Description

L. A. MURPHY.
CAR COUPLING.
APPLICATION FILED AuG.9, 1920.
1,382,530. Patented June 21,1921.
,UNITED STATES' ,PATENT .QFFICH LAWRENCE A.' MURPHY. or lstr. JOHN, NEW BRUNSWICK, CANADA CARJCOUPLING.
'f Application fiiea-August 9, 1920.5 semi No. 402,475.
T o all whom t may concern Be it known that I, LAWRENCE A. MURPHY, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at St. John, in the county ofSt. John and Province of New Brunswick, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Car-Couplings, of which the following is a tion of parts which hereinafter-will bemore particularly set forth, lillustrated in the accompanyingv drawings and pointed out yin the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a planv view of the improved coupler.
Fig. 2 is aside elevation of the improved coupler.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section theVv coupler.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal.section of-thel coupler showing the movable arm inan open position.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the cam which controls the movement of the movabler arm.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the movable Similar characters of reference indicateA like parts throughout the drawings. l
Referring to the drawings, A represents the improved coupler comprising a guard arm 1 formed integral with va shank 2,
^ which is provided with flanged ends 3.
The guard arm is provided with a horn 4 adapted upon inward movement of the coupler to strike the end sill or a striking casting, the shank being provided with ay Y shouldered butt for connection with a yoke.
The shank and body portion of the coupler are formed hollow, and in the outer end a rotatable conical member 5 is journaled, the
lateral wall of the rotatable member being formed arcuate and having aspiral cam race 6 therein. combined lock and knuckle thrower. o
The smaller end o-f the rotatable'member Said member 5 constitutes` a` A Specification of Letters fatent. Patented Jne 192i.
5 has its Vouter periphery away as shownvv at 7 and a spindle 8 extends from the said member through the lateral wall Vof the coupler and is adapted to be attached to any suitable' actuating means whereby the rotatable member() maybe rocked backwardly,
and forwardly as will be explained later.
.The body portion4 of the fixed jaw is formed with tongues y9 on the upper and lower walls and the arm 10 isattached tov these tongues by the hinge pin 11.
The coupler may be formed in two parts, as indicated by the center longitudinal line in Fig. 2.
The arm 10 has an inwardly extending end 12, the under face of which is formed with a cam surface 13 and the end of the arml co-actswith the cam race 6 in the rotatabley member 5.
v The outer portion of the arm 10 isA hooked Y to form a jaw and as the arm is rotated o n its hinge pin 11, the movable jaw 10'will be closed or opened. Y VWhen Vthis coupler is in use and it is desired to open the same, rotary motion is transmitted to the spindle 8 which in turn rotates the member 5, and the cam race 6 coacting with the inner end of the arm 10 will Vrock the same about its'hinge pin so that the movablev arm will assume a position whenj locked as is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 5;
If the arm 10 is rocked in the opposite directionby rotating the member 5 in a contraryk direction to that above explained, then the arm 10 will be opened as illustrated in Fig. 4.
The'opening' and closing of the movable jaw Vof the coupler can be readilyaccomplished by a trainman when standing out- 'side'of the tracks by means of any suitable mechanism attached to the spindle 8.
The lock may be assembled with the coupler head by separating the two parts of the latter, inserting the lock, and then securing` the said two parts together.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A car coupler comprising a body portion having a fixed jaw, a member rotatably mounted in the body portion having an arcuate lateral wall and a portion of the periphery cut away and a cam race formed on v the said member, an arm` pivotally mounted to the body portionand having an inwardly extending end having cam surface co-acting i with the cam race on the rotatable member,
I 2 l y 1,382,530
the outer end of the arm being bent to yform tending end and formed a am snrfiace' 10 a jaw as and for the purpose specified. With van inclined Wall andl co-ating with 2; A carcoupler 'comprising a body por-' the rotatable member.
Ltion having a iXed jaw, a member rotatably In testimony whereof I aHiX my signatureY mounted in the body portion and extending in the presence of two Witnesses. o transversely thereaoross and formed with a LAWRENCE A. MURPHY.
earn race and having its onter'per'iphery out ViWitnessesi:
away, a `movablel j aw pivotally `mounted to THOMAS L."KILI.EN, Y the body portion having an inwardly exy-l JOHN SULLIVAN.
