TIME HAND-STAMP.
Application filed August 29,- 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH S. PACKARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Time Hand-Stamps, of which the following is a specification.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a new and improved construction of time hand-stamp of the character ordinarily equipped with interchangeable dates, a lower fixed time dial-stamp, a movable pointer to cooperate therewith, an upper exposed indicating dial for guiding the user of the stamp in correctly positioning said pointer, and a handle equipped with an index finger for cooperation with said exposed dial and having connected with its lower end the aforesaid pointer, the purpose being that on the angular movement of the handle, the
index finger connected therewith and the pointer embodied in the stamp proper may have corresponding movement.
The object of my invention is to provide a stamp having, in many of its details, an improved construction and particularly one having novel and durable means for locking the handle in its various adjustments. One purpose of my invention is to provide an extremely durable hand-stamp and one whose parts may be readily constructedand assembled.
The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in central vertical section, of atime hand-stamp constructed in accordance with and embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same, taken on the dotted line of Fig 1.?
Fig. 3 is a vertical section, with the handle partly broken away, of the same, taken at right angles to the sectional part of Fig. 1 and being on the dotted line 8-3 of Fig. 2;

suitable shape and character, and 14 a metal frame having an upper ferrule portion 15 to receive the lower endof said handle, a. lower disk portion 16 to engage the upper surface of said base 10, a hub 17 to enter a central hole 18 in said base 10 and a lower hub 19 which extends downwardly below the lower surface of said base 10 and is encircled by a washer 20 which engages the lower surface of the base 10 and is secured by screws 21 to the hub portion 17 of the frame 14.
The frame 14 is secured to the base 10 by the engagement therewith of the disk portlon 16 wlth the upper surface of said base and by the engagement with the lower surface of said base of the washer 20, and said frame 14 1s capable of being turned angularly, the handle 13 being provided for turning said frame and parts connected there-- with and also for impressing the stamp 12 upon the paper or other fabric requiring the mpression. The handle 13 may be secured in the ferrule portion 15 of the frame 14 by means of a screw 22. The stamp 12 may be secured to the cushion 11 by a suitable adhesive in the ordinary manner, and said stamp 12 will have thereon an annular time dial stamp 23 for indicating hours, quarter and half hours, or other subdivisions, as shown in Fig. 4, and also such miscellaneous type matter 24, as the word Received, as may be desired. The stamp 12 has a central opening 25, and said stamp is open, as at 26, to expose the interchangeable date type 2'? which are applied within a recess 128 in the cushion 11.
The cushion 11 contains a central opening, in line with the aforesaid opening 25 in the stamp 12, and into this opening in said cushion the lower end of the hub 19 of the frame 14 extends, and the lower end of said hub '19 contains a dove-tail groove 28 to receive a correspondingly shaped rib 29 on the upper end of an auxiliary. cushion or bumper, as the part is commonly known, 30, as shown inFig. 3. The bumper 30 is held to the frame 14 by the engagement of its rib 29 with the surfaces of the slot 28, and said bumper has angular movement co":-
responding with that of the frame 14 and adapted to be moved along the lines and figures of the time dial 23 on said stamp 12, said pointer, time dial 23 and stamp 12 be;

