PATENT OFFICE.
i. FREDERICK H. LANG; OF GGLUMBUS, OHIO.
xnans'ronnxwmsnlsnms mans nv vnssnLs.
To all whom t may concern.'
- Be it known that I, FREDERICKv LANs,
a citizen of the .United States, residing at g Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented 4a certain new and useful Improvement in Means for Eittinguishing Fires in Vessels, of which the" following is a specification.
Thls lnventlon relates to means for extinguishing fire in gasolen'e washer chamfor considerable periods of time thereby exposing the gasolene to the danger of ignition.
The object of the invention generally is to provide improved means for automatically and promptly closing the cover' of the chamber in the event of ignition and particularly to provide means whereby the normal operation of the cover in opening and closing the same shall not involve the -operation of other parts.
The invention is embodied in the example herein shown and described, the features of novelty being finally claimed.
In the accompanyingr drawingsl Figure 1 is a view in end elevation with the cover of the washer chamber raised.
Fig. 2 is Aarrear elevation of the same.
In the'views of the vdrawing the character 5 designates the washer chamber or tank and 5a the cover therefor. In rear of the washer is erected a bracket having a vertical part 6 and a horizontal portion 6a that extends toward the front over the opening of the chamber. Erected parallel and secured to the vertical part 6 of the 'bracket is a rod 7. Slidable on the' rod 7 is a weight '8 .normally supported in elevated position by one arm 9 of a bell crank lever. the other arm 9l of said lever being held,
when the lever is in weight supporting posip tion, by means of a wire 10 stretched between the arm 98L and the `forward end of the lhorizontal portion 6a ofthe bracket. The wire 10 contains one or' more fusible members 11 located to be melted bythe heat generated in the event the gasolene of the washer is ignited.
` Connected with the vertical part of the bracket is a pusher 12 having a head 12a at its forward end and a sto pin 12h at its rea'r end. Between the pus .er head 1 2'l and the bracket is a cQilspring 13 tending to vention as claimed.

below and in the path of the weight 8 so that when the latter is released in case of fire the latch 14 is thrown to releasefthe pusher.
The pusher head is located so as to be near thecover 5l when the latter is in open position as best shown in Fig. 1. It is preferable that the cover shall rest when opened in close proximity to the pusher and in 'al slightly inclined position rearward as for example against a bracket 5 secured on the chamber.v This permits the cover to be operated ordinarily Without operating any of the other mechanism. From the construction thus far described it is obvious that when fire occurs in an" open washer the wire containing the fusible members is severed thereby permitting the Weight 8 to fallI and strike the latch 14 thus releasing the pusher which thus impels the cover to closing position.
At the rear of the washer is shown a tank 15 to contain a lire extinguishing material or materials for generating an extinguishing material as well understood. Said tank communicates with the means of a pipe 15, The tank 15 'is provided with plunger 1.6 located to be struck interior of the y washer chamber above the gasolene level by by the falling weight 8 after it passes the latch 14.- to release the extinguishing mate` rial to the washer and nearly at the same l time with the closing of the cover. The extinguishing material and the mechanism for releasing the same to the washer tank can be of any suitable variety and form.'
The forms of the parts -can he changed without departing from the gist of the inlVhat I claimv is:
. 1. Means `for closing the cover of a chamber such as described. comprising, in combinatiom, a weight, thermally controlled means for supporting the ,weighn'a spring actuated pusher to act on the cover if in opened position, and a latch to rhold said pusher under tension vin operative position, said latch located to be released by the weight when the latter falls.
2. In means of the kindndescribed, the combination with a chamber and a cover iio therefor, of means; for :dosing the cover ineiudlntr :i pusher uneonnerted Mtn the cover. and thermuiij; eontroiied means for (causing the actuation ot' the pusher to Close the (zover in the event oi tire in the Chamber.
3). In means of the kind desorihed, tho (combination with u :'hnnher und u cover therefor hinged to stand hy its'own weight in open position. of means for' closing the xover ineuding n pusher unconnected with the (over, und thermally controlled means for causing; the m-tuzztimi oi the pusher to close the over in the event ot' fire in the chamber.
4. in means of the kind described, the eomhiuution with :t chamber :md o, cover t. prei-"or hinged to stnd hv its own weight in open position, of means for closingr the over including n pusher unconnected with the cover, :i hitch for hoidingv said pusher in operable position und :i thern'mliy controlled weight for reieusing huid latch in the event of tire in the eharuher. 4
` in menus of the kind described, the vornhinntion with u vhumher und a Cover therefor hinged to stond hy its own weight in open position, ot menus for elosing'i'the over including n pusher, u \\'ei fht"for e using the actuation of the pusher, and ther` innily r'ontroiled menus for holding said weight in eievnted position und to release the sume to ione the eover in (ruse of fire in the .eh-unibet.
