  • My invention relates to stamp afi iners and has for its object to provide such a machine with a printing device adapted to print on a stamp, label or other article, simultaneously with the operation of aflining the same. Another object of my invention is provide a device for canceling a stamp simultaneously with the operation of afiixing the same. A still further object of my invention is to provide improved means for applying moisture to the surface upon which the stamp is atfixed. To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features be ing pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.

Be it known that T, VVHLIAI'J F. Sonwnrour, a citizen of the United Eitates, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stamp- Aiiixers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numeral marked thereon.
My invention relates to stamp afi iners and has for its object to provide such a machine with a printing device adapted to print on a stamp, label or other article, simultaneously with the operation of aflining the same. Another object of my invention is provide a device for canceling a stamp simultaneously with the operation of afiixing the same. A still further object of my invention is to provide improved means for applying moisture to the surface upon which the stamp is atfixed. To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features be ing pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.

i have shown my invention applied to a commercial. form of stamp aflixing machine, which comprises a frame or housing I mounted on a base 2, having a central aperture 3, in alinement with which is mounted a vertical reciprocating shaft or plunger 4, 1 "ovided at its upper end with an operating l-mob or handle 5 and provided at its lower end with an affixing head 6 in which are carried one or more type blocks 7 At one side of the plunger i is mounted a stamp receptacle 8 and guideway comprising a vertically Xtending guide wall 9, the lower end of which is curved laterally as at 10 to guide d dischai e the stamp strip 11 into the path of the afiining head of the plunger 6 as it approaches the limit of its downward movement.
The plunger l is rectangular in cross section and is surrounded by a carriage 12, by which the stamp feeding fingers 13 are carried. The carriage is connected to the plunger to be moved thereby by means of a steel ball mounted in an aperture or recess in the plunger and forced outwardly by means of an expansion coiled spring 14: interposed between the ball and the bottom of the recess. The projecting portion of the ball is adapted to cooperate with the edge of an aperture or recess 1.5 provided therefor in the carriage. The upper end of the carriage is offset slightly and forms a projection 16 which extends through an aperture provided therefor in the top of the casing where it may be engaged by a suitable instrument to retain the carriage while the plunger is moved downy when it may be locked in an inoperative position by means of a locking bolt 17 en the carriage which is adapted to cooperate with a recess 18 in the plunger to reain it depressed with th head 6 within the recess 3 of the base.
The feeding lingers 13 comprise a plurality of thin steel bars pivoted on a rod 19 mounted in a pair of ears 20 projecting from the carriage and adapted to engage the pertorations between the successivestamps of the strip durlng the feeding movement. The
fingers are yieldingly held in engagement with the strip of stamps by means of sprlng fingers 21 secured by screws to a member connecting the ears 20. I
The means for cutting or severing the stamps comprises the stationary edge of the slot 22 formed in the plate 23 secured to the frame of the machine and through 'which the end of the stamp strip is disthrown into cooperative position by means of'the cam members 27 on the plate com ing into engagement with the extensions 28 on the plate 23. The plate 25 is slidably and pivotally mounted on the plunger and held in normal position by means of a coiled spring 29 interposed between the plate and plunger. In order to prevent wear of the edge of the knife, the free end of the arms by which it is pivoted to the plunger, are connected to the ends of contractile coiled springs 30, which return the plunger to normal position after operation.
Clamping means are provided for preventing Withdrawal of the stamp strip by r'oree applied to its free end. Said clamping means comprises a plate 31 slotted to accom modate the ends of the feeding fingers 153 and having its lower end curved to correspond to the curvature of the guide plate 10 to deflect the stamp strip as it is fed forwardly. At its upper end the plate is bent to form the angular portion 32 where its clamping action occurs when its lower end is moved from the guide 10. The clamping plate is provided with cars 33, in which is mounted a U-shaped member 34having laterally turned ends extending through slots 34 in lateral flanges 34" on the plate. which ends have fixed hearings in the frame of the machine. The clamp is yieldingly held in contact with the guide 10 by means of a coil spring 35 mounted on a T-lug 36 formed on the flange of the plate 31 and having one end secured beneath the lug 37 and the other end provided with an eye 38 wrapped around the adjacent laterally turned end of the U-shaped member 34. As
the plate istilted outwardly at its lower end and exerts clamping pressure at 32 at its upper end, the movement is yieldingly regist-ed by the springs 35 which press upon it at 36, both ends of the spring being fixed while the slots 34" permit rocking movement of the plate about 32 as a fulcrum. In the same way, the springs return the plate and normally hold it yieldingly against the guide.
