` closingthe openings or ways This invention is an improvement in or modification of the invention set forth in Specification No. 119501 and has reference to doors applicable for smoke boxes, and for through bulkheads, partitions, walls and the like, where it is desired to make a practically fluid tight 'orl firepr'oof door which can be readily opened and closed.
These improvements relate to the means by which a water, steam or gas tight jointv is obtained when the door is closed, also to certain constructional features of the door fastening means. They also relate to mechanism by which the door fastening means is only allowed to be slid into the shot position when the door is completely closed.
These improvements will .be understood from the following description reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the door;

,Referring first to Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings, 1 represents a portion of a partition,

The door plate has a marginal frame 8 (made of metal angular in cross section)V applied to it, that is to say, one edge is made with a projecting rib 8*, and this marginal frame, which embodies three sides of a rectangle, has a sliding movement in suitable guide pieces 9 ends of such guide pieces being arranged to overlap the marginal frame so that the latter cannot be separated from the door plate. The said marginal frame rests against the off-set portion 2X'of the ,door plate, and riveted to it are the wedge bars 10 and '11. These take into beveled' flanges or socketsl 12 and 13 which are riveted to the partition 1 adjacent to the doorway or opening therein. The flanges or sockets 12 vare beveled as shown in Fig. 3, and the' flanges or sockets 13 are beveled as shown in Fig. 4 so that when thev door is closed, thesliding ofthe mar-k ginal frame will cause the wedge bars 10 and 11 to wedge themselves into their respective fianges or sockets 12 and 13 thus pressing the jointing material 4 at all the four sides of the perimeter of the door plate against the rib'l of the ydoorway Aopening and make a water, steam or gas tight joint. The member of the marginal frame opposite to that of the hinges 3, lies coincident with the off-set portion 2 only when the door is in the fastened position, while the other two members of the marginal frame always lie coincident with the said off-set portion', whether the door is in the fastened position or not.

loo f frame by means of a cam 14- secured to the spindle 15 journaled in the door plate 2, the said cam being confined between the marginal frame 8 and an abutment 16 secured by arms 17 to the said frame 8. By turning one or other of the handles 18, the cam will impart ,to the said frame 8 a sliding movement in one direction to fasten the door, or in the other direction to unfasten it.
The hinges 3 are so arranged relatively to thedoor and stationary partition 1, that in the act of closing the door, the j ointing material at the side of the door plate adj acent to lthe hingeswill first impact against the complemental rib 1* of the doorway opening and the complete closing of the door will exert a leverage whichbinds the said jointing material against the said rib as to produce, a very secure water tight joint. If desired the hole in the hinges 3 through which the pins pass may be made oval to permit of the door closing toward the partition 1 -after the said j ointing material at thek side adjacent to the hinges has impacted Vagainst the complemental rib 1*. Atthe other threesides of the perimeter of the door platey 2 a very secure joint is produced by thev action of the wedge bars 10 and 11 which take into the beveled anges orsockets 12 and 13, so as to bind the jointing material at top and bottom of the door and at the side of the door opposite to the hinges, against its complemental ribs 1 .V
Consequently the ribs ybear equally at all points on the jointing material Aand insure a erfect joint.
t will be readily understood that itis most important there should be no obstruction to prevent the door being closed quickly and promptly, when any emergency arises. If by accident or otherwise, the marginal frame with its wedge bars were slid into the shot or partly shot position before the clos- ,ing of the door had beenv effected an obstruction to the doors closing would be caused, which would result in delay, and this in the confusion thatsometimes happens when an emergency occurs, might be fatal.
x In order to prevent this I provide a mechanism by which the wedge bars are held lockedin the withdrawn position so that they cannot be shot outward until the door is completely closed. This mechanism shown in Figs. 5 to 7 as applied.to the door of Figs. 1f to 4, consists of a locking device which only becomes operative when the door is open or partly open, that is to say it becomes operative immediately the handle is turned to unlock the door and rwhich continues in operation until theV door is closed again. lThis locking device may be arranged to interlock with a part in connection with the handle, or to interlock with the wedge the handle cannot be turned until the'door is again closed. I show in the drawings the latter arrangement, but recognize that the specific form and location of the device are subject to modification.
This device is best shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 The arm or tappet marked 43 is pivoted in a bracket 44 secured to the door plate 2, such armor tappet being shaped at its outer end so as to impact against the par-v tition or bulkhead 1 or other suitable abutment when the door is closed, while the inner end of this arm or tappet has a spring 45 in connection with it, so arranged as to keep the outer end of the tappet projecting beyond the inner face of the door when the door is open. This arm or tappet projects across the marginal frame 8, which has ka transverse notch 46 in it adjacent to the said tappet 43 and the spring 45 (when the door is open) keeps the tapnet in locking engagement with the notch 46. Therefore so long as the door is open or partly open the tappet 43 engaging'this notch 46, prevents the marginal frame with its -Vwedge pieces being moved, but when'the .door is closed the outer end of the tappet impacting against the partition or bulkhead 1 turns the tapet on its pivot 47.y thuslifting it out of engagement with the notch 46 vand enabling the operating handle 18 to be turned. Instead of a notch, a shoulder or other device could be arranged on the tappet to engage with the marginal frame or a wedge bar. l
I d eclare that what I claim is 1. The combination of a door Vframe, a door hinged thereto, a shiftable locking frame and coacting keeper, one mounted on the door frame and the other on the door; a releasable interlock device operatively related to said locking frame to retain the same in disengaged position; and means operated by the movement of the door near the limit of its closing movement'serv'ing to release said interlock and permit movement of said frame.
2. The combinationof a door frame; a door hingedfthereto; a shiftable locking frame and coacting keeper one mounted on the door frame and the other on the door; a yielding latch 'serving when projected to hold the locking frame against movement: and a member operable by the relative movement of the door and frame as the door nears its'closed position, and serving when operated to retract said latch.
3. The combination of a door frame; a door hinged thereto; a locking frame movably mounted in said Vdoor and having a plurality of beveledl locking lugs; keepers mounted insaid door frame and'adaptedto receive said beveled lugs; a spring-urged latch mounted on said door in position to be engaged and held kretracted bysaid door frame when the door is closed, and a stop in said locking frame adapted to-be enga ed by said latch When the latter is projecte to preclude movement of said lockin frame.
4. The combination ot' a door ame provided With a rib projecting from its face and surrounding the door opening, a door plate hinged to said frame and formed with a recess opposed to said rib when the door is closed; j ointing material clamped in said recess and serving to seal against said rib when the door is closed; a marginal frame slidably mounted on the face of the door plate; Wedge lugs secured to said marginal frame and projecting beyond the edge of said door late; keepers mounted on the door frame aving beveled recessesserving to receive the said lugs when the frame is slid in one direction and to release said lugs when it is ORSINI STUART.
