JNVENTOR. WITNESS:
' JZnim u/EFaans A TTORNEYS UNITED STATES ANDREW B. FOANS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WHEEL TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 28, 1921.
Application filed September 21, 1920. Serial No. 411,799.
To (H1071 0m it may concern Be it known that I, ANDREW B. FOANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented new and useful improvements in Wheel Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates essentially to a toy in which a driving wheel rolling along the ground rocks a platform to animate a figure suspended above the platform.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple inexpensive toy for the amusement of children which is fundamentally designed to imitate a dancing figure or a galloping animal arranged above the platform when the device is wheeled along the ground.
The novel combinations of the invention are more fully described in the following specification and claims, reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a toy embodying this invention.
Fig. 2 is a section taken along the line 2-2 of the same.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 1.
Fig. l is a perspective view of the platform.
Fig. an elevation of a modification.
In the drawing the numeral 6 designates a driving or traction wheel having a series of pins 7 projecting from each side of the wheel. The wheel is rotatively mounted on an axle 8 extending beyond the sides of the wheel. On the axle is fixed a yoke 9 provided with lateral branches 10 made to straddle the wheel. the ends of the branches being secured to a bar or handle 11 suitable for drawing the vehicle. The yoke is preferably coiled about the axle on each side of the wheel, so as to prevent it from laterally shifting or being displaced.
Above the wheel is arranged a platform 12 having depending side members 13 suitably curved to form cams for coaction with the pins of the driving wheel. The platform is rockiugly mounted on a wire frame, including a pair of wire rods 14: extending upwardly from the axle through slots 15 formed in the platform.
To the upper ends of the rods is fastened a transverse strip 16, see Fig. 2, having secured to it a body section 17 of the card board figure with jointed legs 18 in contact with the platform.
lVhen the wheel is propelled along the ground it will oscillate the platform, and
the legs of the manikin will hop up and down thus imitating a dancing toy on the platform. It will. be readily understood, that the pins by gliding along the cams of the depending members 13, tilt the platform as indicated in 1 in dotted lines, but when the pin is out of contact with the cams, the rear portion of the platform gravitates downward to its normal position on the periphery of the wheel as shown in Fig. 5, the animal is swingingly mounted on the upper portion of the rods 14: so that when the traction wheel is drawn along the ground it operates the platform interinittingly to simulate a horse galloping. i
I claim:
1. A toy comprising a wheel, a frame supported on the wheel, a figure suspended from the frame, and a platform loosely connected to-the frame operated by the wheel to actuate the figure.
A toy comprising an axle, a wheel mounted on the axle, a frame carried by the axle, a figure suspended from the frame, and a platform loosely connected to the frame rocked by the wheel to actuate the figure.
A toy comprising an axle, a wheel having pins mounted on the axle, a wire frame carried by the axle. a figure suspended from the frame, and a platform at times engaging the pins on the wheel. to actuate the figure.
a. A toy comprising an axle, a wheel having a series of lateral pins mounted on the axle, a wire frame carried by the axle, a figure suspended from the frame, and a platform with lateral depending members at times engaging the pins to actuate the figure.
5. A. toy comprising an axle, a wheel having a series of lateral pins mounted on the axle, a pair of rods extending upwardly from the axle, a figure suspended from the rods a platform rockingly mounted on the,
rods. and cam members depending from the platform for engagement with the pins to actuate the figure.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANDREW B. FOANS.
Witnesses SAM LEWIS, rimmer MILLER.