On the other side of the plunger are provided my improved means for moistening the surface to which the stamp is athxed and associated devices for applying ink to the printing devices 7 already referred to. The inking devices comprise a reservoir or chamber 40 mounted on trunnions 41 and 42 having hearings in blocks and 44 secured to the casing. Oneoi the trunnions 41 has a tapped opening therethrough registering with an opening in the casing, and
through which the reservoir may be filled] hen in use the opening is closed by means of ashouldered screw 45 which. takes in the tapped opening in the trunnion. ,Normally the reservoir occupies the position shown in Fig. 4 and has an enlarged part 40 near-the top of which is an inwardly extending oilset portion 40", which lies beneath the types 7 and has an aperture in its upper wall, in which is secured a pad 46 of fibrous material such as felt, sponge or the like, in contact with the types. The ink in the reservoir saturates the pad which applies it to the printing types. lieans are provided for swinging the ink reservoir on its trunnions out of the path of the plunger when the latter is actuated to afiix a stamp. Said means comprises, in the present instance, a roller or wheel 47 revolubly mounted in the ends of a pair of arms 48 pivotally mounted on a pin 49 secured in the stamp affixing head. The roller 47 normally bears on the top of the reservoir 40 near its outer edge where the top is slightly elevated and is resiliently held in contact therewith by means of a spring 50 coiled about the pin 49 and. hearing at one end against tl e. pin on which the roller 4'7 is mounted and having its other end anchored on a screw tapped in the plunger. When the plunger is depressed, the roller rides along the upper surface of the ink reservoir which swings on its pivots from the position shown in Fig. 4, first to that shown in F 6 and finally to that shown in Fig. 5, in which the reservoir has swung completely out of the path of the plunger and its top has moved to a substantially vertical position, while the arms in which the roller is carried have moved from a substantially horizontal position shown. in Fig. 4 to a substantially vertical position shown in 5. lVhen the plunger is returned by the action of its spring, the roller moves back along the side of the reservoir and by the action of its spring 50 swings the reservoir back to its normal horizontal position shown in Fig. 4.
Means are provided for moistening the surface to which the stamp is afiixed during the initial movements of the ink reservoir. To this end a water reservoir or chamber 52 is so positioned in the side of the casing that the ink reservoir 40 is pivoted between it and the plunger. The reservoir 52 comprises an upright part 52 and an enlarged bottom portion 52, which extends beneath the ink reservoir into the recess3 to a point adjacentthe path of the plunger and has a bot tom portion 53 secured to the base of the casing. Near the base of the part of the reservoir 52*, the wall is provided with a plurality of orifices or apertures 59L, three being shown in the drawings, through which moistening liquid may be expelled from the reservoir upon the surface immediately beneath the plunger, and to which the stamp is applied. For the purpose of filling the reservoir or for replenishing the liquid when exhausted, the outside wall of the casing is provided with a tapped opening leading to the reservoir which may be closed by means of a shouldered screw 55, having a knurled head, by which it may be readily removed. The orifices 54: are comparatively small and means are provided to forcibly eject the water or other moistening liquid there through. Said means comprises an ejector 56, the lower or free end of which consists of a plurality of spaced fingers 57, which may be provided with any suitable yield-able material such as rubber or the like. Normally the ejector occupies the position shown in Fig. i, in which the fingers are yieldingly held in position to close the orifices. The orifices or apertures 5a are of small capillary diameter to prevent the free escape of the liquid therethrough when open, although it will be understood a reduction of pressure will be produced within the reservoir after each ejection of liquid therefrom, and that the atmospheric pressure on the outside will be sufficient to prevent the free escape of the liquid, except when the ejector is being operated. The ejector is pivotally mounted on a rod or pin 58 extending through the reservoir 52 and supported in a pair of inwardly projecting lugs 59 and 59. The rod is in the form of a screw, having threads engaging the lug 59. A sleeve 60 is mounted on the pin 58 and extends through ears 61 formed on the ejector and into the lugs and 59. The ejector is angular or L-shaped, the angular portion extending in a early horizontal plane from a point near its pivotal support when in position to close the orifices 54-. N ear the extremity of the angu lar portion. the ejector is provided with an elongated opening 62 adapted to receive a T-head 63 on an actuator 64 for the ejector. The actuator 64: is in the form of bolt or pin and extends through an opening in the top of the reservoir in which it has an axial sliding movement. At its upper end head by means of a pin the actuator is provided with an enlarged head 65 which limits its downward move ment. Mounted on the pin 64 adjacent the inner upper Wall of the reservoir is a gasket 66, which serves to seal the opening around the bolt. The gasket is