Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HEINRICH EDWARD WAGNER, OF COPITZ-NEAR-DRESDEN, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO J. F. HUGO MATTULLATH, OF PITTSBURG, PA.
' IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,302, dated April 29, 1873; application filed December 26, 1872.
invention may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim and desire to secure by Iietters Patentthat is to say:
My invention has for its object so to prepare paper that it is rendered more or less transparent, and that any writing or drawing thereon with ink, color, pencil, or crayon can be readily and completely removed therefrom by washing without in any way impairing the paper. The object of making the paper translucent is that when used in schools the scholars can trace the copy, and thus become proficient in the formation of letters without the explanations usually necessary, and it may also be used in any place where tracings may be required, as by laying the paper over the object to be copied it can be plainly seen.
For this purpose I saturate the paper, by preference writing-paper, with benzine, and I then immediately coat the paper with a suitable fluid siccative or rapidly-dryin g varnish before the benzine can evaporate from the paper. Such siccative is by preference applied by immersing the paper in a bath thereof, or it may be applied with a brush or sponge. When the siccative coating is dry the paper is ready for use. Instead of benzine, turpentine or analogous substances may be used for saturating the paper 5 but I prefer to use benzine, as above described.
The varnish I prefer to use for this purpose is composed of the following ingredients, in the proportions stated: Boiled bleached linseed-oil, twenty pounds; lead shavings, one,
pound oxide of zinc, five pounds Venetian turpentine, a half pound. Mix, and boil eight hours. After cooling, strain, and add white gum copal, five pounds, and gum sandarac, a half pound.
The paper so prepared is more or less transparent, and may be used for writing or drawing purposes, its transparency affording great facility for tracing thereon writings or drawings from original documents or drawings;
and as the writing or drawing, whether in ordinary or copying ink, India ink, color, pencil, or crayon, can be readily and completely removed by Washing, and other writing or drawing be made on the paper, it will be seen that the prepared paper is applicable to a number of purposes for which ordinary paper cannot be employed. By writingupon such prepared paper with copying-ink, one or more press-copies may be readily taken therefrom by simply laying moistened copying-paper thereon, and pressing upon the same by hand.
The paper which I employ for the above purpose may either be white, in which case it will be transparent when prepared, as above described, or it may be of any color, in which case it will be more or less opaque. The paper may also be of any thickness; and when thick paper is employed it may be conveniently used as writingtablets.
I am aware that modes of making silicated papers have been described, which are claimed to give a surface from which ink can be washed without injury to the paper but all such silicated papers are. so far as I am aware of them, distinguishable from mine in the fact that they are opaque, while those made by my process are translucent 5 and I hereby limit my claim accordingly.
Having thus described the nature of my invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, what I claim is-- As a new article of manufacture, translucent paper having a surface suitable for receiving a record by means of ink or other coloring matter, and a body and face such that the record so made may be removed by ordinary washing without impairing the paper for receiving a new record, when prepared substantially in the manner described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses this 18th day of November,
H. E. WAGNER. Witnesses:
'JNo. P. M. MILLARD,
H. MATTULLATH.
