Be it known that 1, Cinemas BLUE Vi amin, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Composing- Stick, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to printing and its object is to provide a new and improved composing stick arranged to enable the user to open the filled stick for removal of the set-up type or any part thereof.
Another object is to enable the compositor to correctly set the type in case a stereotype or other insert is to be used in conjunction with the said type and without re quiring such stereotype for the insert on the stick.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and de scribed and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all. the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the composing stick.
Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 8 is aperspective view of the knee; and
Fig. 4 is a similar view of the setting member.
The composing stick in its general construction comprises a body 10, a side wall 11, an end wall 12, a knee 13 and a setting member 14, the knee and setting member being slidable on the side wall 11 to permit of adjusting the knee relative to the end wall 12 according to the height of the col- The body 10 is preferably made of glass or other diapha-nous material and its upper face is roughened or frosted to permit of conveniently tracing thereon with a lead pencil, chalk or other means, at any desired portion the outline 20 of an electrotype or other insert around which the type is to be grouped. The side wall 11 the end wall 12, the knee 13 and its setting member 14 are preferably made of metal and the said side wall 11 and the end wall 12 are secured to the body 10 by screws or other suitable fastening devices 21.
The knee 13 extends across the body 10 and is provided at its right hand end with spaced lugs 26 having at their under sides registering grooves or guide-ways 2T slidingly engaging the side wall 11. The setting member 14 extends between the lugs 25 and 26 and is provided on its under side with a groove or a guideway 30 slidingly engaging the side wall 11. A set screwfil screws in the outer side of the setting'menr ber 14 and abuts against the side wall 11 to fasten the setting member 14 in position after the knee 13 and the setting member 14 are set to the desired position. The lugs 25 and 26 are spaced apart a distance in excess to the length of the setting member 14 to allow the compositor to move the knee 13 a short distance rearward on the side wall 11 independent of the setting member 14. Normally the knee 13 is in forward position as shown in Fig. 1 and is locked therein by a locking bolt 40 adapted to engage an opening 41 formed in the setting member 14. (See Fig. 2.) The bolt 40 is mounted to slide in a bore 42 formed sidewise in the knee 13, and the bolt 40 is provided with a reduced portion 43 terminating in. a knob 44 adapted to be taken hold of by the compositor for moving the bolt 40 out of locking position relative to the opening 41 in the setting member 14. The bolt 40 is pressed on by a spring 45 coiled around the reduced portion 43 and extending within the bore 42. By the arrangement described the spring 45 normally holds the bolt 40 in engagement with the opening 41 at a time the lug 25 of the knee 13 is spaced from the forward end of the setting member 14.
In using the composing stick the compositor loosens the set screw 31 and moves the setting member 14 and the knee 18 forward or rearward on the side wall 11 until the distance between the end wall 12 and the knee 13 corresponds to the height of the column of type to be set at a time. When this has been done the compositor screws up the set screw 31 to fasten the setting member 14 and the knee 13 in the adjusted position, it being understood that the knee 13 moves with the setting member 14 owing to the bolt 40 engaging the opening 41. The compositor now fills the composing stick in the usual manner with the type and by having the outline of an electrctype or other insert posing stick has been filled the compositor moves the knob a l to the 7 left, thus withdrawing the bolt l9 from the opening all, thereby unlocking the knee 13 from the setting member 1% and allowing the compositor to slide the knee l3 rearwardly until its lug abuts against the forwa d end of the setting member i l. The type is now unlocked and can be readily removed from the composing stick. When this has been done the compositor simply pushes the knee 13 forward until the bolt lOsnaps into the opening ll, thus again locking the knee 13 to the setting member i l. The composing stick can new again be filled with another set of type. The composing stick shown and described is Very simple, durable in construction, and composed of comparatively few parts not liable to get out of order easily.
I claim: 1. composing stick having a diaphanous body, and means thereon to permit of tracing the outline an insert on the said body. 2. A composing stick having a diaphanous body provided witha roughened surface to permit of tracing thereon the outline of an insert. i
3. A composing stick comprising a body having a fixed end wall, a fixed side wall and a knee slidable on the side wall, and a setting member slidable on the side wall and adapted to be fastened thereto, the said knee having a limited sliding movement relative to the said setting member to allow of opening the stick without disturbing the set thereof.
4:. A composing stick comprising a body raving a fixed end wall, a fixed side wall and knee slidable on the side wall, and a setting member slidable on the side wall and adapted to be fastened thereto, the said knee having a limited sliding movement relative to the said setting member to allow of opening the stick without disturbing the set thereof, and a locking means adapted to lock the knee to the setting member when in set position and to allow of unlocking and opening the knee relative to the setting member.
5. A composing stick comprising a body having a fixed end wall, a fixed side wall and a knee, the knee having spaced lugs slidably engaging the said side wall, a setting member slidably engaging the said side wall and eX- tending between the said lugs to permit a limited sliding movement of the knee relative to the setting member, a set screw fastening the setting member to the said side wall and a spring pressed locking pin slidable on the knee and adapted to engage the said setting memberto lock the knee in place on the set ting member.
6. A composing stick comprising a body, a knee and a setting member forthe knee, the knee and setting member being slidable on the said body and the knee having a limited sliding movement relative to the setting member, a set screw fastening thesetting member to the said body, and a spring pressed locking bolt adapted to lock the knee to the setting member.