resiliently held in position by means of a washer 6? against which one end of a spring 68 bears. The spring is coiled about the bolt 64: and at its other end bears against the angular portion of the ejector and normally holds it in the position shown in Fig. l, in which the fingers close the apertures 5a. The head is bifurcated at its upper end to receive the enlarged horizontal end 70 of a bent arm or lever 71, the other arm 72 of the lever is bent vertically downwardly and at its lower and normally contacts the outer wall of the ink reservoir L0 or a plate 73 secured thereto as shown in Fig. at. The lever 71 is pivoted to the head by means of a pivot screw and has a recess in its lower face to receive one end of an expansion coil spring 7%, the other end of which engages the bottom of the slot in the head 65 and tends to yieldingly hold the lever with its outer shoulder in contact with the bottom of the slot and the arm 7 2 in engagement with the ink reservoir. The plate 73 is secured to the outer wall of the ink reservoir and projects above said wall, where it is curved outwardly and upwardly to engage the roller a7 and prevent the reservoir from moving past the roller when the plunger is operated. The projecting portion of the plate 73 is slotted orbifurcated and the arm 7 2 of the actuating lever normally lies within this slot. .011 its outer wall, the ink reservoir 40 is provided with an actuating lug or projection '75 which normally lies below the end of the arm 71, which it is adapted to engage when the ink reservoir swings to the position shown in Fig. 6, "o raise the bolt 6-1 against the tension oi? the spring 68 to swing the ejector on its pivot to open the orifices As the plunger is advanced and the parts approach the position shown in Fig. 5, the lug 75 is disengaged from the arm 72 and the spring its forces the fingers of the ejector against the openings 5%, and in so doing, ejects a quantity of the moistening iquid upon the sun face adapted to receive the stamp in advance thereof.
'lhe printing types 7 are provided. with shanlrs 7 which extend through an elongated slot 76 in a plate 77 secured to the 78, which extends through the plunger 1} and a pair of ears 79 bent up from the ends of the plate. At one end the slot 76 is enlarged as at 76 and said enlarged portion has an extension 76*, as clearly shown in Fig. 11. The types have enlarged heads 7, which are inserted through the openings 76 and engage the rear side of the plate H, as the types are moved along the slot. WVhen the desired types have been arranged in the slot, they are secured in position therein by means of an arm 79 pivoted on a stud or pin 80 secured in the plate 77. The arm 79 has a shoulder or extension 81 adapted to engage the heads 7 of the types, and a finger-piece for artuatiug it projects through the slot 76". The member 79 is frictionally held in actuated position by its pivot which holds it closely in contact with the plate 77. The head 6 is cut away to form a recess 80 adja cent to the plate '77 to accommodate the ,arm 79 and its pivot.
Normally, the parts are in the position shown, in Fig. a. When the plunger is pushed downwardly, the feeding fingers 13 enter the slots in the pl ate 31 and engage the perforations in the stamp strip to feed itforwardly, until the ears 20 come into contact with the plate 23, and when the stamp at the end of the strip has been advanced through the opening 2:2, the forward movement of thc fingers is then arrested. The severing member 26 has also moved to the position shown in Fig. 5, in which it is adapted to cooperate withthe member 23 to shear off the advanced stamp as the plunger advances. During this movement the ink reservoir swings on its trunnions first to the position shown in Fig. 6, in which the inking pad 4,6 has moved from contact with the types and its outer end away from the arm or lever 71, and the lug 75 has come into contact with the end thereof to swing the ejector fingers 57 away from the orifices 5i. As the plunger is advanced to the position shown in Fig. 5, the lug 75 rides past the arm 71, and the spring 68 forces the fingers a 'ai nst the orifices 5 1 through which a spray or the moistening liquid is ejected upon the surface adapted to receive the stamp about to be severed and forced into contact therewith by the head of the plunger. As the plunger advances. the severed stamp is engaged thereby and pressed into contact with the moistening surface. Simultaneously, the printing type carried by the head impresses the stamp to print thereon.
My invention has been found very useful in cases where it is desirable to cancel the stamp immediately after affixing the same,
such as internal revenue, documentary war tax stamps, and the like, where it is desirable to print the date of cancellation on the stamp. It will be understood, however. that it may be used in any place where it is desirable to print upon the stamp simultaneously with the operation of affixing the same. By removing the typesfrom the plunger head, the device can be used as a mere stamp afiixer, as the stamps afiixed at that time would not be printed. At 82 is shown an indicator which counts the stamps as they are affixed and indicates the number used.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a stamp affiXer, the combination of a casing, a plunger adapted to reciprocate therein, means actuated by the plunger for feeding a stamp, means for pressing the stamp on a surface adapted to receive the same, a plurality of printing types on the plunger adapted to print on the stamp, means for inking said types, and devices controlled by said inkin means for moisten-.

