HATER-HEATER USING A FLUID FUEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN F. GoonwIN, of the city of Sarnia, in the county of Lambton, Province of @ntario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in winter-Heaters Using a Fluid Fuel, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that type of Wat-,r heater in which the heated products combustion from a fluid burner located at the bottom of a casing are led around or through a series of connected water sections through which the water circulates, and my object is to devise a heater of this type which, while cheap to construct, is much lighter in weight and quicker in heating than ordinary heaters using cast iron sections.
I attain my object by means of the con structions hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a heater con structed in accordance with my invention with the door open, and partly broken away;

In the drawings like numerals of refer ence indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
1 is a casing, which is provided with a door 2, preferably of substantially half the circumference of the casing. The top of the casing is provided with the cover 3, through which is formed the opening to the vent pipe, which opening is surrounded by a collar 4. An opening for the passage of the outlet Water pipe 5 is also formed in the cover.
In the fixed half of the casing near the bottom is located the burner 7, which is supported on ribs 6 formed on the casing. 8 are the water sections. These are all of the same construction, size and shape, and are connected in serieis. The inlet water pipe 9 communicates with the bottom section and the outlet water pipe 5 with the top section.
Each water section in plan is shaped as the segment of a circle, having the same radius as the interior of the casing, the segment being greater than a semi-circle.
A water connection 10 is secured in an openmg in one side of the section at the center of a circle of which the curved edge of the section is an are. A second water con nection 11 communicates with an opening in the other side close to the curved edge and substantially at the same distance from the straight edge of the section as the first mentioned opening. These water connections are connected by nipples 12 so that each section is connected by its central connection with the adjacent section at one side and by its peripheral connection with the water section at the other side.
Each section is also provided with partitions forming a tortuous water channel through the section which will cause the water flowing through the section to circulate over substantially all the heating surface of the same. In the preferred arrangement I employ two partitions 13 and 14. The partition 13 starts from the straight edge of the section adjacent the outer opening and extend substantially concentric with the curved side to a point adjacent to but spaced from the straight ec ge at the other side, while the second partition, substantially concentric with the first, starts from the straight edge at the opposite side of the central opening and extends about said central opening to a point adj acentto, but spaced from the straight edge. These partitions are so spaced and proportioned as to provide a continuous water way of ap proximately the same cross sectional area at all points in its length. The flow of water through the section is thus continuous and easy without any sudden contractions and expansions to cause local variations in the rate of flow and the consequent loss of circulating power.
As my object is to make the heater as light as possible and adapted for quick heating, 1 have devised a construction by means which the sections may be made oi sheet metal stampings. Each section as shown is formed of six parts welded together. These parts are the two stamped plates 15 having turned down edges 16, the two partitions l3 and 14, and the water connections 10 and 11. The partitions 13 and i l are each provided with lugs 17 adapted to enter similarly shaped slots formed in the plates 15. The water connections 10 and 11 are preterahly rabbeted so as to fit into the openings in the plates, while the shoulders formed by sembled and the meeting edges of the plates Welded electrically or by oXy-acetylene flame, also the lugs 17 in their slots and the 'Water connections 10 and 11 in their opening. 1 i
What I claim as my invention is 1. A sheet metal water section for a Water heater shaped in plan as the segment of a circle greater than a semi-circle and formed of two horizontal par s Welded together and provided with a Water connection opening in one side at'the centerof the circle of which the curved edge of the section is an arc, and a second Water connetition opening in the other side close to the curved edge and also to the straight edge oi: the
section, a Sheet metal partition starting from the straight edge of the section adjacent the outer opening and extending substantially concentric With the curved side to a point adjacent to but spaced from the said straight edge, a second partition substantially concentric with the first starting from the straight edge at the opposite side of the central opening from the starting point of the first partition and extending about said central opening to a pointadjacentto but spaced from the straight edge, the partitions being spaced and proportioned to provide a continuous aterway of approximately the same cross sectional a casing in which said sections are contained, said sections being set with their curved edges substantially touching the easing, but in difierent positions so that products of combustion passing through the casing are caused to follow a tortuous course about the sections on their Way from the burner to the upper 'end 01": the casing.
