To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that T, DAVID SHAPIRO, a citizen of the United States, residing at 851 East 163rd street, in the county of Bronx, city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Cigarette and Cigar Dispenser and Container, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a container and dispenser for cigarettes, cigars and similar objects.

One of the objects of this invention is to provide a novelty container and dispenser from which cigarettes, etc, may be dispensed one at time in such a manner as to attract attention and produce a pleasing effect.

Another object of the invention is to produce a device that may be operated by the pressure of a button or thumb-piece, so as to dispense the objects at the pleasure of the user. Cther objects and advantages of the invention will be obvious as the description proceeds.

The invention will be clearly understood from the description in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side view of the device with the cover removed.

Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, partly broken away showing the parts in a different position.

Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view taken along the line A A of Fig. 1.

In the drawings, reference character 1 designates a flat plate or base upon which the device is mounted. Upstanding side pieces 2 and 3 are attached to the base 1 by means of screws 4 and 5 that pass through lugs on the side pieces 2 and 3. Mounted between the side pieces is an open-ended container 6, having a sloping bottom 7 which bottom is bent and attached to the edge of the base 1 as shown at 8. The container 6 is provided with a cover having a depending flange 9 for a purpose to be described below.

Near the upper ends of side pieces 2 and 3 is mounted a shaft 10 having a bent portion 10' extending outside of the side piece 3. The shaft 10 is provided with a projection 11 rigidly attached to said shaft so as to turn therewith. One end 12" of a spring 12 is attached to the lug 11 and the other end 12 of said spring is fastened to the side piece 2, and the spring is so tensioned as to tend to rotate the shaft 10 in the clock-wise direction as seen in Fig. 1. the lug 11 a figure 13 to simulate the appearance of an eagle having wings pivoted or attached at 1%. The eagle 13 is provided with a beak 15 that is hinged at 17 and is normally pressed in a closed position by means of a spring 18. The beak 15 is also provided with grooved portion 16 to facilitate grasping an object.

An elevating frame consisting of side pieces 19 and 20 and a front piece or crossbar 21 is pivoted to the side members 2 and 3 at 23 and 24 respectively. This elevating frame is provided with flat forwardly proj ecting portions 22 having upwardly inclined portions 22. The side 20 extends beyond the pivot 24: thus providing an arm 25 which can be operated by the rod 30. There is also pivoted at 27 a lever having an arm 26 and also having an arm 28 that can be operated by the rod 30. The object of the lever 26 is to provide means for opening a door in the casing (not shown), when the eagle swoops down to pick up the cigarette or other object from the elevating frame 22.

A rod 30 moving in guides 31 and 32 on the side member 3 is provided with a thumbpiece 34 and is also provided with a lug 33 which contacts with the bent portion 10 of the shaft 10. The lower end of the rod 30 contacts with the arms 25 and 28 so as to turn them about the pivots 24 and 27 respectively.

The operation is as follows: A number of cigarettes are inserted in the container 6 and lie parallel to each .other as shown at 0. These cigarettes roll down the inclined bottom 7 until one ofthe cigarettes lies upon the flange 22 and the next one is just inside the flange 9 of the casing 6. Thereupon, the operator presses the thumb-piece 34, thereby causing the arm 26 to open a door of the casing (not shown) and also causing the elevating frame 1920 to lift the cigarette and separate the same from the following ones as more clearly shown in Fig. 2. At the same time the lug 33 on the rod 30 by contacting with the arm 10 of the shaft 10 turns this shaft and causes the eagle to swoop down and the spring pressed beak 15 catches the cigarette in the notch 16. When the operator ceases pressing upon the thumbpiece 34:, the spring 12 returns the parts to their normal position as shown in Fig. 1 and a succeeding cigarette rolls down against the ledge 22' and is ready to be picked up by a similar operation.

While the invention has been particularly described With respect to dispensing cigarettes, it is obvious that the invention is also applicable to the dispensing of other similar shapedt articles such as cigars, sticks of candy, rolls ofchewing gum, etc.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

In a device of the class described, a cigarette container, means for removing one cigarette at a time from said container, said means comprising a pivoted frame having a flat cigarette carrying projection, said frame carrying a bar to operate as'a stop for a cigarette When said frame is in its operated 15 position. a