2.' In a stamp aflixer, the combination of a casing, a plunger adapted to reciprocate therein, means actuated by the plunger for feeding a stamp, means for pressing the stamp on a surface adapted to receive the same, a plurality of printing types on the plunger adapted to print on the stamp, an inking pad movable into and out of the path of the plunger for inking the types, a pivoted member on which the pad is carried, and devices controlled by said pivoted member for moistening said surface.
3. In a stamp aflixer, the combination of a casing, a plunger adapted to reciprocate therein, means actuated by the plunger for feeding a. stamp, means for pressing'the stamp on a surface adapted to receive the same, a plurality of printing types on the plunger adapted to print on the stamp, an inking pad for inking the types, a pivoted member in which said pad is mounted, means on the plunger for moving said pivoted member to swing the pad out of and into the path of the types, and devices controlled by said pivoted member for moistening said surface.

5. In a stamp aflixer, the combination with means for pressing a stamp upon the receiving surface and a stamp printing element associated therewith, of a movable inking device for the printing element actuated by the pressing means, and a moistening device actuated by the inking device. V

I11 a stamp'aflixer, the combination with means for pressing a stamp upon the receiving surface and a stamp printing element associated therewith, of a displaceable inkingdevice for the printing element actuated to inoperative position by the pressing means but normally cooperating with the printing element and a moistening device actuated by the inking device.
7. In a stamp aflixer, the combination of a casing, a plunger adapted to reciprocate therein, means actuated by the plunger for feeding a stamp, means for pressing the stamp on a surface adapted to receive the same, a plurality of printing types on the plunger for printing on the stamp, an inking pad, and an arm on the plunger adapted to swing said pad into and out of contact with the types.
8. In a stamp afiiXer, the combination of a casing, a plunger adapted to reciprocate therein, means actuated by the plunger for feeding a stamp, means for pressing the stamp on a surface adapted to receive the same, a plurality of printing types on the plunger, an inking pad, an arm pivoted to the plunger, and a roller on the arm adapted to swing the pad into and out of contact with the types.
9. In a stamp afiixer, the combination of a casing, a plunger adapted to reciprocate therein, means actuated by the plunger for feeding a stamp, means for pressing the stamp on a surface adapted to receive the same, a plurality of printing types, a swinging reservoir, and an arm on the plunger for swinging the reservoir into and out of the path of the plunger.
10. In a stamp afixer, the combination of a casing, a plunger adapted to reciprocate therein, means actuated by the plunger for feeding a stamp, means for pressing the stamp on a surface adapted to receive the same, a plurality of printing types, a swinging reservoir, an arm pivoted to the plunger, and a roller onthe arm adapted to roll on a wall of the reservoir to swing it into and out of the path of the plunger.
11. In a stamp affixer, the combination of a casing, a plunger adapted to reciprocate therein, means actuated by the plunger for feeding a stamp, means for pressing the stamp on a surface adapted to receive the same, a plurality of types on said plunger, a swinging reservoir, an arm pivoted to the plunger, a roller on the arm, and a spring for pressing the roller into contact with a wall of the reservoir to swing the reservoir when the plunger is actuated.
12. In a stamp afiixer, the combination of a plunger, means actuated by the plunger for affixing a stamp, a slotted plate on the plunger, and means for securing a plurality of types in said slot to print on the stamp during the aflixing operation.
13. In a stamp aflixer, the combination of a plunger, means actuated by the plunger for afiixing a stamp, a slotted plate on the plunger, and an arm for retaining a plurality of types in said plate to print on the stamp during the affixing operation.

