My invention relates to inking mechanisms for printing presses and relates particularly to inking mechanisms for rotary pr nting presses although certain features the same are not limited to this use alone.
Generally the features of the invention relate to theiuking mechanism and its re lated parts with a view toward. simplicity, compactness ..ease of manipulation, adaptability to various inking conditions, includ ing those present in a combination letter press printing and offset printing press, which be --operated to produce letter press printing, offset printingor both, and accessibility for various purposes such .as cleaning.

Corresponding horizontal slides 3 are formed in each side frame 2, and bearing blocksv 4 are mounted for horizontal sliding movement in. The main form respective of said slides. cylinder 5 has its ends ournaled in respec tive bearing blocks 4 and is movable horizontally and transversely of the axis thereof by reason of the sliding engagement of the bearing blocks 4 with the slides 3 as hereinbefore described. Horizontally disposed coiled compression springs 6 have their opposite ends abutting respective side frames 2 and bearing blocks 4 and exert their influence to move the bearing blocks 4 and the.

The bearing blocks 13 are held in proper position in theirrespective jaws by meansof adjusting screws 15 screw threaded into respective sideframes and abutting the under surface of respective bearing blocks 13, which are clamped against the achustmg screws 15 by means of clamping screws 16 which are screw threaded into spanners 17 and abutthe upper surface of respectivebearing blocks 13. r The spann'ers 17 are secured to the respective side frames by means of bolts The axes of the cylinders 5, 10 and 14 are parallel, and the cylinders 10 and 14 are disposed to contact the cylinder .5 atpoints lying on the side of vertical plane passing through the'axis of the cylin,- 'der 5 opposite the side of said vertical plane upon which the eccentric mechanism 7 isldis-l posed. As a result of this arrangement the eccentric mechanisms operate tomove thecyl nderv 5 to and away. from contact with, or operative relation with, both of the cylinders 10 and 14. Thus the operation of the eccentric mechanisms 'Ztornove the cylinder 5 to trip the same with respect to both of said cylinders or to restorethe same into operative relation with both of the cylinders as the case may be. 7
In the operation of the machine the mat-. ter to be printed is carried by the impression cylinder 14 from the feed-board 19 into impression relation with the form cylinder 5 and is thereafter discharged upon a sheet delivery mechanism'20. The usual mecha nism is employed to drive the cylinders 5, 10, and 14, and the sheet delivery mechanism 20 in unison, and inasmuch as this mechanism is not involved in the present invention it needs no further illustration description.
The cylinders 10 and 14 arepreferably two revolution cylinders and the cylinder 5. is preferably a single revolution cylinder, and said cylinders 10 and 14 are preferably disposed in the upper portion of the sector of the cylinder 5 defined by the aforementioned vertical plane passing through the axis thereof. This arrangement leaves the lower portion of said sector of the cylinder 5 free for engagement with the ink distributing mechanism which will now be described. Journaled in and extending across the space between the side frames 2 is a rock shaft 21,
' and secured upon this rock shaft is a pair of roller'fr ames' 22 each of which is disposed adjacent'a respective side frame 2, and on the inside thereof. The rock shaft21 extends outwardly of the'side frames and has secured thereon levers 23 which are disposed upon the outside of the respective side frames 2.1 The rock shaft 21. is disposed below the cylinder 5 and adjacent the vertical plane passing through theaxis thereof and the levers 23 extend therefrom in the same general direction as do the roller frames 22 whereby upward movement of the levers 23 move the roller frames 22 toward the cylinder 5. Lock levers 24 are disposed on respective sides of'the base 1,v and arefixedly mounted on the ends of a rock shaft 24 journaled in said base 1-, and extend upwardly from sald shaft and have locking formations 25 formed at the upper, ends thereof which are adapted'to engage respective studs 26, secured at the free ends, 7
of -respective levers 23, to lockthe roller frames 22 in operative position. The ink distributing rollers for the cylinder 5 are carried by the roller frames 22 and comprise 28 of thecylinder 5 when the roller frames 22 are lockedin operative position and the cylinder 5 is positioned in operative position, and'distributing rollers 29 intercontact- --form'rollers 27 arranged to contact the form ing the form rollers toproperly distribute; i and conduct the ink thereto. Secured upon each side frame on the outside thereof is a slide 30. Each slide supports the inner end of aroller frame 31 by means of an offset extension 32 of the roller frame 31 and a roller 33 rotatably mounted upon the inner end of the extension and engaging said slide. The roller frames 31 are disposed one on either side of the mechanism and a shaft 3 1 extends across the space between the same at the outer ends thereof and is journaled in each of the roller frames fr roller is mounted at each end of'the shaft 34 adjacent the respective roller frames'31 andis supported by a respective track 36. The tracks 36 are supported by the side frames in a manner to be hereinafter described and are disposed substantially parallel with the slides 30 whereby the roller frames 31 are supported for movement along said tracks and slides. The tracks 36 and the slides 30 are so disposed relatively to the form cylinder 10 that the roller frames 31 move along the same in a path which has a tangential relation with the said cylinder 10. flee Figs. 3 and 1. The shaft 3a is provided at either end with a pinion gear 37 which is secured upon said shaft and meshes with racks 38 formed upon respective tracks 36.
An operating handle 39 is secured at one end of the shaft 34 whereby the shaft 3 1 may be easily rotated to cause thepinions' 37 to move the roller frames along the track.