The base 10 has upon its upper surface, suitably formed recess in the middle upper and preferably directly formed therein anl annular exposed time dial 33 corresponding in divisions and subdivisions with the dial 23 on the stamp 12. The base 10, cushion 11 and stamp 12 are always in fixed relation to each. other, while the handle 13, frame 14, bumper and auxiliary stamp 31' are capable of angular movement about the vertical axis of said handle.
The base 10 may be formed of a plate of sheet metal, and preferably is soformed, and said base at its opposite side edges is formed with downwardly extending flanges 33 between which the upper edge portions of the sides of the cushion 11 are snugly received, and the base 10 along the vertical edges of its opening 18 is formed with serrations or teeth 34, as more particularly shown in Fig. 2, these serrations orteeth 34 being integral with the base 10 and therefore of permanent character and in fixed location. I regard thesheet metal base 10 of special advantage in view of its durable nature and the ease with which it may be produced.
, The serrations or rigid teeth 34 cooperate with a dog 35 which is in the form of a pin entered within a transverse hole or recess 36 in the base of the frame 14, said recess being partly in the disk member 16 and partly in the hub member 17 of said frame, as shown in Fig. 1. The dog 35 has a blunt inner end and presses against a small coiled spring 37 placed within the inner end of the said recess or hole 36, and in consequence of which said dog 35 has a spring tension outwardly. The dog 35 has a lower pointed projection 38 which is in line and adapted to interlock with the teeth 34, and an upper projecting index finger 39 which rides upon theupper surface of the base'plate 10 and is adapted for coiiperation with the numbers and lines on the upper exposed dial 33, as shown in Fig. 2. The projection 38 will snap into any of the recesses between the teeth or serrations 34 as the handle 13 is turned angularly and serve to lock said handle in its adjusted position while thereafter the handle and stamp are used to make the proper impression. The-finger 39 coliperates with the dial 33 in guiding the operator in turning the handle 13 and arresting the same at theproper position to indicate on the stamps 12, 31 the proper time to be impressed on the paper or other article to receive the stamp ing. The frame 14 is in one integral piece, and the base plate 10 is in one integral piece, and these two parts are therefore very durable, and said frame 14 affords a proper to secure by Letters housing for the combined dog and index finger 35, the material of the base 10 serving to restrain said dog in operative position.
The washer 20 is of metal and is within a The subdivisions of the dial 33 and those of the dial 23 correspond with each other, so that the user of the stamp, by turning the handle 13, may set the, pointer 32 with proper relationto the dial 23 by merely observing the index finger 39 in its relation to the dial 33, it not being necessary, with,
my construction, to turn the hand stamp upside down and set the pointer 32, although that operation may be performed without detriment to a portion of my invention and without departure therefrom. The exposed face dial 33 and the projection 39 on the dog 35 are provided for the convenience of the operator, but if said dial 33 and projection 39 were entirely omitted, the. hand stamp would be thoroughly operative, but under such condition the user of the stamp would have to turn the stamp upside down and by turning the handle 13 set the pointer 32 at the desired position on the time dial 23. The preferred construction is that shown in the drawings and embodying the upper face dial 33 and index finger 39. It is to be noted, however, that the index 39 instead of being formed on the dog pin 35, may be simply a line, arrow or other indication on the upper surface of the disk-flange 16, in accordance with; prior art procedure. I prefer, however, that the index 39 be formed integrally with the dog pin 35.

1. A time hand-stamp comprising a baseplate having a hole therein whose edge is serrated throughout the thickness of said plate, a frame having a hub within and reasonably filling said hole, a lower hub extending below said plate, a disk-flange which engages the upper face of said plate about said hole and means for receiving a handle, said ,hub within said hole having a transverse recess therein, a washer around said lower hub and engaging the lower surface of said plate and connected to said frame, a spring-actuated pin in said transverse recess affording an index finger at the upper side of said plate and a dog within said hole to engage said serrations on the angular adjustment of said frame, a handle on the upper end of said frame, a fixed time-dial on the upper face of said plate with which said index finger cooperates, a fixed stamp at the lower side of said base-plate bearing a timedial, and a pointer stamp connected with the lower end of said frame and movable therewith for cooperation with said stamp dial.
2. A time hand-stamp comprising a baseplate having a vertical hole therein whose edge is serrated throughout the thickness of said plate, a frame having a hub within and reasonably filling said hole, a lower hub which extends below said base-plate, a diskfiange which engages the upper surface of said plate about said hole and means for receiving a handle, a washer engaging the lower surface of said plate and fastened to said frame, a spring-actuated dog carried by said frame within said hole to engage said serrations on the angular adjustment of said frame, a' handle on the upper end of said frame, a fixed time-dial on the upper face of said base-plate, an index carried by said frame for cooperation with said dial, a fixed stamp connected with the lower side of said base-plate bearing atime-dial, and a pointerstamp connected with the lower end of said frame and movable therewith for cooperation with said stamp dial.
3. A time hand-stamp comprising a baseplate having a hole therein whose edge is serrated, a frame extended into said hole and having a disk-flange engaging the upper surface of said plate, a washer engaging the lower surface of said plate and fastened to said frame, a spring-actuated dog carried by said frame within said hole to engage said serrations on the angular adjustment of said frame, a handle on the upper end of said frame, a fixed time-dial on the upper face of said base-plate, an index carried by said frame for cooperation with said dial, a fixed stamp connected with the lower side of said base-plate bearing a time-dial, and a pointer-stamp connected with the lower end of said frame and movable therewith for cooperation with said stamp dial, said frame being extended below said washer and having in its lower end a dove-tail groove, and said pointer-stamp comprising a facing and a bumper whose upper end has a dove-tail rib fitting said groove.
4. A time hand-stamp comprising a baseplate having a vertical hole therein whose edge is serrated throughout the thickness of said plate, an integral one-piece frame having a hub within and reasonably filling said hole, a lower hub which extends below said base-plate, a disk flange which engages the upper surface of said plate about said hole, means for receiving a handle and a transverse recess within the outline of said hole, a washer engaging the lower surface of said plate and fastened to said frame, a spring-actuated pin in said recess afi ording an index finger at the upper side of said plate and a dog to engage said serrations on the angular adjustment of said frame, a handle on the upper end of said frame, a fixed time dial on the upper face of said plate with which said index finger cooperates, a fixed stamp at the lower side of said base-plate bearing a time-dial, and a pointer stamp connected with the lower end of said frame and movable therewith for cooperation with said stam dial.
