Description
L. W. HUGHES.
PACKING CASE.
APPLICATION man FEB. 8. i921.
Patented July 5, 1921.
YY'LIONEL wonsLEY HUGHES, on LoNnoN, ENGLAND.
PACKING-CASE. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
, Application filed February 8, 1921. Serial No. 443,428.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LIONEL VVORSLEY HUGHES, a subject of the King of England, residing at Raymond House, 32 Theobalds road, London, VJ. C. 1, England, (whose post-office address is Raymond House, 32 Theobalds road, London, W. C. 1, England,) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in or modification of the means for fastening packing cases described in the specification of my United States Patent N 0. 1,345,856 and has for its object to simplify the construction.
According to my aforesaid United States Patent No. 1,345,856 the hinged fastening strips each terminate in an apertured disk or plate which lap over a bolt at the center of the lid of the case. By such overlapping it follows that the strips make an inconvenient-1y thick joint at the center of the lid and they could only be lifted, when opening the case, in a predetermined sequence.
My present improvement is designed to obviate both these disadvantages.
In the accompanying draw1ngs:
Figure l is a perspective view of a packing case with fastenings according to my present invention;
Fig. 2 is a partial section to an enlarged scale taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1 with one of the fastening strips removed; and
Fig. 3 is a of Fig. 1.
In these drawings A is the packing case, D the strengthening bands and D the fastening strips hinged thereto as before. Each fastening strip D terminates in a plate D as before which is now made with tapered sides D cut away toward the apex as shown part plan view, also enlarged,
at D in Fig. 3 so that when all are closed; down they leave an aperture D in the center through' which passes the bolt E. The tapered plates may be stepped inward as shown so as to fit into a recess C in the lid.
The bolt passes through a hole in the lid and is formed on, secured to or passed through a plate E, secured on the under side of the lid by screws or the like in the ordinary manner.
The parts are secured together in the closed position by a screw cap F of such size as to overlap the free ends of the tapered plates. To prevent the loss of the screw cap, a chain F is secured to the cap and its free end is passed through a small hole in the lid and secured to or on the plate E or to 01218 of the screws securing said plate to the li Havin fully I claim and Patent is l. A packing case comprising a body and a lid, a metallic strengthening band secured to the said body, fastening strips hinged to the upper ends of said band, tapered plates on the ends of said strips adapted when closed down on the lid to leave a space between them, a threaded rod on the lid coinciding in position with the space left between the tapered plates, and a cap screwed described my invention, what desire to secure by Letters on the threaded rod and overlapping the free ends of the tapered plates and provided with means for securing it against accidental loss.
2. A packing case comprising a body and a lid, metallic strengthening bands secured to the bottom and sides and bottom and ends of said body, fastening strips hinged to the upper ends of said bands, tapered plates on the ends of said strips adapted when closed down-on the lid to leave a space between them, a threaded rod on the lid coinciding in position with the space left between the tapered plates, and a cap screwed on the threaded rod and overlapping the free ends of the tapered plates and provided with 7 means for securing it against accidental loss.
8. A packing case comprising a body and a lid, metallic strengthened bands secured to the bottom and sides and bottom and ends of said body, fastening strips hinged to the upper ends of said bands, tapered plates on the ends of the strips adapted when closed down on the lid to leave a space between them, said plates being stepped inward to fit into a recess in the lid, a threaded rod mounted in the recess in the lid coinciding in position with the space left between the tapered plates, and a cap screwed on the threaded rod and overlapping the free ends of the tapered plates and provided with means for securing it against accidental loss.
4. A packing case comprising a body and a lid, metallic strengthening bands secured to the bottom and sides and bottom and ends of said body, fastening strips hinged to the upper ends of said bands, tapered plates on Patented July 5, 1921.

the ends of the strips adapted when closed ends of the tapered plates and provided with 10" down on the lid to leave a space between means for securingit against accidental loss.
them, said plates being stepped inward to fit into a recess in the lid, a'threaded rod mounted in the recess in the lid and secured to a plate on the inner side of the lid, said rod coinciding in position with the space left between the tapered plates, and a cap screwed on the threaded rod and overlapping the free y nesses this 25th day of January, 1921.