ed on respectlve extensions 01 the side frames 2, and the inner ends of said tracks 36 are supported upon eccentrics 11 which are secured upon a shaft 12 mounted for rotation in said extensions of the sideframes 2 and extending across the space between the same. By rocking the shaft 12 the lnner ends of the tracks 36 may be raised and lowered, which motion 1s transmitted to the outer end of the roller frames 31 when the same in opcra ve positiomsee i s. 1 and 3 so that the roller frames 3; pivoting upon the rollers 33 move upand down in the path disposed radially witl respect the cylinder 10. The ink distributing mechanism of the cylinder 10 is mounted upon the roller frames 31 and comprises form rollers 13. arranged to contact the said form cylinder 10 when the roller frames 31 are in operative position, and intercon tacting distributing rollers 1 1 arranged to distribute the ink properly throughout the form rollers; A lOClGIL lever 45. 1 ivotod to the ad acent side frame, is provided to engage a stud l6 secured at'the free endv of the operating handle 39, with a locking formation e7 to position the shaft 3 1- to hold the roller frames 31 with the roller 33 in engagement with the inner ends of the respective slides 30. When locked in this position the roller frames 31 may be moved the same, and so that the roller frames 22 may be moved downwardly past the same, see Fig. l. Cooperating with the ink foun tain 18 to'charge both of the ink distributing mechanisms two ductor rollers 19 and 50 and an ink transfer roller 51. The ductor roller 419 is mounted upon arm 52 which are secured to a rock shaft 53 journaled in the side-frames 2 and extending across the space between the same. The transfer roller 51 is carried by the roller frames 22 and is in contact with the adjacent intercontacting' roller 29 of the ink distributing mechanism which inks the cylinder 5. By oscillating the shaft 53, when the ink distributing mechanism of the cylinder 5 is in operative position, the ductor roller 19 contacts the ink fountain and the transfer roller51 alternately to transfer ink from the ink fountain to said roller. The ductor roller 50 is carried by 54; which are secured upon a rock shaft 55 journaled in the roller frames 31 and -xtending across the space between the same. By oscillating the rock shaft 55 when both of the ink distributing mechanisms are in operative position the ductor roller 50 alternately cents the transfer roller 51 and adjacent intercontacting roller {1 1 of the ink distributing mechanism of the cylinder 10 to transfer ink from the transfer roller 51 to the inter contacting rollers a l of said ink distrihuting mechanism. A lever 71 is pivoted on the adjacent .sideframe 2 and is provided at its free end with a roller 72 adapted for engagement with the cam 61. The lever 71 is held with the roller 72 in engagement with the cam 61 by means of a rod 7 3, having its one end pivoted to the lever 71 and having its other end slidably engaged in an apertured bracket 74, and a coiled compression spring 75 encircling said rod and abutting 1 v matron 47 with the stud 46 of the. operating the bracket 74 and the shoulder of the rod with its opposite ends. A connecting rod 76 has its one end pivoted to the lever 71-,and has a downwardly facing notch 77 formed adjacent its other end, which notch is engageable with a stud 78 formed upon the free end of a swinging arm 79 pivoted upon I the adjacent roller frame 31'. The stud 78 is also pivotally engaged by one end of a connecting link 80, which link has its other end pivoted to the adjacent arm 54. Through the mechanism just described the ductor' rollersj49 and are oscillated, as 1 above 3 described, and the cams and 61 are so timed that both of the ductor rollers 49-and' 50 engage the transfer roller 51 at the same time, so thatthe ductor roller 50 may take ink from the transfer roller '51'before the greater portion of the same has been trans-- studs and 78. In order that the rollerframes 22 may be lowered, as hereinbefore described, without interferencewith the duotor roller 49 a cam formation 81 is formed on the adjacent locking lever'24. which cam formation engages a stud 82, formedon the connecting rod 67 adjacent the notch 68 thereof, when, said locking lever 24 is moved to unlocking position and raises said con-- necting rod 67 to disengage the. notch 68 thereof from the stud 70". A retaining notch 83 is formed onthis locking lever 24 at the high ndof the cam formation 81 thereof and serves to engage the stud 82 to "retain; said lockinglever in unlocking posi.

