TQUZZ wlw/mit may concern: j i l Be it known that we, CHARLES W.`CLE
' LAND and'JArMEs G. CLELND, both' citizens of the United States, residing at Baldwin Park, in the county of Los Angeles and Statev of California, have inventedl a new. rand Vuseful Cement-Block Mold,\of whichV the following is a specification. f
This invention relates to a mold for makyingbuilding blocksof cement concrete., and' An, Object is te provide@ mold for maid-y ing blocks from wet 'cement concrete and one in which the moldsides may be forced t'ol gether to mechanically compress the material of the block. The moldican be construct- 'l ed yfor either hand or automatic tamping c and in the `drawi'ngfthe hand fmachinehwilll be illustrated.` Y
The yinvention comprisesa mold having relatively adjustable end andr lside walls which converge toward. each other awayfrom the transverse mid-line ofthe mold,
` l and the end wallsare provided withwings that divergefrom eachotherv toward said mid-line; and-means toA alternately force said end-walls with Ytheir wings toward and from saidmid-linei- Y Said wall forcing meansl are also preferably constructed and arranged to draw to gether and to, separatethe side and end walls and the same is constructed 'to comprise a handle to liftthe-'mold when itis opened. f
The invention Ais applicableto theV molding of two blocks at once and tothis end is provided with a longitudiiialy partition which is adapted Ato remain withfth'ewalls during the handling Yof the mold.
An object is to reduce the time and ylabor Y required for producing blocks of the chan.

Other objects, advantages and features ofj4 .inventionlmay 'appear from the accompany- -in'g drawings, the subjol'ned detail descriptionY and the lappended claims.

The mold isprovidedwith a vcentral partition 9 having end fingersV lO to restupon the vtop edges of the end pieces which are provided withnotches at V11 tov cause-said In carrying out the invention aVV resilient fingers tobe held centrally between the side pivots l2 upon which the connecting` rods are pivoted. rlie bail is arranged to turn the operating pieces to mold-contacting position when the bail is down and to expanded position when the bail is up7 so that when it is desired to remove the mold from the block, all that is necessary is to simply raise the bail and then lift the mold by the bail.
il.. reverse operation closes the moldin the ordinary course of operation. v
The parts are so arranged that when the bail is thrown over to the lett in Fig. l, the connecting rods will pass dead center so thatthe strain tends to hold the mold trom opening.
The invention may be embodied in a machine ot any desired dimensions; the principle being` expansion and contraction of the mold by operating two diverging members3 as the end members, with respect to other two diverging members, as the side members.
It is understood that the bail is connected through the operating pieces andthe connecting rods to expand and contract the mold both as to length and width, by reason ot the diverging and converging end and side walls that operate in pairs ot walls that Y slide uponV each other in the operation ot contractingthe mold as the bail is lowered to horizontal position and that have endwise y relative movement to expand the mold as the bail is raised. Y
It is understood that each ot' the ll shaped end pieces may be a single piece or may be there being a space plate l5 between the an- `gle irons terminating below the 'top of 'the mold to form the notches ll` between vthe angle irons; andthe 'div/erging wing` 1G being also suitably fixed to the angle irons.
lV e claim: l. A concrete mold comprising,- side walls converging toward the ends ot' the mold;
end walls cooper-ating' therewith and having.
wings diverging` from the ends of the mold; and nieansoperable to move the walls toward and from each other to open and close the mold.
2. A concretemold comprising side walls converging` toward the ends of the mold; end walls cooperating therewith and having1 wings divergjing` from the ends of the mold;`
and means comprising a handle and operable to move the walls toward and from each other to expand and contract the mold and adapted for use in lifting` the mold when eX- panded.
3. A mold comprising` side and end walls, a bail pivotally connected to the side walls; said bail movable out ot mold lifting positionj and means whereby said bail moves the side and end walls when actuated to mold lifting position.
l. A mold comprising side and end walls, resilient bail movable out ot mold lifting position, and means whereby said bail moves the-'side and end walls outwardly -when actuated to mold lifting position.
5. A mold comprising,` side and end walls, al resilient bail pivotally connected to the side walls, and rods pivotally connecting said bail with the endxwalls, said bail and rods adapted when actuated to move the side and end walls toward or away from the center of the mold.
6. A. mold comprising side and end walls, a sliding' connection between the side and end walls. a resilient bail pivotally connected to the side walls, pairs of rods pivotally connecting `said bail with the end wallssaid bail and rods adapted when actuated, to move the side and end'walls toward or'away from the center of the mold.
*7. A. mold comprisingside and end walls, a sliding connection between the side and end walls, a plate separating the mold into compartments, a resilient bail pivotally connected to the side walls, pairs of rods pivotally connecting said bail with the end walls, said bail and rods adapted when actuated to move the side and end walls toward or away from the center ot. the mold. f
8.v A mold comprising side and end walls, a sliding connection between the side and end walls, a plate separating the mold into compartments extensions on said plate that extend through notches in the end walls, a resilient bailrpivotally connected to the side walls, pairs of rods pivotally connecting' said bail with the end walls, said bail and rods adapted when yactuated to move the side'and end walls toward or away from the center ot the mold.
.ln testimony whereof, we have hereunto setoui" hands at lios Angeles, California, this 26th day ot August,' 1920.
