Description

F. TRUMP.
` Stocks for Mill-Sinne Picks.
No.137,979, 4 Y PatentedApri|15,1873.
Y l' WM( V56 lJ'NrrEn STATES PATENT @Finca FULLER TRUMP, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOCKS FOR MlLLSTQNE-PiCKS.
Specification forming` part of Letters Patent No. 3?,9V79, dated April 8, 1873; application filed March 8, 1873.
To all whom4 it may concern:
Be it known that I, FULLER TRUMP, of Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stocks for Picks for Dressing Millstones and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the anneXed drawing making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspectiveview, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section.
The same letters are employed in both the gures in the designation of identical parts.
My invention relates to the stocks for carrying picks used in dressing millstones, and my improvement is intended to facilitate the removal and replacement of the pick, and consists in forming a gripe to hold the pick by means of a sliding plate with inclined bearings, so contrived that the impact of the pick against the stone shall tend to tighten the gripe by which it isheld in the stock; the momentum imparting force to this gripe is that due to the weight of the heavy head of the stock, and not merely the momentum of the handle as in other picks of this class in which the wedges which clamp the pick are inserted in a hole mortised in the head of the handle.
In the annexed drawing, A is a wooden handle inserted into a socket cast with the fixed partB of the stock. This is formed with iianges on each side forming a recess to receive the blade of the pick, fitting neatly between the dan ges, and bearing against a smooth surface at the bottom of the recess. On the a-nges are four lugs, B', extending at right angles to the planes ofthe anges, and beveled on their lower faces, which are smooth, as shown in the drawing. A movable piece, O, is placed within the recesses formed in the stock between the flanges and under the overhanging lugs B. This is smooth upon its lower face where it bears against the face of the pick D, and has a projection at C extending over the end of the pick which bears against said projection. On top of the piece B there are beveled and smooth surfaces corresponding with the beveled surfaces under the lugs Bf.. The bit of the pick D isinserted, as clearly shown, in the chamber formed between the parts B and C of the stock bearing against the projection O', by means of which all the force that is applied on the edge of the pick tends to force the part O back, pressing theinclined faces against one another, and firmly locking the bit in the stock. When it is desired to remove the pick it is readily loosened by striking upon the proj ection C by which the piece C will be driven toward the point of the pick, and the inclined surfaces freed so that the bit will fall out.
I am aware that wedges have been used for securing the bits in the handles, and I do not therefore claim broadly the use of inclined surfaces for securing the bit but What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A stock for securing the bit of a mill pick consisting .of a part, B, fixed to the handle, and a sliding part, O, bearing against the other face ofthe bit, said parts being respectively fitted with opposed inclined surfaces by which the parts are held in position griping the bit, substantially in the manner set forth.
2. The sliding piece C constructed with a projection, C', to embrace the end of the bit, used in combination with the part B lixed to the handle; said parts being respectively formed with opposed inclined faces so as to compress the bit with a pressure due to the momentum of thehandle and partB attached thereto, substantially as set forth.
3. The part B constructed with a recess to receive the bit on the surface at the bottom of the recess, and with overhanging lugs in combination with the movable part pressing the bit against the base of the recess by the action of opposed inclined surfaces, substantially in the manner set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
