MATTRESS BEATING AND SHAPING MACHINE.

Be it known that `WALTER ROBERT Knorr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Francisco, county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Mattress Beating and Shaping Machine, of which the following` is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in mattress beating and shaping machines.
It will be understood by those skilled in the art that as the mattress is being filled it is necessary to beat the filling into shape in order to bring it to the shape required, and this work is now done by men striking the mattress repeatedly with short clubs.` The main object of the present invention is to accomplish by power what is now done by hand. l
Another object is to provide power driven beaters capable of beating and forming a mattress in process of filling faster than can be done by hand.
Another object is to provide means for changing the stroke of the beaters so as to vary the force of the blow on the mattress.
Another object is the provision of means for raising or lowering the beating mechanism in relation to the mattress.
A further object is to provide means for turning and sliding the mattress under the beaters.
A further object is to construct a simple and substantial beating and shaping mechanism, and one that will be comparatively inexpensive to build.

The same reference numeral is applied to the same portion throughout the several views.
The numerals (1) to (4)I inclusive indicate the corner posts of the frame, which are joinedA at the top by the horizontal beams Specification of Letters Patent.

(5) to (8) inclusive, and at the bottom by the beams (9 to (12)k inclusive. Supported on the beams (10) and (11) are beams (13) and (14) adapted to carry tracks (15) and (16). In this instance the tracks are grooved to receive shoes (17) attached to a slidable frame (18) which is adapted to be moved on the tracks lin either direction by means of the ropes (19), (20), drums (22) and (23), shaft (24), bearings (25) and (26) and handle (27).
' vSupported on the frame (18) is a turntable (28) centered on the pin (29), and provided with suitable ball bearings as at (30). Slidably mounted on vertical posts (31) and (32) is a frame (33). Fixed to the frame by suitable brackets (34) and (35) is a tube (86) onwhich are loosely mounted the beaters (37) and (38). The beaters consist of a pivot bracket (39) and a stick (40) held in place by means of U- bolts (41). A crank shaft (42) is mounted in bearings (43) and (44) above the beaters so that its cranks will engage lifting bars (47) and striking bars (48), the cranks being provided with rollers (49) to reduce friction when in sliding contact with the bars (47) and (48). The bars (47) and (48) are pivotally mounted on the bracket (39) and the movement of the bar (47) on its pivot is controlled by means of a yoke in which is pivoted a threaded nut (51) fitting the thread. on the rod (52) which is mounted in a bearing and held from end movement by the collar (54) and gear both of which are pinned to the rod (52). Slidable in the tube (36) is a rod (56) which has a suitable number of teeth or annular grooves (57) adapted to act as a toothed rack to mesh with the gear (55). Means for sliding the rod (57) consists of a lever (58) pivoted at (59) and connected to the rod (57) by a lever (60) by means of pivots (61) and (62). The tube (36) is cut away at (63)k to allow clearance for the gear (55). The frame is provided with guides (64) and is adapted to slide up or down on the posts (31) and (32), and is controlled by a bell crank lever (65) pivoted as at (66) ,on a bracket (67) which has a quadrant (68) with notches to hold the lever (65). Bell cranks (69) and (70) are pivoted to brackets (71) and (72) which are bolted to the frame. Rods (73) and (74) connect the frame (33) with the bell cranks, and the Patented Julie 2S, 1921.
bell cranks are connected to the lever by links and (76). 0n Vthe opposite side isa duplicate beating mechanism adapted to slide up and down on the posts (31) and (32) and a duplicate arrangement of bell cranks and levers is operated by the lever (65) through the shaft (66) which extends across the frame. On the bar (47) lconcentric with its pivot are gear teeth (77) which are adapted to mesh with pinion teeth (77 concentric with the pivot of the bar (48). The crank shaft (42) through the bevel gears (78) and (79), the shaft (80), the gears (81) and (82), the shaft. (83) andthe drive pulley (84) may be driven by any suitable source of power. rlhe shaft (80) has a bearing (85) attached to the frame and a bearing (86) fixed to the cross bar (87), and the shaft (88) has bearings (88) and (89) fixed to the cross bar (87).
