Be ,it known that I, .ALFRED C. O. BOOK, a subject of Germany, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful `Improvements in Locks; and I, do
. hereby declare the following to bek a full,
. in locks, the object being to provide a lookv clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same.
`My invention relates to an improvement with bolt mechanism constructed to interlock with the strike plate or keeper so as to prevent a separation of these parts by jimmying or otherwise, and it consists in the parts and combination ofparts as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanyingdrawings; Figure 1lis a view of the lock showing the rear Or outer face of the casing removed and the bolts in their retracted or unlocking position; Fig. 2 is a similar viewshowing the bolts projected; Fig. 3 is a view in horizontal section showing the bolts retracted; Fig. 4v is a similar view showing the bolts projected; Fig. 5 is a view in transverse section of the lock casing and bolt, and Fig. 6 is a view in perspectiveof the bolt and its tumbler,the latter lbeing sho-wn at one side of the bolt.
10 represents the face plate of a lock adapted to be secured to a door, and 11 is`v the lock casing secured to the face plate by screws 12 which pass through the front end of the casing and engage threaded openings in the edge flange 13 of the face plate 10.
The knob shank 14 is .j ournaled in the lock casing and carries the roll back 15, whichl when turned, engages'the T-shaped end 16*1 or tumbler 16, and a shoulder 17 or 17 n on the bolt 18 'and shifts the tumbler 16 in a direction to release the mainor deadlocking bolt I and move the latter from one of its positions -to the other.
The knob shank 14 is provided with a cam 19 which is engaged by the spring actuated lever 20 which operates to yieldingly hold the roll back in its normal position out of contact with the tumbler 16 and shoulder 17---172L of bolt'18.
The bolt 18 is' slotted on its front face to receive the roll back 15, and is slotted transit is provided onY both faces at the front of the groove'for the tumbler with the shoulders 17 which are engaged by the roll back 15 on the knob for shifting the bolt to its plrojected position, and with similar shoulers `17at the rear of said slot, the said shoulder-at one side of the bolt adapted to be engaged by the roll back, and the shoulders at 4the opposite side of the bolt are engaged by the cam 21 which latter is connected with the key lock 22 and actuated by the latter in the usual and well known manner, so that the bolt may be projected and retracted by either the `knob 23 or by a key entered in nthe lock 22.
Y The bolt is further provided on its rear face with a recessed seat for the spring 24 which engages a shoulder 25 on the tumbler 16 and operates to yieldingly hold the end 26 'of the latter within one of the recesses tumbler rests within the recess 27 nearer ner faces of the hook shaped bolt 29 as shown in Fig. 3 sol 'that when the dead locking bolt 18 is moved outwardly to its locking posi'- tion, it turns thehook shaped bolt 29 on its pivots'andprojects it into the keeper 31 and also follows it into thekeeper as shown in Fig. 4 and not only performs the function "'of an ordinary bolt, but backs up and reinforcesthe said-hoOk-shaped bolt 29. As the Ihook shaped bolt is Aturned on its pivots, it
enters the keeper and its hook shaped end 32 overlaps the latter, So that when the door is locked the hook shaped bolt is positively ideadlocked and reinforced by the main bolt 18. The 'overlapping of the keeper by the hook shaped end 32 of the bolt 29, locks the two parts against separation, hence when the door is locked there can be no separation of the lock from the keeper by a jimmy or other tool introduced between the door and the jamb, or between the lock and the keeper.
" In the operation of the lock by a key or by the knob, the cam or the key mechanism,
or the roll back or the knob mechanism first engages the T-shaped head of the tumbler 16 and shifts the latter endwis'e to disengage it from the fixed plate 28, thus freeing the main or deadlocking bolt 18 and permitting it to be projected or moved outwardly by the engagement of the roll back 15 or the cam 21 with a shoulder 17 on the bolt. As the bolt moves outwardly it engages the hookv18, and when in such position its hook 32 overlaps the keeper 31 thus positively connecting the latter with the lock so that there can be no separation of the keeper from the lock. When the main bolt 18 has been fully projected, the end 26 of the tumbler 16 enters the recess 27*1 in the fixed plate 28 and thus locks the bolt 18 against movement exceptl by its key or knob mechanism, and as the bolt 18 rests against and reinforces the hook shaped bolt, it follows that the latter cannot be disengaged from the keeper without rst retracting the bolt 18. As the b'olt 18 is withdrawn or retracted by its knob or key mechanism, the hook shaped bolt will be retracted by it spring 30 which latter holds it yieldingly housed in the casing 11. The hook shaped bolt is moved into locking position by the main bolt 18 and is returned to its normal position by the spring and is not directly actuated by i either the knob or the key mechanism.
It is evident that many slight changes might be resorted toin the relative arrangement of parts shown and described without.
departing from lthe spirit and'scope of my invention, hence I 'would have it understood that I do not wish to confine myself to the exact construction and arrangement of parts i shown and described but,
Having fully described my invention what I claim `asnew and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is l 1. In alock, the combinationof a keeper, a lock casing, a hook shaped bolt normally retained within the lock casing and adapted when projected to interlock with the keeper, and a positively actuated main bolt adapted to force said hook shaped bolt to locking position and reinforce it Vwhile in such position.
3. In a lock, the combination of a casing, a hook shaped bolt pivoted to the casing and adapted to be projected by a main bolt, a main bolt adapted to reinforce and back up the hook shaped bolt and a tumbler carried by the main bolt vand adapted to lock the latter in its two positions.
4. In a lock, the combination of a keeper, a lock casing, a hook shaped bolt, a spring for normally retaining the latter within the lock casing, a main locking bolt for projecting the Vhook shaped bolt 'and for reinforcingit when projected anda tumbler mounted in the main bolt and adapted to move transversely of the latter andr fixed means engaged by said tumbler for locking the main bolt in its two positions.
5. Ina lock, the combination of a keeper, a casing a hook shaped bolt, Va spring tending to normally hold the said bolt within the casing, a sliding bolt adapted to engage Vthe hook shaped bolt `and move it into locking position and reinforce it when in such position, a tumbler carried by the bolt and movable transversely to the latter, fixed means to be engaged by said tumbler for locking the sliding bolt in its twojpositions and knob mechanism for actuating the tumbler to release the sliding bolt and for shifting the latter.
6. In a lock the combination of a keeper, a lock casing, a pivoted hook shaped bolt normally held within'the lock casing by a spring and adapted to -be projected by a sliding bolt, a sliding bolt adapted to engage the hook shaped bolt for moving the latter into engagement with the keeper and for reinforcing it when in such position, a
