consists of a thin metal plate adapted to fit within the rim 8. A gasket or packing ring 10 is provided to be inserted between the cover 9 and the shoulder 7.
The cover 9 is held in position by bending the rim 8 inwardly and down against the same, so as to press the cover tightly against the gasket. In order to do this, the rim preferably corrugated, as indicated in Fig. 2, preparatory to bending it down over the cover. The pails are finished and supplied to the users in this condition. When the pail is filled, the rim 8 is readily bentor pressed inwardly and downwardly so as to press the cover 9 down against the gasket 10, which is compressed as indicated in Fig. 3. This is readily done by any suitable means, but preferably by a special closing machinewhich is provided for closing these pails. The edge of the cover may be depressed as shown at 11, Fig. 3, to receive the crimped rim.
It will be observed that changes may be made in the size and shape without departing from the spirit of this invention, and therefore I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction herein shown and de scribed, except as specified in the following claims:
1. A pail comprising a body portion having an inwardly extending shoulder adja cent to the end, a. cover formed of a single piece and fitting closely within the end, the portion of the body extending above said cover being crimped, whereby it may be bent inwardly to hold the cover in position.
2.111 a. pail, the combination of a body portion having an integrally formed shoulder adjacent to one end thereof, the portion of the body extending beyond the shoulder being crimped, a gasket adapted to engage with said shoulder, and a cover on said gasket of substantially the same diameter as the top oi the pail.