By means of the connecting rod 1. When the adjacent arm 8 is positioned to maintain the cylinder 5 out of contact with the cylinders 10 and 14 and its related ink distributing mechanism, 1'. 0., its tripped position, the roller frames 31 are positioned so that the form rollers 43 are out of contact with the cylinder 10, as shown in Fig. 3. Thus when the cylinder 5 is tripped it is out ef'contact with the cylinders 10 and 14 and its related ink distributing mechanism, and the form rollers 43 are out of contact with the cylinder 10.
Pivotally mounted upon the stud 92 of the arm 91 is a stop block 93. This stop block is provided with a pin 94 overlying the connecting rod 90 and adapted to engage the same to limit the movement of the block in one direction, and a second pin 95 is formed on. the arm 91 to limit the movement of the block in the other direction. When the pin 94 of the stop'block 93 is engaged with the connecting rod 90 and the cylinder 5 is tripped, see Fig. 3, the block lies in the path of a stud 96 mounted on the adjacent arm 52 and prevents the rock shaft 53 from being moved to contact the roller 49 with the ink fountain 48 to prevent the ink distributing mechanisms from being charged. See Fig. 3. It will be noted that the spring 66 through its related parts provides the movement of the arms 52 toward the ink fountain and allows the path of movement of said arms to be shortened as described.
When the cylinder 5 is positioned in operative or printing position the block 93 is out of the path of movement of the stud 96 and allows the rock shaft 53 to be oscillated to contact the ductor roller 49 Y with the ink fountain. W'hen the stop block rollers supported thereby is counterbalanced by means of rods 97 shdably engaging re-- spective sockets 98, formed in the base 1, with their one end and having their other end nivotallv engaged by studs 99 of re spective tracks 36 and coiled compression springs 100 encircling respective of said rods andabutting the base 1 and shoulders of the repective rods with their opposite ends. The lifting tendency ofthe springs 100 is not sufficient to raise the tracks 36 away from the eccentrics 41 when the roller frames 31 are in operative position, see Fig. 1. To
prevent the springs 100 from raising thetracks 36 out of engagement with the eccentrics 41 when the roller frames 31 are positioned out of operative position, as shown in Fig. 4, the tracks 36 are provided with fingers 101 adapted to engage studs 102 aflixed to adjacent side frames to prevent the tracks from being lifted above highest position of the eccentrics 41 when the roller frames 31 are moved out of operative position as shown in Fig. 4.
It will be noted that the ink fountain 48 i.
whereby the same may be used in offset printing though not limited to this type of printing alone.
The form roller 43, which lies nearest the point of convergence of the cylinders 5 and 10, is provided with adjustable roller sockets 106 which are secured to respective roller frames 31 by means of headed screws 107 passing through slots 108 formed in the roller frames 31 and screw threaded into respective sockets 106 whereby the roller frames are clamped between respective sockets 106 and the heads of the respective s rews 107 to adjustably secure the sockets 106 to the respective roller frames. The slots 108 are so disposed as to allow adjustment of the sockets 106 to permit the sup ported form roller 43 to be positioned in inking relation with the cylinder 10 or the cylinder 5, thisroller being maintained in contact with the adjacent intercontacting roller 44 in either adjustment. Figs. 1, 3, and 4 show this roller in inking relation with cylinder 10 and Fig. 6 shows the same in inking relation with cylinder 5. By this arrangement the ink of the cylinder 5 may be increased, if so desired, without unduly deranging the mechanism. VVhenthe mechanism is used in this adjustment the remaining form rollers 43 are removed and the cylinder 10 moved out ofprinting relation with the cylinder 5 by loosening screws 109 which secure spanners 110'to the outer ends of respective jaws 9, which spanners maintain the bearing blocks abutting stop blocks 111 with cylinder in printing relation with cylinder 5, and moving the bearing blocks 11 along the jaws 9 out of engagement with stop blocks 111. See Figs. 1, 2,
a 3, and 1. If the usual metal transfer surface is used on the cylinder 10, it is only necessary to remove the same from the cy1-- inder to discontinue the printing relation between cylinders 5 and 10. It will be noted that, when the form roller 43, above mentioned, is adjusted in inking relation with the cylinder 5, the movement of the cylinder 5 out of printing position moves the same out of inking relation with this roller 13 in the same manner as it moves out of inking relation with the form rollers 27.
Vfhile I have herein shown and particularly described the preferred embodiment of mechanisms; and mechanism for controlling said second ink distribut ng mechanism and said charging means and having connection with said cylinder and movable therewith and adapted to render said second ink distributing mechanism and said charging means inoperative when said cylinder is positioned out of operable relation with said 'first mentioned ink distributing mechanism.

