T 0 all whom it concern I Be it known that I, FRANK O. HOAGLAND,
a citizen of the United States, and resident of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have .invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Surface-Plates, ofwhich the following is a specification.
ing, is to provide a surface plate wherein the greatest amount of strength and rigidity may be obtained by the use of a minimum amount of material, to Construct the same so that it may be produced cheaper than the old form of surface plate and stronger in proportion to its weight; to provide a novel form of construction wherein the material is shaped and distributed in a manner to prevent the plate from warping or otherwise getting out of shape and so as to insure a perfectly true and rigid operating surface.
With these and other objects in view the invention resides and consists in the construction and novel combination and ar-' rangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departure from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Similar characters of reference denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and upon which,
Figure 1 shows a central vertical 'longi 'tudinal section of the form of surface plate shown in Fig. 2. t v
Fig. 2is a bottom view of the plate shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of'a square plate constructed inaccordance with the features of my invention.

SURFACE- PLATE. Specification of Letters Patent.

P t nted f Fig. 6 is a simila'r sectional view ta ken'on hne 6 .of F i j 'fii e' 1 ates for the'above purpose as ice.
July 5,1921;
now commonly used include a straight up-.
per ,portion having, a flat top" surface, and
are reinforcedupon their lunder'side' with ribs that extend both cross-wise and longitu dinally. This fo-rni of rib reinforcement now has to be made heavy in order to give the required strength to the plates, but i which makes the plates bulky to handle and expens ve to manufacture.
As will be noted, my present invention is designed so as to preferably be made of one piece of metal, and formedby casting the same in a suitable mold with the use of cores of the required size properly placed so that a complete plate can be made with one pouring of metal and so as to require but a slight amount of work to finish the surface.
In the drawing, 10 represents the straight upperportion of the plate, having a top operating surface 11, which is reinforced and strengthened wholly upon the underside by suitable bridges and intermediate support-V ing posts, all of which may be made comparatively light and are specially arranged and shaped to give to the completedarticle the required amount of rigidity. The legs 12 upon which the plate is supported are also formed integral with the body of the plate and their bottom ends are finished so as to be spaced equal distances from the operating surface of the plate.
The bridging 13 is in curved formation,
and may include a single wall forming a curved bowl-like bridge, producing a single chamber in which are positioned a series of vertical posts 14 that extend from the inner wall of the bridging up to the underside of the top portion of the plate, in away to strengthen the same, or it may include a series of such curved reinforcing bowllike walls which intersect'one with the other to form a series of compartments 15 and 16 that are also provided with posts to support and strengthen the structure. Upon the underside of the corners of the plate includ:
ing the bowls are formed radially disposed ribs 18 as shown, which extend out under the corners of the plate to properly support the same. The several compartments or p ces been??? t e blidg ngs are provided with a series of core holes 17 whereby the cores for the casting maybe removed and upon the ends of the plate are formed rein forced holes19 for the attachment of handles, not shown.
Having thus descrlbed my invention, What 7 I claim and. desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
"With the top body portion and inclosing' pockets therewith, and posts in the pockets connecting the bridging to the body porition.
. ,2. Amen surface plate including a top body portion having an operating surface,
a bridgingconcave-convex portion formed on the underside thereof, and Web portions intersecting bridging concave-convex portions formed on theunderside thereof, and additional means intermediate of the; top and bridging for supporting the plate,'and openings in the bridgingl w Signed at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, this 27th dayof Qctober, A. 11 1919,
