WALTER F. GAUNT, 'OF BIRMINGEAMyENGLAND.
MEDAL-RIBBON BAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June *7, 1921.
Application filed February 10, 1920. Serial No. 357,734. i
T all 10 how it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER F RANOIS I GAUNT, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of \Varstone Parade lVorks, IVarstone Parade, Birmingham, lVarWick, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Medal- Ribbon Bars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention has reference to medal ribbon bars and to the means for securing the same to a button-hole or the like of a garment.
. According to this invention a medal ribbon bar having attached to it one or more medal ribbons or imitation medal ribbons has fixed to the back of it or to the back of a back plate fixed to the medal ribbon bar,
one or more fiat section stems, each of which has a crescent-shaped or oblong or other attachment part like the back of a solitaire, adapted to be passed through a button-hole or the like of a garment and thus secure the medal ribbon bar thereto and enable said medal ribbon bar to be readily removed from the button-hole or the'like when required.
Said stem with its solitaire-like attachment part, or stems with their solitaire-like attachment parts, can be constructed and arranged and combined with the medal ribbon bar in various ways as I will now describe by referring to the accompanying drawings of which Figure 1 is a back elevation of a medal ribbon bar furnished at the back with a crescent-shaped attachment part in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2 is a sideelevation thereof;
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same but drawn on alarger scale than are Figs. 1 and 2;
Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are perspective views of the separate parts of the medal ribbon bar and its attachment part shown in Figs. 1,
2 and 3; 7
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a modified form of back plate for use with the portion of the medal ribbon bar shown in Fig. 4;
Fig. 8 is a plan and side elevation of a sheet-metal blank for forming the crescentshaped attachment in Figs. 1, 2, 6 and 7;
Fig. 9 is a plan of a sheet-metal blank for forming the modified form of combined vtachment formed Fig. 9.
part and its stem shown back bar and attachment part shown in Fig. 10; and
Fig. 10 is a perspective view of the atfrom the'blank shown in In the arrangement of my invention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 the medal ribbon bar consists of a parallel-sided bar 1, see Figs. 3 and 4, with backwardly extended edges 2, 3, over which the ends of the medal ribbon B are folded and secured by the edges 2, 3, of the bar and a second plate: 5
(shown separately in Fig. '5) which latter has backwardly projecting tongues 6 pierced and raised out of it which are closed down over the edges and on to the back of a back plate 7. The latter has a crescent-shaped solitaire-like attachment part 8 of which the stem 9 is soldered or otherwise fixed to the back of the plate 7, preferably slightly askew as shown in Fig. 1 so as to conform with the inclination of the button-hole in the lapel of a mans coat and cause the medal ribbon when worn to be about horizontal.
In a modification of my invention the secondplate 5 over which the medal ribbon are closed as above described is made without the tongues 6 and has the stem 9 of the crescent-shaped part 8 fixed directly to it as shown in Fig. 7. This obviates the necessity of using the third plate 7 as above described. further modification the plate .5 (Fig. 7) to the back of which the stem 9 of the'crescentshaped attachment part 8 is fixed as afore said may itself form the medal ribbon bar, and in this case the medal ribbon will be fixed directly to the plate 5' by sewing or by an adhesive or by other suitable means.
In the arrangement of my invention illustrated by Figs. 1, 2, 3, 6 and 7, the crescentshaped attachment part 8 and its stem 9 are formed in the known manner in one piece from a sheet-metal blank such as shown in Fig. 8 which is crescent-shaped with a central fiat section stem 9 projecting forwardly between the horns. This stem is then bent to project at right angles from the face of the crescent and is soldered or otherwise fixed to the back of the medal bar or part such as the plate 7 or the plate 5.
If desired however the soldering may be dispensed with and the crescent-shaped attachment part 8 with its stem 9 be formed in a piece with the bar or plate as shown the backwardly extended edges of the front plate 1 and If desired as a for instance in Figs. 9 and 10. In this case it will be seen that the blank is shaped so as to form the cross bar 7 at the end of the" suit the button-hole in the lapel of the coat as above stated. i In any case the ribbon on the medal ribbon bar may be covered by a piece of thin transparent sheet celluloid which is placed on the outside of the ribbon and is with the ends of the ribbon closed over and secured by closing the plate as above described. If desired as a further modification instead of the back attachment part 8 of the net section stem 9 being crescent-shape, it
may be oblong or other suitable shape like the back of a solitaire as will readily be understood.
'What I claim is as follows:
A combined medal ribbon bar and attachment means comprising a parallel-sided bar adapted to have a ribbon stretched thereon with the ends of the ribbon folded over the parallel sides thereof, a plate located at the back of saidbar and adapted to clamp the ends of the ribbon thereon, the edges of the bar extending backwardly and clamping the said plate upon the bar, a second plate, backwardly projecting tongues upon the first plate and closed down over the edges of said second plate,'and a backwardly projecting crescent-shaped attachment member upon said second plate r I In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
WALTER F. GAUNT.