A printing press including an ink distributing mechanism movably mounted and adapted to be moved into and out of operative position; means for charging said ink distributing mechanism, and adapted to be rendered inoperative; and a locking means for locking said ink distributing mechanism in operative position, said locking means having connection with said charging means and adapted to render said charging means inoperative when said locking means is moved to unlocking position.
4. A printing press including an ink distributing mechanism movably mounted and adapted to be moved into and out of 0perative position; a charging means therefor which is inclusive of an actuating pin and a press actuated connecting rod provided with a notch engageable with the pin to actuate the same; means for locking said ink distributing mechanism in position, said looking means having connection with said connecting rod and adapted to disengage said notch from said pin when said locking means is moved to a certain position.
5. A 7 printing press including an ink distributing mechanism movably mounted and adapted to be moved into and out of 0perative position; a charging means therefor which is inclusive of an actuating pin and a press actuated connecting rod provided with a notch engageable with the pin to actuate V the same' means for lockin said ink distrib-V uting mechanism in operative position, said locking means having connection with said connecting rod and adapted to disengage said notch from said pin when said locking means is moved to unlockingposition. -6. A printing press including an ink distributing mechanism; a charging mechanism therefor; and means including a locking means for said ink distributing mechanism for locking said ink distributing mechanism in operative position and adapted to render said charging mechanism inoperative when said locking means is in unlocked position.

A printing press including a movably mounted cylinder; a movably mounted ink distributing mechanism; a charging means therefor; means operative with the movement of the cylinder in one direction to render said charging means functionless; and meanso aerative with the movement of said ink distributing mechanism in one direction to render said charging means inoperative. 8. A printing press including a movably mounted cylinder; at movably mounted ink distributing mechanism therefor a charging means therefor; means operative with the movement of the cylinder inone direction to render said charging means functionless; and means operative with the movement of said ink distributing, mechanism in one direction to render said charging means inoperative.

A printing press including .an ink distributing mechanism; charging means therefor; a cylinder in operable relation with said ink distributing mechanism, and mov- V able out of operable relation with said ink distributing mechanism, said ink distributing mechanism being movably mounted and movable out of operative relationwith said cylinder; means having connection with said cylinder and operable in unison therewith and adapted to render said charglng means functionless when said cylinder is positioned out of operable relation with said ink distributing mechanism; and means for rendering said charging means inoperative and operable to render said charging means inoperative when said ink distributing mechanism is moved out of operative position.

A printing aress including an ink distributing mechanism; charging means therefor; a cylinder in operable relation with said ink distributing mechanism and movable out of operable relation with said ink distributing mechanism, said ink distributing mechanism being movably mounted and movable out of operative relation with said cylinder; means having connection with said cylinder and operable in unison therewith and adapted to render said charging means functionless when said cylinder is positioned out of operable relation with said ink distributing mechanism; mean for locking said ink distributing mechanism in position; and a second means for rendering said charging means inoperative and having connection with said locking means and adapted to be positioned to render the charging means inoperative when said locking means is moved to a certain position.

