To `all whom'it may concern.' Y Be it known that' I, JOH'N S. VNICHOLL, a
citizen of the United' States, residing at Cambride, in the county'of'MiddleseX and State of assachusetts, have vinvented-new and useful #Improvements "in Combined Lavatories -andWater-Heaters, of which the following is aAY specification. Y
The present invention relates to lavatories, and more particularly to a'm'eans for combining` therewith a heating device adaptedl to supply'water at a'desired temperature to the lavatory. An object f this invention is to provide a lavatory structure embodying asv a part thereof a heater for supplying heated water at thedesired temperature to the lavatory sion of a lavatory arranged with'a heater and pipe lines fortaking off `Coldwater in and* also for maijntainir'ig the basin of the lavatory at a predetermined heated tem-l perature. j Y f 'The invention further at the provithe `usual manner andfor also'taking a desired quantity of the cold water, heating it and delivering the heated'water to a hot waterfoutlet' of the lavatory. f j With thev foregoing and other objects in view, the invention will be'more fully described hereinafter, 4and will bemore'particularlypointed out in the claims appended.
hereto; ,Y
In the drawings, wherein 'like'vsymbols refer to'likefor corresponding parts throughf out the several views, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a vlavatory constructed `accordinglto the present inventionand combiningft erein the heating and piping features;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof, showino' the draining connections;
ig. 4 is a front elevation of the device, partly in section and disclosing the construction of the water heater embodied in the pedestal and base of the lavatory;
Fig. 5 is a side elevation similar to Fig. 3, showing the pedestal and base in section, and showing the complete drain pipe connections; and Y Fig. 6 is a transverse section taken through the pedestal of the lavatory substantially on the line 6-6 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, 10' designates the basin of a lavatory supported upon a specification of rearsratem.

A rheostat or 'heating element 15'is supported in one side of the container 13 and projects outwardly I through the jacket 14: within an insulatingblock 16 of wood or the like which is interposed inthe jacketr 14:. A cover .plate 17 Tis fitted over the outer end of the opening for same and to permit'easyjaccess theretowhen The container 13is also providedwith a" thermostat lsupported in theside of the container 13 and eXtending outwardly through the block 16 and providedwith a gage or other visual indicatorV 19 which is supported exteriorly of thev ped'estalv 11.
The rheostat 15 is connected-inl any suitable manner to a source of electric energy for energizing thefrheostat to heat water "which is conveyed to the container 13.
The pedestal 11 is provided with a base "the rheostat' to inclose :the
container` 13 Aof considerably less diameterk than that of the 'ped'estal andibeing spaced l concentrically therefrom-to provide an Vinplate 20 suitably secured to the bottomof the pedestal and which is adapted to support an insulating bottom 21 for the container 13, which bottom 21 projects upwardly intoV the container 13 to provide a heat non-conducting wall at the lower end of the pedestal and container. v
This combined lavatory and water heater may be used where there is but one water Ysupplyv pipe 22. The present illustration shows one arrangement of installation and wherein the pipe22 rises at one side of and toward the rear of the lavatory, and has a branch pipe 23 leading to a cold water outlet faucet 24: which .is mounted on the basin Y v of the lavatory. A hand controlled valve 25 is interposed between the pipe 22 and 1ts branch 23 for cutting olf lthe liowof cold" water to the latter, when desired.
The pipe22 is provided, near the base 12 of the lavatory, with a second branch pipe 26 which leads directly into the lower end, ofthecontainer 13 at a point preferably In a combined Y lavatory below that of the rheostat 15. .A hand valve 27 is mounted in the branch pipe 26 for closing off the supply of the water to the c0n miner-13 when desired, and the pipe 26 is alsol providedV with a drain'pipe 28 located `"between the valve 27 and the tank 13 and which is 'controlledvby a drain valve 29 permitting the draining ofthe tank'13 vwhen desired.
-The container 13 Vis connected atits upper end to a hot water supply pipe 30 vwhich is preferably led across theupper end of the .pedestal 11 to theV rear thereof vand conl rnected, with a hot water outlet faucet 31 mounted on the basin 10 and alsoY provided Y with la `hand operated valve 32 for closing off. flow of hot water from the container 13l to the faucet 31...
Whilev any suitable arrangement of the drain pipes for the tank and a basin may. be had,rin the present illustration the basin 30 10 is provided with a drain pipe 33 having theY usual trap therein and which extends downwardly and is connected to the drain pipe 28 leading from the -lower end ofthe tank V13. The connection .between the pipe 33 and pip'e28 is belowy the valve 29so that the basin l() may bedrained independently v ofthe draining'of the tank 13..
V.It `will 4be ap arent thatgthe installation and structure o the combined lavatoryand waterl heater as above set forth requires connection to but one water supplypipe and that the structure of thepedestal embody-` ing thereinfthe vwater heater maintains theV pedestal-andthe basin supported thereonfata warm temperature at all times and supplies cold water'and also hot water at the desired temperature to the basin. Y
It is obvious that various changes and the branches.
thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.
What is claimed is d 'and water heater, a pedestal, a container arranged within the pedestal, heating means in the j pedestal for the-container, a single VWater supply pipe connectedto the bottom ofthe container, an outlet Vpipe connected to the top of the Vcontainer and` leading tol the basin, a branch pipe leading Afrom said su ply pipe to the basin lforacilmitting co d1 water thereto', and draining means connected tothe container'. 2. In a combined lavatory and water heater, a pedestal, a basin mounted on theV pedestal, a.- container arranged within .the pedestal, a single source of 'water supply,
a branch'connected to said sourcerof water supply for supplying cold waterito the.V
basin, a vsecond branch from lsaid sourceof water supply connected to the lower end of the containerV for delivering cold water thereto, a heaterin the pedestal for heating the vwater inthe container, Van outlet pipe connectedto the'ton of the container and i leading to :the basin to supply warm .water thereto, and valves in said branch pipes for permitting manual control'of water-through;
3. In a combined llavatoryfandv l water heater, a pedestal having an outer shell, basin supported on said shell, a container .arranged within theshell, a heat non-con ductingfpacking'between the container, and shell, means for conducting water, to the lower end of thev container, an outlet pipe connected to the upper end of the contalner and Aleading to the basin, and heating means mounted in one side ofthepedestal andprojecting into the container` for '-raisinggthe temperature of the waterftherein.
