I CHAR-LES F. J. SWAIN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
sor'r COLLAR.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. J. SWAIN, a citizen of the United States, residin at the city of Chicago, in the county of ook and State oflllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soft Collars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to shirt collars which 7 are detachable from the garment on which they are worn, and particularly to that class thereof which is known as soft collars. These articles of apparel which are popular on account of the comfort which they afford the wearers, as is well known, quickly become disfigured and soiled. This is due to the fact that being without means of resistance to the movements of the wearer and quickly permeated with perspiration in warm weather, they are pressed down and crushed out of their natural shape. This condition has been partially overcome by the accidental displacement of the elements intended for removal while the fabric portions of the collar are laundried.
It is the object of my invention to provide a collar of the class described, which is simple in construction, in which the removable parts are adapted for intimate and relatively rigid relation to the fabric portions; by which such stiffening devices are secured against accidental displacements or disadjustment, and by which a fully practical,commercial device is obtained.
The principles of my invention are illustrated in the drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a collar provided with my improvements, cer- I tain portions being broken away;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of thesame when opened out to show the outside of the band and the inside of the flap;
Fig. .3 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 2 on the line 33;
Fig. 4 illustrates another embodiment of my device on a similar section;

' Further. describing with ref erence to thedrawings, in which like char 'acters of reference refer to corresponding parts throughout the different views. i
1 18 the band and 2 the flap of a soft rolling or turndown collar. The flap is secured between the plies of the. band by stltching' upon the dotted line 3 in the usual manner. 4 is the inner ply of't'he band; 5 the intermediate ply, and 6 the outer ply next to the flap 2. The ply 6' may be discontinuous extending only to the point 6'. ,It is completed by the shorter portions 7 which overlap the ends 6 at 7. A pocket is thus formed longitudinally of the band, into the end of which, with a longitudinal motion relatively to the collar and to the said pocket, may be inserted the stiffening pieces Q and 10. The forward ends of said stiffening pieces may be ofthe same form so as to be provided, as shown in the drawings, with dilferentoutlines so as to conform themselves to the buttonholes and buttons which are provided for closing the ends of the collar upon each. other. It is one of the objects of my invention to provide means by which such stiffening pieces may besecured against displacement. A practical means of so doing is to form notches 9 and 10 in the ends of the stiffening pieces and to place buttons 11 on the collar band in such position as to engage the rear'ends of the stiffening pieces Within the notches 9 and 10. By so doing the stiffening pieces which by their flexibility be readily sprung into place are positively secured against displacement. v
It is clear that my invention may be embodied in other forms as, for instance, that illustrated in Fig. l which is taken on a section line corresponding to'that on which Fig. 3 is'taken. In this the outer ply of the collar band 16 is extended to the ex- 5 treme ends of the collar, while the receiving pocket for the stiffening device is, provided 105 bya'means of applied pieces 17 extending from the ends of the collar band to form the pocket and having free ends 17'. The stiffening strips are slid into the pockets thus formed and the rear ends are engaged by the buttons 11 as in the other form of my device.
I claim:v Y
1. In a soft removable shirt collar, having said pockets, and means on the band to engage the ends of each of said strips and hold the same in said pockets.
2. In a soft removable shirt collar having 4 15 a neck band and an outer flap secured to the band; a longitudinal pocket at each end of the band having openings transversely thereof, between the ends and the central portion of the collar, a separate flexible stifening strip provided With notches at its inner end longitudinally slidable in each of said pockets, and buttons on the band to engage said stifiening strips Within said notches and hold said strips in place in said pockets.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto sub- CHAS. F. J. SWAIN.
