I MAXIMILIAN CHARLES SCHWEINERT, or wnsr'noiaonnn, nnwuEnsEY.
s'rorrnn FOR WATER-BOTTLES on THE LIKE.
T 0 all to 710m it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAXIMILIAN Crmnnns SoHwEINERT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in l/Vest Hoboken, in
the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and 'useful Improvements in Stoppers for Water Bottles or the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates tostoppers for water bottles or the like, and aims to provide certain improvements therein.
The invention is particularly directed to that type of water bottle stopper in which an enlarged neck member is provided, usually of oval form, which is fastened within The invention provides in this type of stopper a construction in which the stopper proper is always maintained in its screw t-hreaded socket piece, means being provided whereby when the stopper is unscrewed to a certain extent the passages through the structure are open, and when it is screwed; down such passages are closed. Theinvention includes certain other features of constructionwhich will be hereinafter more fully described.
According to the drawings -which illustrate several forms of the invention,-
Figure l is a central vertical section of the neck, the stopper being shown in elevatien.
Fig. 2 is a similar section at right angles to thatof Fig. 1.
F ig.- 3 is a similar section to Fig. 1, show ing a slightly modified construction.
Fig. 4-is a plan of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, let A indicate the neck member which is shown of ova-l form, as best seen in Fig. 4. In the construction illustrated the neck member is formed of a single piece of sheet metal havinga bottom wall a and side wall Z) which are usually concave to provide a better connectionwith the rubber neck of the water bottle.' The neck member A is, preferably formed with-a centrally disposed opening 0 around the margin of which is fixed thesocket member B. The parts may bejoined in any convenient manner, "preferably by forming an internal flanged on the socket member over which isturned a flange e Specification of Letters Patent. Pat t July 5,1 Application-filed November 12,1915. Serial No. 61,037;
formed on the-neck member. The socket B is preferably constructed of sheet metal formed with internal and externalthreads, the former of which is designed to receive the stopper C. v 7
According. to the present'invention I proylde a construction in which the stopper is retained in placein the socket'member during all conditions of use. To this-end Inform an aperture or-series of apertures f in the socket member immediately above the flange e, such apertures leading to the space 9 formed. by the neck member A. When the stopper isscrewed to its upper position, as indicated in Fig. 1, the apertures or ports 7 a-re'open and permit water to flow into and out of the bottle for filling and discharging purposes. Whenthe stopper is screwed to its lower position, its packing h is pressed against the flange c (or other seat) and entirely closes access through the apertures f.
In the preferred construction as thus described the neck member A constitutes a re ceptacle into which the water is poured, thus increasing the effective 'capacityof the funnel D of the water bottle, and forming a filling chamber into which the -water is poured in filling the bottle. I hence prefer that the neck member- A be arranged within the water bottle neck with its open end uppermost, since its additional capacity when so arranged enlarges'the effective capacity of the water bottle funnel. f
Inthe' construction shown it is not necessary'to remove the stopper from the socket member B; all that is requisite is that the stopper be unscrewed to a sufficient extent to uncover the apertures'or ports 7. I prefer, however, to provide some means by which the stopper is limited in its upward motion so that by carelessness or otherwise it will not be wholly unscrewed and removed from the bottle. 5 One construction for accomplishing this result is indicated in Fig. 1, whereln I provide a screw-threaded collar j having a flange 7a which fits over a complementary flange Z' formed'on the water bottle stopper. When the collar is screwed down over the exterior of the socket member it constitutes an effective stop which prevents the complete removal of the stopper. In order to simplify the assembly of the a water parts, I prefer to construct the collar j with a recess or recesses m m (I-ig. 4.) in its flange is, so that the collar may be easily slipped over the handle n of the stopper.
If desired, however, the socket member may be permanently connected to the stopper by means, such as shown in Fig. 3, wherein the screw-threaded collar j is omitted and a flange 0 is formed at the top of the socket member 13.
IVhile I have shown and described several forms of the invention, it will be understood that I do not wish to be limited thereto, since various changes may be made therein Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is 1. In adevice of the character described, an enlarged neck member adapted to be secured within the neck of a water-bottle or the like having fixed thereto a reduced socket member, a stopper screwing in said socket member, a seat at the lower part of said socket member, and apertures above said seat, said apertures constituting passages to the water bottle when the stopper is in its upper position.
