STEAM-GENERATOR.
- Application filed November 7, 1918, Serial No. 261,731.
2 '0 all whom it'may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN H. LEISTER, a citizenof the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in SteamGenerators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in steam generators of the so-called flash type, wherein parallel convolute walls opparallel alternating water and heat passages.
The primary object of my invention is to provide an improved and simplified construction for steam generators whereby greater strength and efliciency may be obtained.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a multi-channeled steam generator constructed in such amanner that the numerous parts may be rigidly and securely welded together during formation whereby leakage of joints may be prevented.
-It is'also an object to provide a steam generator of-simple and improved construction'lhaving amaximum heating area whereby efiiciency may be obtained.
A still further object of the present invention'is to provide a new and improved steam generator formed of parallel convolute walls coiled to form convolute parallel passages for conveyin heat and water in such a man-- ner that a thin film of water will be exposed to the heat.
I accomplish these several objects by means of the device disclosed in the drawing forming a part of the present specification wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout the said specification and drawings, and in which Figure 1 is a horizontal transverse sectional view of my improved generator;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, in the direction indicated;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the parallel walls in an extended or straightened position; and
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of Fig. 3 with the near wall removed.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 is used to designate a sheet of metal bent upon itself to form parallel walls 1 coiled upon a central member 2, having a central passage or bore 3 for the passage of heat, to

the outer-end thereof.
The water passage 4 is also provided with a'serles of intercalated partitions 11, certain provided with vertically disposed extensions 12 to form a continuous convolute channelhavingpockets to form traps whereby the water in the upper portions of said channel will be trapped in the same manner and for the purpose well the art.
"The, heat passage 6 is provided with a series of apertured separators 14 whereby the spaced relation of the Walls 1 to form said These separators 14c in conjunction with the partitionll, also serve as binders to resist the lateral pressure and strain upon the walls 1 in the water passages.
A suitable combustion chamber 16 is arranged under the entire structure, said chamber 16 being connected with a fuel supply chamber 17 by means of suitable burner aperture 18.
In operation the water is admitted through the intake 7 to the uppermost portion of the water passage 4 and flows in a thin film as provided by the space between the walls 1 through the channel formed by the partitions 11 from the inner to the outer end of the convolute passage 1 at which point it flows into the next lower channel and back to the inner end of the convolute passage 1 where it encounters the first trap or extension 12 of that partition 11, and so on, back Renewed February 19, 1920. in its downward passage until it is transformed into Steamat the bottom of the generator where the'greatest amountot heat exists so that said water is transformed into a water passages 6 and 4 respectively, the greatest possible heating area has been obtainedwith a comparatively simple and .efii- -cient construction and arrangement.
Having thus described my'invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentris-' 7 1 e V "1.- A steam generator comprising parallel convolute walls arranged to provide alter Qnate parallel water-and heat passages means within the convolute water passage for providing continuous alternating channelsfrom one end of said passage to the other; and
means for trapping water at one endofsaid channel- 2. A steam generator comprising parallel 'convolute walls' arranged to provide alternate parallel water and heat passages; means within the convolute waterpassage for pro- .viding continuous alternatingchannels from be obtained; and apertured convolute separators' arranged within the heat passage,
lu'Astea-m generator comprising parallel convolute walls coiled to form alternatel 1 parallel water and heat passages having an intakeat the inner end and a discharge at the outer end of the water passage; intercalated jcon-volute partitions arranged within the water passage and bent upwardly adjacent the outer endnof the water passage to 7 form continuous alternating channels and water traps whereby a forced circulation of water within'saidwater passage may be ob tained; and apertured convolute separators arianged within the heat passage.
steam generator" comprising parallel I walls arranged to provide alternate, continuous clrcultouswater and heatcirculating within. the .water passage for providing cona trap incertain of said passages and'spaced' separators arranged within the heat passage -intermediate the ends-thereofil;
