Be it known that I, HARVEY MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-lllffheels, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in spring wheels, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which embodies novel features of construction whereby the load superposed by a vehicle is resiliently supported and the shocks and jars incident to the movement of the vehicle over uneven roads effectively taken np and cushioned.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a device of this character which defrom metallic springs and is not liable to break or get out of repair, which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction, and which provides means for excluding mud and dirt from the springs.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain combinations, arrangements and associations of the parts, as will more fully appear in the following description, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claim.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fragmentary portion of a spring wheel which is constructed in accordance with the invention, portions being broken away and shown in. sections.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the rim portion of a spring wheel embodying the invention.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all of the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, which illnstrate one possible embodiment of the invention, the numeral 1 designates a fragmentary portion of the felly of a wheel, and 2 one of the spokes A floating ring 3 surrounds the felly 1 in a spaced relation thereto, and a series of coil springs 4 are interposed between the floating ring and the fellyP A band 5 surrounds the felly 1 and fits tightly against the same. the band formed with an integral flange 6 which fits against one of the side faces of the felly, while a corresponding plate 7 is fitted against the opposite side face of the felly and engages the opposite edge of the band. rlhe flange 6 and plate 7 are connected by a series of bolts or rivets 8 which extend transversely through the felly and provide a means for fastening the banc 5 rigidly in position. The outer edge of the plate 7 extends beyond the band as indicated at 7, and the opposite edge of the band 5 formed with a corresponding short flange 8 which projects in the opposite di-V rection from the before mentioned flange 6.
.The coil springs f are radially disposed with respect to the wheel and have the ends thereof engaged by corresponding projections 10 on the band 5 and floating ring 3. These projections serve to position the ends of the springs and to keep the springs in proper place during the operation of the wheel. The two opposite edges of the floating ring 3 are provided with inwardly extending flanges 11 and also with outwardly extending flanges 12, the flanges 11 having an opposed relation to the flange 9 ofthe band and the outer periphery 7L of the plate 'i' and being arranged to engage the said members when the floating ring reaches the limit of its movement in any direction. The ontwardly extending flanges 12 of the floating ring 3 assist in engaging a tire 13, the middle portion of the tire being shown as interlocking with an annular dovetail rib 14: on the exterior of the ring.
