3 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

. PLIERS.
To aZZfw kom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KSERTY SHANnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washburn, in the county of Aroostook and Stateof Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pliers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pliers having novel means for gripping and cutting wire.
Briefly stated, this invention comprises a pair of pliers especially adapted for use by electricians and having extremely simple means for gripping and cutting wire thereby dispensing with the necessity of employing separate tools for each operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pair of pliers having gripping jaws extending in the plane of the handles and approximately at right angles to the handles so that as the jaws are brought together the article engaged between the same will be securely gripped.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pair of pliers having their jaws provided on opposed sides with cutting blades adapted for severing wire.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pair of pliers which are desirable in use, neat in appearance and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective of a pair of pliers embodying the invention,
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevation of the same,
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 10 designates a pair of pliers having handles 11 and 12 which are adapted to be gripped in the usual manner for operating jaws 13 and 14 formed integral therewith. The rear portion of the jaw 14 is recessed, as indicated at 15, and the rear portion of the jaw 13 is recessed, as indicated at 16, so that the jaws are disposed in the same plane when connected by the pivot element 17 The jaws Specification of-Letters Patent. PatentedMfiy 24, 1921. Application med February 19, 1920. Serial no. 359,821. I
13 and are provided at points spaced inwardly from their forward ends with beveled portions 17 and 18 which form coacting cutting edges adapted to be operated in a scissors-like manner for severing a piece of wire or the like. The cutting-blade formed on the jaw 14 is provided with a triangular notch 19 which serves to limit the forward movement of the wire as the cutting blade of the jaw 13 is brought into engagement with the same.
As illustrated particularlyin Fig. 1 the jaw 14 is L-shaped so as to form a contact surface or face 21 which coacts with the forward end of the jaw 13. The jaw 13 has its forward end provided with teeth 22 which are adapted to securely grip the wire or the like confined between the jaws 13 and 14. It will be noted that the contact face of the jaw 13 does not move toward and from the contact face 21 of the jaw 14 in substantially parallel relation, but transversely and diagonally from the jaw 14. That is to say, the jaw 13 approaches the jaw 14 at an angle so that a wedging action is had upon the wire or the like gripped between the jaws. The wire upon being arranged between the jaws rests upon a shoulder 25 formed inwardly of the contact face of the jaw 14 and is thereby prevented from being moved out of contact with the jaws as the latter are brought together.
The upper longitudinal edge portion of the jaw 13 is formed with a laterally projecting shoulder 26 which terminates flush with the forward end of the jaw and overhangs the shoulder 25. The forward end of the laterally projecting shoulder 26 has one edge flush with one side of the jaw 14 so as to permit the pliers to be carried in ones pocket without the possibility of tearing the same.
In the use of the invention, the jaws may be employed for effectively gripping wire and when desired wire may be out by placing the same between the cutting blades and subsequently drawing the handles together.
A tool constructed in accordance with this invention may also be used as a hammer since one side of the jaw 14 is entirely fiat and serves as a good hammer head for driving tacks and the like.
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred embodiment of the same and that such minor changes in con- Having thus described the invention, what i is claimed as new is: A tool consisting of two pivotally con nected members, the portions of the members at one side of the pivot forming handles and the portions at opposite sides of the pivot forming cooperating jaws, the jaws being reduced longitudinally on their opposed edges at opposite sides whereby they may to form cooperating cutters, one of the cutters being provided in its cutting edge with a notch to receive work and to resist movement of the same outward between the jaws and being further provided outwardly beyond said notch with a work supporting shoulder disposed in a plane parallel to the longitudinal axis of one of the jaws.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
