To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY H. SANFORD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mansfield in the county of Richland and State of @hio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Gaseous and Solid Fuel Ranges, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a combined gaseous and solid fuel range.
The object of the present invention is to provide a range or other heating apparatus that will permit the operator to use solid fuel or gaseous fuel as desired without making it necessary to remove any of the parts, insert any extra parts or otherwise change the range except by shifting of a damper or the like.
The present invention consists in provid ing a combined gaseous and solid fuel range in which means are provided to direct the course of travel of the products of combustion of the solid fuel through flues arranged substantially around the oven and thence out through the ordinary vent or chimney flue and to construct said range so as to provide means for directing the course of travel of the products of combustion of a gaseous burner in an independent path into the oven and from the oven, thence underneath the oven to the ordinary vent or flue pipe, the change being effected by adjusting a single damper to open or closed position in the oven.
These and other objects are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:

in. the drawings reference numeral 1 rep resents the supporting structure of a stove or range, 2 the top, 3 the outer wall of the fire box and 4: the inner wall'of the fire box. To burn solid fuel a grate 5 is secured to the coal fire box 6 and mounted therein in any conventional manner. The inner wall a of the tire box is provided with a pivoted damper 7 which can be operated to open or close the combustion chamber 8 to prevent the heat from the solid fuel from escaping through the opening 18. The oven 9 is mounted in any conventional manner within the compartment 10 so as to provide flues 11, 12 and 13 substantially surrounding the oven. The end wall 14 of the oven provides one wall 01 the combustion chamber and the inner fire box wall 4 provides the other and the flanges 15 and 16 complete the combustion chamber 8. The flanges can be made integral with the oven or attached thereto as found most desirable.
A burner 17 is mounted in the combustion chamber and it preferably extends across the entire width of the chamber as shown in the figure. Beneath the burner 17 body portion is cut away to provide an opening 18 for the purpose of permitting the air to enter into the chamber and mix with the gaseous fuel and to permit the removal and insertion of the burner conveniently. Adjacent to the top of the oven end wall 14: an opening 19 is provided through which the products of combustion from the gaseous burner enter the oven. Adjacent to the bottom of the oven an adjustable damper 20 is provided to permit the escape of the products of combustion from the burner into the fine 12; thence underneath the oven through flue 13 around the baflle plate 21 and out through the vent or chimney flue 22.
.The operation of the combined gaseous and solid fuel range is as follows:
When it is desired to use solid fuel the damper 7 is preferably closed. The proclucts of combustion of the solid fuel passes from the fire box 6 through the flues 11 12 and 18 around the baiile plate 21 and out through the vent or chimney flue 22. The damper 20 is closed during the burning of solid fuel to prevent the products of combustion from the solid fuel from entering the oven. In the use of gaseous fuel the dampers 7 and 20 are adjusted to open position and the products of combustion from the burner pass into the oven through the opening 19 and out through the damper 20 to the flue 13 underneath the oven around the baffle plate 21 and escape through the vent or chimney flue 22.
T claim:
1. Tn a combined gaseous and solid fuel stove, an oven secured within the stove having communicating flues surrounding the oven except at one end, said end being spaced apart from and secured to and in close proximity to the fire box to form an independent flue, means to close the top of the last mentioned flue, a damper secured in said flue, a burner for gaseous fuel located at the bottom of said flue.
2. In a combined gaseous and solid fuel stove, an oven secured Within the stove having communicating flues surrounding the oven except at one end, said end being spaced apart from and secured toand in close proximity to the fire box to form an independent flue, means to close the top of the last mentioned flue a damper secured in said flue, being adapted to close off a portion of said flue when solid fuel is being burned and opened When gaseous fuel is 10 being burned, a burner for gaseous fuel located in said flue, a flue and deflector being located beneath the oven.
