Description
I. G. ZIM. GALLEY SIDE slcK.
APPLICATION FILED ,IAN 28, 1921..

To alllwhom it may concern.' .i
Be it 4known that 'Jnssn G. ZIM, a citi-f zenof the United Statesyresiding atMal#V den,y Lcounty of: Middlesezni Commonwealth of `Massachuset-ts,` have `invented a'fcertain new and useful Improvement in Galley Side-Sticks,l of .which thevffollowinggis `a specilication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to a new and useful improvement in galley side sticks. The object of the invention is to provide a device to be introduced into a galley to extend along the inside faceAof one of the side walls of the galley to hold in place the lines of type which do not eXtendthe full width of the galley so that the ends of the lines will not fall oif.
The invention comprises substantially two parallel bars secured together by a plurality of springs, each spring being made fast to one of the bars and having a slidable connection with the other bar, whereby the bars are normally held apart by the tension of the springs, the springs yielding to pressure on the bars to permit them to be brought closer together.
The invention will be fully understood from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the novel features thereof will be pointed out and clearly defined in the claims at the close of this specication.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a galley in which isemployed a device embodying the invention shown partly in section.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly broken away, of the'locking device shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale on line 3 3 lof Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a galley having two side walls 1 2, and containing a plurality of lines of type 3 which may be either linotype or lines of type. It is noted that the lines of type d0 not extend the full width of the galley, that is they are shown as extending to the wall 1 but fall short of the other side wall 2. The side stick is introduced between the wall 2 and the adjacent ends of the several lines of type 3.
The device comprises the two bars 4 5 parallel with each other and yieldingly connected together by springs, so that they may be moved nearer together or farther apart `Speci'fic'ation of Letters Patent. i

andfalways" bejkeptv inlparajllel relation to;` each `other andf under tension",v y These side` barsfmay be' ,madeA of any suitable material butiprefer'ably of wood.` Onthe inner face of the: bajr lthere` `arevformed elongated 1slots which extend `longitudinaliy)of the ar:` T i H Thin plates or strips 7 preferably o`fmetal" are secured toy the innerfacesfjof the two ledges of the bar 4 on the opposite sides of the slot 6, these strips 7 projecting a short distance over the edges of the slot 6 so as tp form a relatively narrow entrance to the s ot. f
A- plate spring 8 of bow formation is pro` vided for each pair of slots 6 6, said spring being secured midway of its length to the bar 5. In the drawings, the spring is shown as secured tothe bar 5 by means of pins 9.
The spring is formed at each end with a neck portion l0 and a head or lug portion 11, the neck 1,0 being suiiiciently narrow for it to pass loosely through the contracted entrance to the slot 6, and the head or lug 11 is of greater width than the entrance of the slot. The parts can be assembled by putting y swinging the strip back into place alongside 1 of the slot. The strip is then fastened to the bar by pins. After the parts are assembled and fastened together the head 11 will not pull out of the slot.
The spring is secured to the side bar 5 not only, midway of the length ofthe spring but at a point midway between the two slots 6 6 in the bar 4. The ears 11 are then bent down substantially at rightangles to the body of the spring, as shown in Fig. 1.
It will be obvious that ifthe side bar 5 is pressed toward the side bar 4f the springs 8 will be straightened out and the elongated slot 6 will allow for the two opposite lugs 11 l1 spreading apart from each other as the spring is elongated by the straightening thereof.
It will thus be seen that if the device is inserted in the galley with the side bar 4 against the side of the galley and the side bar 5 against the ends of the lines of type, the normal tension of the springs 8` will hold the Side bar 5 with yielding pressure against 1 tions, and guard members ,secured tou-fthe y *i the ends of the lines of type and hold them firmly in position,V pressing the opposite ends of the lines of type against the `Vsiderl of the galley by anelastie pressure. j If itis desired to have the lines of type a little longernthe sidebar 5 will" yield fon suoli purpose."
