lf'he principal objects of my inrention are, to provide a relatively simple and eflicient air nozzle that is capableof lcing easily and cheaply produced? constructed so that it may be readily applied to the sand discharge .iipes conduits now in general use and to i'irm the passageway through the nozzle so as to eliminate any possibility of its becom ing packed with sand to such a degree as to prevent the discharge of air pressure when the sander is operated to effect a discharge of sand onto the traclr rails.
Locomotive senders of ordinary construction include a substantially straight air nozzle that is located in the lower portion of a pocket in the discharge pipe that leads from the sand dome and it very frequently happens that the duct in this air nozzle and the air chamber immediately beneath said nozzle become filled with sand and the latter2 as a result of vibration while the locomotive is in service, becomes packed to such a degree as to prevent the compressed air, when turned on through the supply pipe leading to the sanding devices from blowing through the sand discharge pipe and performing its functions in the intended manner.
lt is the purpose of my invention to provide means in the form of a specially formed air Ainlet nozzle that will entirely eliminate the possibility of failure of the sanding device to operate due to packing of the sand in the nozzle or air inlet chamber associated with the sand discharge pipe, and to this end I propose to provide an air nozzle having a trap which will prevent the accumulation of any appreciable amount of sand in Specification of Letters Patent.

'W ith the foregoing and other objects in view, my intention consists in certain new and novel features of construction and arrangement of parts that will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l. is a rear elevational view of a locomotive sand dome with its sand discharge pipe or duct and which latter is equipped with an air inlet nozzle of my improved construction.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the ,sand dome and showing the sand outlet pipe therefrom and the compressed air pipe that lea-ds to said sand outlet pipe.

Referring by numerals to the accompany ing drawings, which illustrate a practical embodiment of my invention, l() designates the shell of a locomotive boiler, ll the sand dome. l2 the tubular member that leads from y the lower end of the sand dome and serves as a sand discharge pipe7 said tubular'member being provided immediately adjacent to the dome with a substantially U-shaped portion 13 that performs the function of a sand trap and leading from the outer end of the tubular discharge member l2 downwardly to a point immediately above the track rail that is traversed by the locomotive wheels is sand conveying pipe lll.
Depending from the bottom of the trap portion 1,3 of the sand discharge pipe .l2 is a relatively small housing l5 pri'ivided with a chamber 16, and leading thereto from a suitable source of compressed air supply is a pipe 17 which serves to convey compressed air to the sanding device and the passage or flow of compressed air through this pipe is controlled by a suitable valve preferably located in the locomotive cab.
My improved air nozzle is seated in the wall of member 13 immediately above the compressed air chamber 16 and projects upwardly into the passageway through the lJ-shaped member 137 and said nozzle includes a substantially rectangular body 18, preferably formed of metal and provided with a depending externally threaded shank 19 that is screw seated in the wall between chamberV 16 and the passageway through member 13.
Formed through body 18 and shank 19 is an air passageway 20 the upper end ofwhich is closed in any suitable manner, preferably by means of a plug or screw such as 21, and formed in the upper portion of body 18 immediately to one side of and parallel with said passageway 20 is a short duct or passageway 22, the same extending a short distance downwardly through the body 18.
Formed in the lower portion of the body 18 and establishing communication between the lower end of duct 0r passageway 22 with the upper portion of passageway 20, is a duct or passageway 23, the same being inclined so that it occupies an angle of approximately 450 with respect to a horizontal plane and the lower end 0I" this duct or passageway is closed in any suitable manner preferably by means of a plug or screw such as 211, thus the air passageway through the nozzle and which passageway includes the ducts 20, 22
and 23 is substantially Z-shaped, and theV inclined portion 23 of the duct disposed between the vertical portions 20 and 22 forms a trap that will receive and retain a relatively small portion of sand and consequently preventing the passage of any considerable amount of sand downwardly through the nozzle into the air chamber 16 and` which action, it will be understood,
would form a sand plug of such volume and Y lstability as would prevent the passage of compressed air into and through the sanding device in the usual and desired manner.
By thus providing a trap in the air nozzle, the lower portion of the passageway 20 in the nozzle and the chamber 16 are always nfree from sand and when the compressed air valve in supply pipe 17 is opened, said air is free to pass through chamber 16 in the lower portion of duct 2O and the force of said air will expel the relatively small amount of sand within the ducts 23 and 22 and will blow sand from the outer portion of the chamber within trap 13 downwardly through discharge pipe 141.
An air nozzle of my improved construction is comparatively simple, is applicable for use in connection with the sanding devices now in general use upon locomotives, and said nozzle is effective in preventing the sanding device from becoming inoperative due to packing of the sand within `the air nozzles and within the compressed air cham-V ber to which said nozzle is directly connected.
1t will be readily understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved air nozzle vmay be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of' which is set forth in the appended claim.
