P. R. GONSKY.
coNTAxNER FOB NEwAND msCAHDED ARTICLES.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.)
PETER It. GC'NSKY, OF CHICAGQ, ILLINOIS.
CONTAINER FOR NEW AND .DISCARDED ARTICLES.
i ,scenes Application filed March 3,
T 0 all w hom z' may concern:
Be it known that i. ln'rnn il. GoNsiii, a lsubjectV oitlie lling ot' England, residing at Chicago, in the county ot vCook and State of Illinois, have invented. certainiicw and useful Improvements in Containers for New and Discarded Articles, oi which the following is a speciiication.
rllhe invention has for an object to effect improvements in receptacles` or containers of new and discarded articles, suoli as the points or needles for use upon gramophones and graphophones and particularly aims to economize the use of materials and space in providing such ail-appliance. It is a particular aim to enable the space ordinarily occupied by one receptacle for needles to be used both for holding new needles, and for receiving and concealing used needles in such manner that the two may not become mixed or the used needles obtained except by volition. It is also an aim to make it possible to dispose of used needles at a point convenient to the container of new needles, so that a minimum oi delay or annoyance will be involved in putting used needles in a separate receptacle from that in which the new needles are contained.
It is also an aim of the invention toenable the economical production of an appliance for attaining the ends in view; as well as to enable the ready manipulation of the device for cleaning` or emptying.
The invention involves also additional objects, advantages, and features oi invention, in the structural form, relation and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and shown in the drawings, wherein,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view oiE a stand device upon which one embodiment of my inventionvis incorporated, y
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the combined container,
Fig. 3 is a top view thereof,
Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the upper member.
Fig. 5 is a view partly in section showing the adaptability ot the device to use in table elements or top portions of cabinets', and like situations.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged view oi the coengaged edge portions of the upper and lower members of the device.
There is illustrated a combined receptacle or container for new and used phono graphic needles or the like, comprising a Specification of Letters Patent.
1920.l seriai No. 362,949.
bottom receptacle member or cup 10 which has heretofore been produced by stamping a disk of suitable metal to the desired form between properly shaped dies, the receptacle being circular in torni and having itsL edge portion formed in the usual manner` with a rolled rim', which I subsequently `further work by a spinning operation so as to press the outer part Vdownwardly and form a truste-conical surface 13, forming an acute angle with the inner wall surface 14 of the cup. vThen made i'or use for holding phonograph needles, the bottom member 10 has been made one inch and a half in diameter, and about (seven-eighths) of an inch deep, its bottom portion being nearly or quite fiat in some cases, although this may be varied if desired.
Removably engaged uponA the bottom member 10 there is a top and receptacle element 15, similar in shape in its body part, but smaller in diameter and in depth, the receptacle part proper being ordinarily formed one and one-eighth inches in diameter and one-half an inch in depth. It is provided with a planiform horizontal flange portion 1G, circumscribing the receptacle, and having a down-turned' outer edge portion or flange 17 adapted to lit loosely over the larger part of the rim 12, and to extend a short distance below this rim as shown in Fig. 6. At one or more places, the flange portion 17 is slightly crimped or indented on its lower edge portion, as shown at 18 in Fig. 6, so that the immediately adj acent part of the iiange inclines inwardly toward its lower edge, and is adapted to engage resiliently yunder the riml to yieldably resist separation of the two parts oi the device when assembled. Arcuate slots 19 concentric with the vertical axis of the device are formed in the top flange 16, so as to fall over the annular space 2O between the walls of the two members when coengaged properly.
The top member is adapted to be pressed upon the bottom member so that the crimp 18 will slide upon the inclined surface 13 springing the metal so that the crimp may Patented May 244, Y1921.
being located'side by side or in a series, as shown in Fig. 5. I have also mounted the device in a swinging Wire bracket as illustrated at 22 in Fig. l, so mounted that it may swing under a leg or other part of an article, the outer end of the arm being bent to form a hook or eye adapted to snugly en-` gage around the lower receptacle 10, and so hold it that it may be readily lifted from the arm when desired. Or, the supporting bracket may be permanently fixed in the lower receptacle l0 as indicated at 22 in Fig. 2.
Ihat is claimed:
As an improved article of manufacture, a
therein, and being formed also with a nee- 20 dle receiving slot therethrough immediately Without and adjacent the receptacle part for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have aiixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