17. In a stamp afliXer, the combination of a frame, means for feeding and pressing a stamp on a surface adapted to receive the same, printing devices including a swinging reservoir, a fixed reservoir, and means controlled by the swinging reservoir for spraying liquid from the fixed reservoir on said surface in advance of pressing the stamp into contact therewith.
18. In a stamp aflixer, the combination of a frame, means for feeding and pressing a stamp on a surface adapted to receive the same, printing devices including a swinging reservoir, a fixed reservoir, an ejector therein and means controlled by the swinging reservoir for actuating said ejector to spray a moistening liquid on said surface in advance of pressing the stamp into contact therewith.
19. In a stamp afiixer, the combination of a frame, means for feeding and pressing a stamp on a surface adapted to receive the same, printing devices including aswinging reservoir, a fixed reservoir having an orifice, an ejector in said fixed reservoir, and means controlled by said swinging reservoir for actuating said ejector to spray liquid through said orifice.
20. In a. stamp afiixer, the combination of a frame, means for feeding and pressing a stamp on a surface adapted to receive the same, printing devices including a swinging reservoir, a fixed reservoir having an orifice, an ejector in said fixed reservoir, means on said ejector normally adapted to close said orifice, and means controlled by said swinging reservoir for actuating said ejector to spray liquid through said. orifice.
21. In a stamp aflixer, the combination of a frame, means for feeding and pressing a stamp on a surface adapted to receive the same, printing devices including a swinging reservoir, a fixed reservoir having an orifice, an ejector adapted to swing in said fixed reservoir, means on said ejector for normally closing said orifice, and means controlled by said swinging reservoir for swinging said ejector to spray liquid through said orifice.
22. In a stamp aflixer, the combination of a frame, means for feeding and pressing a stamp on a surface adapted to receive the same, printing devices including a swinging reservoir, a fixed reservoir having an orifice, an ejector adapted to swing in said and means controlled thereb for sara ins y Q liquid on said surface.

26.- In a stamp afiixer, the combination of a plunger, means actuated thereby for feeding and severing a stamp, means on the plunger for pressing a stamp into contact with a surface adapted to receive the same,- printing devices actuated by said plunger and; comprising a movable ink reservoir, a projection on said reservoir, and devices adapted to be actuated by said projection 'for spraying liquid on said surface.
27. In a stamp afiixer, the combination of a reservoir for containing a moistening liquid, and having an outlet orifice, an ejector pivoted in said reservoir, a spring normally maintaining said ejector in position to close saidorifice, a pivoted member for actuating said ejector, a plunger, and a swinging member controlled by the plunger for operating said pivoted member.
28. In a stamp afiixer,the combination of a casing, a reservoir in said casing for containing a moistening liquid and having an outlet orifice, an ejector pivoted in said reservoir, means normally maintaining said ejector in position to close said orifice, a member pivoted in said casing for controlling said ejector, a plunger, an arm pivoted on said plunger for swinging said member and actuating connections between the latter and the ejector.
29. In a stamp afiixer, the combination of a plunger, stamp aflixing means actuated thereby, printing types on said plunger, a movable reservoir for inking said types, a fixed reservoir having an aperture, an ejector pivoted in said fixed reservoir, an actuator therefor, and means on said movable reservoir for operating said actuator.

In a stamp aifixer, the combination of a plunger, printing types on said plunger, stamp aflixing means actuated thereby, a movable reservoir for inking said types, a fixed reservoir having an aperture, an ejector pivoted in said fixed reservoir, an actuator therefor, an arm pivoted on said actuator, and means on said movable reservoir adapted to cooperate with said arm to operate said actuator.
81. In a stamp aflixer, the combination of a plunger, printing types on said 'alunger, stamp aliixing means actuated thereby, a movable reservoir for inking said types, a fixed reservoir having an aperture, an ejector pivoted in said fixed reservoir, an actuator therefor,-an arm pivoted on said actuator, a spring between said arm and said actuator, and a projection on said movable reservoir adapted to cooperate with said arm to operate said actuator when the reservoir moves in one di'rectionand to move the arm from its path without operating the actuator when the reservoir moves in another direction. In a stamp afiixer, the combination of a plunger, printing types on said plunger, stamp afiixing means actuated thereby, a movable reservoir for inking said types, a fixed reservoir having anaperture, an ejec torpivoted in said fixed reservoir, an actuator therefor, a spring normally pressing said ejector over said aperture, an arm pivoted on said actuator, a projection on said movable reservoir adapted to cooperate with said arm to operate said actuator, and an arm pivoted on the plunger for moving'said ink reservoir when the plunger is depressed.

In a stamp afiixenthe combination with a casing, a plunger operating therein to press a stamp upon the receiving surface, a. stamp printing element associated with the plunger, stamp feeding mechanism located on one side of the plunger and actuated thereby and a'stamp moistening device and aninking device for the printing element located on the opposite side of the plunger and actuated thereby, each of said devices embodying a reservoir'adapted to be filledfrom the exterior of the casing. ,7
