Be it known that I, ANDREW N. TRUM- e rownn, Sr., a citizen of the United otates, re-
siding at Hagerstown, in the county of Washington and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful improvements in a Combination Railway-Tie and Rail-Fastener, of which the following is a spcciflcation.
rlhe invention relates to a metallic railway tie, and more particularly to the class of combined railway ties and rail fasteners.
The primary obj ect of the invention is the provision of a railway tie of this character, wherein the body of said tie is made from metal, preferably steel7 and is reinforced at opposite sides thereof to render the tie strong, while in the top of the tie are seats accommodating cleats which are adapted to fasten the rails securely upon the tie, the cleats being of novel form and engaged with the top of the tie in a novel manner so as to avoid any possibility of the spreading of the rails laterally upon the tie, yet permitting said rails to move longitudinally under expansion and contraction thereof, resultant from climatic changes.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a railway tie of this character, wherein proper drainage is had from the seats for the cleats which serve to fasten rails upon the tie and thereby prevents water accumulating within the seats which would tend to rust the rails and seats and thereby in time damage both the tie and rails, the cleats being fastened to the tie in a novel manner to firmly hold the rails secure upon the tie.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a railway tie of this character, which is comparatively simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, strong, durable and inexpensive to manufacture and install.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consist-s in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawing in detail:
The railway tie comprises a bodv A, preferably made from metal, siich as steel or the like, and is in the form of an -shaped beam having the vertical central web 5 and top and bottoni horizontal portions 6 and 7 respectively, while arranged on opposite sides of the vertical web 5 between the top and bottom portions 6 and are vertical reinforcing ribs constituting' braces 8, which arge detachably mounted in place upon said body and extend laterally from said web so that their outer edges will be Aflush with the outer edges of the top and bottom portions 6 and of the. body of the tie, the said reinforcing braces S being preferably located immediately beneath the points where the track rails restupon the tie.
Formed in the top portion G, centrally thereof, near opposite ends and disposed longitudinally of said tie, channels or grooves 9, which are adapted to be bridged by the rails 10 of a track when placed upon the top portion 6, of the tie and engageable with these grooves 9 are pairs of cleats ll, which are adapted to fasten the rails 10 upon the tie.
rlhs cleat l1 of each pair is formed with a central ribbed bearing portion i2, having a flange engaging jaw 13 adapted to overhang and engage the base of the rail 10 to be fastened by the cleat, while on the bearing portion l2 of the latter, is a tongue lll, which is adapted to engage in the groove 9, in the top portion 6 of said tie so that the pair of cleats ll will be locked in the groove With which the tongues thereof engage to prevent displacement of the Cleats 11 With respect to each other and thereby avoid the spreading of the rails l0 relative to each other when fastened upon the tie.
Passed through' the bearing portions l2 of the cleats 11 are fasteners l5, which are tapped into the top portion 6 of the body of The tie and in this manner the said Cleats 1l are seenred to the tie for holding` the rails l() of the track fast upon the tie.