In operation the mattress in process of filling is placed on the turntable (28), the frame adjusted to the desired height by means ofthe lever (65), and power' applied to the pulley (84) which turns the shaft (88) with the gears (82), thus driv- 'ing the gears (8l) with the shaft (80) which through the gears (7 9) and (78) drive the crankshaft in the direction of the arrow a. As the crank revolves the roller (49) pushes back on the bar (47) and raises the beater to its'extreme height, land as the crank continues to revolve the roller engages the recess in the bar (48) and throws the beater down with a quick blow.
It will be noted that the lifting nievement is comparatively slow owing to the lifting force of the crank being' exerted en the long lever, while the downward blow is the result of the force of the crank acting on a short lever. lf shorter strokes are wanted the lever is moved to slide the rod (57) which turns the gears with the screw rod (52) and causes the nut (51) to travel in the direction of the arrow 7'/ and the bar (47) to move in the direction of 'the arrow c. This' moves the gear teeth (77) which acts on the pinion teeth 77 to throw the bar (48) in the direction of the arrow (Z.
lt will be seen that by this action the bars (47) and (48) are thrown out of the path of the crank more or less depending on how much they are moved. T he turntable (28) can be turned as desired and moved on the tracks (l5) and 16) by means of the crank (27) which turns the drums (22) and and causes one drum' to wind up one rope and unwind the other, direction being given tol the lropes by the 'pulleys (19') and (20). The gear (79) is provided with a key adapted to slide inY the keyway (79) in the shaft (80).
My claims are as follows, but I am aware that various modifications may be made in the construction as shown in the drawings and above described form within the scope of my invention.
l claim:
L A machine of the class described comprising a frame, a rotatable and slidable platform in said frame adapted to receive a mattress, vibratory beaters above said platform adapted to beat said mattress in the process of filling thereof, and means for driving said vibratory beaters.
2. A machine of the class described comprising a frame, a slidableplatform in said frame adapted to receive a mattress, means for sliding said frame and power driven means for beating said mattress mounted above said platform.
3. A machine of the class described comprising a frame, a rotatable-and slidable platform in said frame adapted to receive a mattress in the process of filling, hinged beaters adjustably mounted in said frame above said platform, and means for actuating said beaters. j i
4. A machine of the class described comprising a frame, a movable platform in said frame adapted to receive a 'mattress in process of filling and forming, beaters adapted to strike said mattress, and means for adjusting the stroke of said beaters.
5. A machine of the class described comprising a frame, an adjustable platform in said fra-me adapted to receive a mattress in the process of filling and forming, beaters mounted in said frame and adapted to strike said mattress, means for driving said beaters, and means for adjusting the stroke of said beaters. f
6. A mattress beating and shaping machine comprising a frame, an adjustable platform in said frame adapted to receive a. mattress in process of filling and'forming, power driven beaters mounted in said frame and adapted to strike said mattress, and

A mattress beating and shaping machine comprising a frame, an adjustable platform in said frame adapted to receive a mattress in process of filling and forming, a vertical slidable frame in said frame., a crank shaft mounted in said vertical frame, beaters pivoted below and back of said crank shaft, bars extending upwardly from said beaters and adapted to be acted on by the cranks of said crank shaft to raise said beaters and strike the mattress therewith, and means for adjusting said bars. A mattress beating and shaping machine comprising a frame, an adjustable platform in said frame adapted to receive a mattress in the process of filling and forming, a vertical slidable frame in Vsaid frame, a crank shaft with cranks thereon mounted in said vertical frame, beaters pivoted below i and back of said crank shaft, a bar pivoted on eaeli of said beaters and adapted to be engaged by one or' said cranks to raise one of' said beaters, and a short bar pivoted forward of said bar adapted to be engaged by said crank to throw said beater down on said mattress, and means for adj usting said bars in relation to said crank.
