Be it known that I, JAMES l/I. McKee, citizen of the United States, residing at New Bloomfield, in the county of Perry and State oit' Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to locks, and one ot the objects of the invention is to provide a lock which cannot be easily picked and which can not be unlocked by a master key.
Another object of the invention is to so design the operative parts of the lock, that by variation inthe location or size of these parts, a wide number of different combinations may be effected in which no two keys will be alike or operate the same lock.
Another object of the invention is in the application of this lock to safeguard automobiles against theft, by Ylocking the steering wheel, spark and gas levers against unauthorized movement; also for locking tires, robes and other articles in the automobile.
Another application of my invention is tor locking the steering post against turning, thus preventing theft of a machine by towing.
Vith these general objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and combination of parts as hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that it may be fully understood, reference is to be had to the ac companying drawing in which- Figure l is a perspective view oi the lock as constructed for locking the steering wheel spark and gas llevers against movement or for locking articles in the machine, such as robes;

different adjusted positions and to be held against movement in one direction by the said catches. Connected to the endl ot the ratchet bars and to the bottom ot the casing to provide a loop, are the chains l0.
The locking member fl is provided with a reciprocating U shaped pin ll which is normally forced forward by the leaf spring l2.
The end 13 of the pin il when in forward y position, engages an aperture la in the bolt 5, while the other end l5 projects a short distance into the keyhole 16. For resiliently holding the sliding bolt 5 in locked position, a spring 17 is provided. .The under side of the sliding bolt 5 is provided with rack teeth 1S which engage with the pinion shaped body i9 of the key 20. The said key is provided with an arbor 2l which lits the bearing in the bottom of the keyhole 23. 0n the end of the pinion 19 is a pin '24- which when the key is inserted in the keyhole alines with and abuts the projecting end 15 of the piu ll. As the key is pressed forward the nin li is forced rearwardly against the pressure of the spring l2 and the end lof the said pin is withdrawn from thc aperture la. its the key is turned, the cooperation of the rack 1S with the pinion li9 will reciprocate the locking bolt 5. In order that the key shall not move forward when inserted, so far Aas to cause the pin 2i to enter the aperture in which the end l5 of the pin il slides, e limiting stop 25 is provided in the bottom of the keyhole. For causing the key to enterI the slot in a predetermined position, I provide a spline 26 inthe keyhole. and cooperating with a groove 27 in the key. To prevent rotation of the bolt 5, the said bolt is provided with a slot 28 with which thc slightly projecting end 13 of the locking pin cooperates when in retracted position.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The cover 2 of the receptacle is in locked position. If it is desired to lock the spark and gas levers of an automobile7 the chain is looped around them in such a manner as to prevent movement thereof, and the rack bars 9 are then inserted in the slot 7 and pushed forward until the loops of the chain are taut. The cooperation ot the spring 8 and the rack bars prevent withdrawal of the latter. IVhen it is desired to unlock the device, the key is inserted in the keyhole properly by the cooperation of the spline 26 and groove 27. As the key is.

and 10 may be used. The advantages of this type of the chain is that a smaller loop can be made as the chain itself can be drawn through the grooves 7 and locked in position.
From theabove description it will be apn parent that in the application of my invention as illustrated, the device as shown is essentially a lock within a lock. It is intended however that the inner locking member shall be of general application. One of the other uses to which it may be put is in connection with locking the steering gear of an automobile. In that case the body of the lock would be placed on the steering casing and the bolt would enter the aperture in the steering post, thus preventing relative rotation ot these two parts. Y
From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced a. device of the character described, which possesses all the features enumerated as desirable, and Vwhile I have illustrated and described the preferred -orm of the invention, it will be understoodv that I .reserve the right to all changes properly falling within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Therefore what I claim as new and Adesire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A lock comprising a bolt and a pluralarmed locking pin, one arm of the said pin cooperating with the said bolt to lock it against movement, a key adapted to cooperate with the other arm to release the first named arm from engagement with the bolt and cooperating means on the key and bolt for moving the latter when the key is turned.
2. A chain lock comprising a casing member, a cover member hinged thereto, oneV of the said members being slotted, flexible securing means attached. at one end to one of the said members and at the other end provided with means for engaging the slotted member, and means orlocking the cover Y member to the casing member to lock the flexible securing means in position.
8. A lock comprising a bolt and a U shaped locking pin, one arm ofV the said pin engaging with the bolt to lock it against movement, a key adapted to cooperate with the .other armto release the first Vnamed arm from engagement with the bolt and co? operating means on the key and bolt for moving the latter when the key is turned.
4. A lock comprising a bolt and a U shaped ylocking pin, one arm of the said pin engaging with the bolt to lock it against movement, the other arm projecting into the keyhole and oit center thereof,` a key adapted to cooperate with thelast'named arm to release the first named arm from engagement with the bolt and cooperating means on the key and bolt for moving the latter when the key is turned.
5. A lock comprising a bolt and a AU shaped locking pin, one arm of the said pin engaging with the bolt to lock it 'against movement, the other arm projecting into the keyhole, a key adapted to cooperate with the last named arm to release the tirstrnamed arm from engagement with the bolt as the key isinserted in the lock, and ratchetteeth on the bolt cooperating with pinion teeth on the key for turning the said bolt.
6. A lock comprising a zbolt and a U shaped locking pin, one armor the said pin engaging with the bolt to lock it against movement, the other arm projecting into the keyhole, a key adaptedV to cooperate with the last named arm to release the first named arm from engagement with the boltV as the key is inserted in the lock, and ratchet teeth on the bolt 'cooperating with pinion teeth on the key -for turning the saidbolt, anda pin in the keyhole slot engaging others of the pinion teeth for positioning the key as it is inserted in the lock. v
