Be it known that l, EDWARD F. CHAFFEE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State f New York, have invented a certain new and useful vSpring-Balance for Window-Sashes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to spring balanced windows particularly applicable to railway cars, and has for its object a particularly simple, efcient, easily-,accessible and durable construction of the means tending to move or raise the window sash in one direction; and the invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and. constructions hereinafter setforth and claimed.

ln describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.

This window construction comprises, generally, a frame, a sash movable in the frame and an extension spring connected to the sash to move the same inl one direction as' vsprings may 1tensed.

Preferably, the springs are arranged along the side edges of the sash.

l designates the frame formed with the usual guideways 2 in which the window moves vertically.v r

3 is a stop forming one of the sidesof each guideway 2.

4 is the sash having its Amargins movable in the guides 2, and 5 are tension springs extending along each margin of the window and connected at like ends to the sash and at their other ends to the frame.

Usually a portion of the frame, as each stop 3, is formed with a lengthwise recess therein and the spring 5 is arranged in the recess each 'stop and connected at its Specification of Letters Patent.

Each stop 3 is, in this form of my invention, shown as formed up from a strip of sheet metal bent to provide a lengthwise channel or recess 6 and an external lengthwise channel 7 the open side of the channel 7 facing outwardly in the direction of the general plane of the sash and being closed by the major part of the frame, and the channel 7 facing inwardly ina direction parallel to the general plane of the sash, and serving as a curtain guide. ylhe portion of the strip confining the recess 6 is rounding.

Each spring 5 is here shown as connected at its lower end to an angular pin 8 extending from the faceof the sash 4c into the recess of the stop through the open side 9, and at its upper end to a sash tightener 10 including a lever pivoted at 1l 'between its ends to a suitable projection as an ear 12 on the window stops 3, the lever carrying at one end a roller 13'which bears against thewindow sash, and being connected at its other end at It to the upper end of the spring 5. Although the spring may, if desired, be connected at its upper end directly to the frame. rThe stops 3 are'detachably held in position in any suitable manner as by screws.

rlhe sash is provided with the usual catches 21 which are shown as coacting with the window stops as the rounding part of the stop 3, or ra'clrs on the stops, and if desired the springs may be connected to movable parts of the catches 21 to exert force thereon in such direction as to hold the latches in their locked position. lin operation, when the catches 21 are operated, the springs tend to raise the sash.

IThis construction is particularly advantageous, in that the springs are readily accessible upon removal of the stops, as the springs are located in the stops in the construction shown in Figs. l, 2, 3, 4.

What il claim is:

l. ln a window construction, the combinaof the sash, and connected at one end to the sash, and at its other end to the sash tight- 'i0 ener, substantially -as and for the purpose described.
