TIMBER-ROLLER-SUPPORTING DEVICE FOR CARS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAooB MANSON MAT- TIX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louise, county of Humphreys, State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Timber-Roller- Supporting Devices for Cars; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to timberrollers commonly used to facilitatethe loading and unloading of lumber and the like from rail- 7 way cars, and more particularly to a device for supporting the timber roller on car door frames. These rollers are usually mounted on a beam adapted to be located adjacent the car door where the lumber is being loaded and unloaded.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and effective means of positioning or supporting the roller .carrying beam so that the roller may be readily adjusted at will, to any desired height with respect to the car door or opening.
Another object is to so construct the supporting device that it may not only be ad justed vertically, but by virtue of its novel construction, the same may be manipulated to adapt itself for use in connection with door frames or jambs of varying thicknesses or sizes.
Another important feature lies in the fact that no tools are needed for making the various adjustments, yet at the same time, when once positioned the device will be firmly and positively locked in place, a simple manipulation of the deviceitself being all that is required to accomplish the desired securing and releasing thereof.
Briefly stated, the invention comprises a main supporting bracket of substantially L shape formation, having an enlarged head and a turned up lower portion in which one end of the roller carrying beam is supported. It is to be understood, that a pair of these devices are to be used, one for each end of the roller beam, as clearly shown in the drawing. The enlarged head portion of the device is provided with suitable holes, in any one of which is secured one end of a hook member, the hooked portion of said member adapted to embrace the rear face of the car door, frame or jamb. Referring to the drawings in detail, the 1nvent1on comprises a bracket 1 which is adapted to support a beam 2 carrying the timber roller 3. Bracket 1, which is of substantially L shape, is provided with a turned up lower end portion 4 forming a support for the end of the beam 2. The bracket 1 is also provided with an enlarged head or upper portion 5, said head bcingslightly rounded or cambered.
Disposed in a preferably horizontal relation in the enlarged head 5 are a series of holes 6 adapted to receive one end of a cooperating member .7. This member 7 is provided with an angular bent portion 8 which is adapted to be inserted in any one of the holes 6 as desired, and the other endof the member 7 is constructed in the form of a pointed hook 9 which is forthe purpose of biting into the car door jamb 10 when the device is in its adjusted position.
By providing bracket 1 with the holes 6 it will be apparent that by merely shifting the angular end 8 of the member 7 from one hole to another the device may be used on car door jambs of varying thicknesses. It will also be noted that the bracket 1, when rotated about any one of the holes 6, with the end 8 of the member 7 as a pivot, the hook 9 being in engagement with the door jamb 10, and the enlarged head 5 .of said bracket 1 cooperating with the door frame, a cam action will be effected upon the downward throw of the lower end of the bracket 1, causing the biting the hook 9 into door jalnb 10 and the consequent looking or securing of the device as a Whole in the de sired position.
To release the support it is only necessary to force the lowerend of the bracket 1 outwardly and upwardly, whereupon said bracket can be disengaged from the hook member 7 which will alsoreleasethe said hook from the door jamb 10.
It is to be understood-that applicant does not have to rely entirely upon the cam action for clamping his device in the various adjusted positions. Obviously the bracket can be placed against the door frame "and the member 7 having its hook portion in engageinent with the rear face of the door jamb and its angular end 8 inserted in theiproper hole in the enlargedportion of the bracket,- according to the thickness or width of the door jamb', a simple downwardpressure exerted on said bracket will cause a binding-action which will be suflicientto lock the device under ordinary conditions in the desired ad'- justed position. The support may be 'released by merely forcing the. bracket upwardly, whereby the member 7 may be dis engaged from the bracket.
This whole operation'can be quickly and easily accomplished without the use of any tools whatsoever, and by the simple means of adjustment the same can beuniversally used in connection with' cars of various types'and sizes. What I claim is: y