A printing press including a form cylinder; a second form cylinder disposed. in printing relation with said first mentioned form cylinder; an ink distributing mechanism for said first iorm cylinder disposed adjacent and on one side of the point ot convergence of the peripheries of said cylinders; a support for said ink distributing mechanism adapted to allow areal movement of the same out of operative relation with its cylinder in a direction away from said point of convergence, the focal point of said are being disposed at the distant end of said ink distributing mechanism relatively to said point of convergence; a second ink distributing mechanism for said second form cylinder disposed adjacent said point of convergence on said one side and between said first mentioned ink distributin mechanism and said second form cylinder; a support for said second ink distributing mechanism adapted to allow movement of the same out of operative relation with its cylinder in a direction tangential to said second form cylinder and away from said Cir point of convergence; and an ink fountain common to said ink distributing mechaadjacentand on one side of the point of convergence of the peripheries of said cylinders; a support for said ink distributing mechanism adapted to allow movement of the same out of operative relation with its cylinder in a direction away from said point ofv convergence; a second ink distrlbuting mechanism for said second form cylinder disposed adjacent said point of convergence on said one side and between said first mentioned ink distributing mechanism and said second form cylinder; a support for said second ink distributing mechanism adapted to allow movement of the same out of 0perative relation with its cylinder in a direction away from said point of convergence; an ink fountain; and a ductor roller in operable relation therewith, said ink fountain and ductor roller being common to said ink distributing mechanisms and disposed between the paths of movement of said ink distributing mechanisms.

A printing press including a form cylinder; a second form cylinder disposed in printing relation with said first mentioned form cylinder; an ink distributing mechanism for said first form cylinder disposed adjacent and on one side of the point of convergence of the peripheries of said cylinders; a support for said ink distributing mechanism adapted to allow areal movement ofthe same out of operative relation with its cylinder in a direction away from said point of convergence, the focal point of said are being disposed at the distant end of said ink distributing mechanism relatively to said point of convergence; a second ink distributing mechanism for said second form cylinder disposed adjacent said point of convergence on said one side and between said first mentioned ink distributing mechanism and said second form cylinder; a support for said second ink distributing mechanism adapted to allow movement of the same out of operative relation with its cylinder in a direction away from said point of convergence; an ink fountain; and a ductor roller in operable relation therewith, said ink fountain and ductor roller being common to said ink distributing mechanisms and disposed between the paths of movement of said ink distributing mechanisms.

A printing press including a form cylinder; a second form cylinder disposed in printing relation with said first mentioned form cylinder; an ink distributing mechanism for said first form cylinder disposed adjacent and on onevside of the point of convergence of the peripheries of said cylinders; a support for said ink distributing mechanism adapted to allow movement of the same out of operative relation with its cylinder in a direction away from said point of convergence; a second ink distributing mechanism for said second form cylinder disposed adjacent said point of convergence on said one side and between said first mentioned ink distributing mechanism and said second form cylinder; a support for said second ink distributing mechanism adapted to allow movement of the same out of operative relation with its cylinder in a direction tangential to said second form cylinder and away from said point of convergence; an ink fountain; and a ductor roller in operable relation therewith, said'ink fountain and ductor roller being common to said ink v distributing mechanisms and disposed between the paths of movement of said ink distributing mechanisms.

42. A printing press including a form cylinder; a second form cylinder in printing relation therewith; ink distributing mechanism for the second form cylinder adapted to be adjusted to ink the first form cylinder.

46. A printing press including a form cylinder; a second form cylinder; and ink distributing mechanism for one form cylin der including a roller adapted to be adjusted to ink either of said form cylinders.

A printing press including a form cylinder; an ink distributing mechanism therefor; a second form cylinder; ink distributing mechanism for the second form cylinder adapted to be adjusted to ink the first form cylinder to supplement said first mentioned ink distributing mechanism when adjusted to ink said first mentioned cylinder. 48. A printing press including a form cylinder; an ink distributing mechanism therefor; a second form cylinder; ink dis tributing mechanism for the second form cylinder including a plurality of form rollers and an adjustable support for one form roller adapted to be adjusted to ink either cylinder to supplement said first mentioned ink distributing mechanism when adjusted to ink said first mentioned cylinder.

A printing press including a form cylinder; an ink distributing mechanism therefor; a second form cylinder in printing relation therewith; ink distributing mechanism for the second form cylinder adapted to be adjusted to ink the first form cylinder.
