Description

A. R. CLEAR.
ENVELOP OPENER.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 29.11919.
Patented May 10,1921.
A TTORNE Y.
ANDREW R. CLEAR, OF NASHUA, NEW HAIIIPSEIRE.
ENVELOP-OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 10, 1921.
Application filed July 29, 1919. Serial No. 314,026.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW R. CLEAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashua, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Envelop- Openers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for opening envelops and the like and the principal object of the invention is to provide means attached to a table or desk whereby the en velops may be quickly and easily opened.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for forming the cutting member on a stationary part of the device so that there is no danger of said cutting member becoming misplaced or lost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding arts throughout the several views, and in w icl1:
Figure l is a view of a table with my invention attached thereto;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged View of the cutting member;
Fig. 4 is a view of a modification.
In these views 1 indicates the table which has its top edge straight and projecting beyond the legs as shown. 2 indicates the opening device which consists of a board 3 to which is connected the clamps 4 carrying the thumb screws 5. In this way the board is clamped to the edge of the table. An L-shaped piece of metal 6 is secured to said board with one leg thereof projecting downwardly, as shown. A V-shaped recess 7 is formed in one end of this downwardly extending leg adjacent the lower edge thereof so as to leave a pointed part 8 which forms the cutting member. The extreme end of this member is pointed as at 9 so that it will easily enter under the flap of the envelop at the corner thereof and the upper edge of said member is beveled to provide a cutting edge 10.
As the flap of the envelop always has a loose portion at the point adjacent its connection with the body of the envelop, the pointed end 9 can easily be inserted under the flap and then by drawing the envelop along the lower edge of the metal strip, the flap will be severed so that the contents may be removed. 7
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the board 3 is of angle shape and is clamped to the depending flange 11 of the table 1 by means of the clamps 4;. In other respects this form of the device is similar to that before described.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A device of the class described comprising a supporting member, a clamp carried thereby for clamping the same to a support, an angle shaped plate having one flange secured to the supporting member and having its other flange provided with a V-shaped recess which passes through one end of the flange with its lower wall merging into the lower edge of the flange to provide a sharp point, said lower wall being beveled to provide a cutting edge.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ANDRE-W It. CLEAR.
