" LOCKING ionvicn.
To all whom it may concema Be it known that I, JOHN ELGIMPERLING, a citizenvof the United States',gresiding"at Daytoinin the county of Montgomery. and State of- Ohio, have inventedjcertain' new and useful Improvements in Locking Devices, of which the following is afspecifiaccompanying drawing;
This invention relates to locking devices,
and more especiallyto anti-theft locks for securing certain levers of a motor vehicle to prevent unauthorized use orj'theft thereof.
The invention is an. improvement on theanti-theft lock which forms the subject matter of Patent No; 1,318,443, issued to. me
October 14th, 1919, and has for its par ticular object to" provide a simple, effective locking device, practically indestructible and incapable of being tampered, andwhich may readily be secured'toone of the foot: levers, preferably tlieclutch lever, to lockfthe same in operative position. An object of the present inventionlistoprovidea lock having the general character; istics of my earlier invention above referred to and which will be simpler and cheaper to manufacture and whichwill be of smaller dimensions and better proportions, and
therefore neater in appearanceand more convenient to use.
I In the form here shown my invention con-E sists of anintegralframe or' locking block;
preferably formed of sheetme tal, andhav-Q ing a plurality of longitudinal channels eX tending therethrough to adapt the frame to extend over the. stem of the foot leverand i to properly position thesame; relative thereto and to the floor ofthe ,vehicle, suitable means being provided to lock the device in position when the same has been adjusted relative to the lever,
is to. provide one or more spring clamps'in connection withone-of the longitudinal channels of the locking frame adapted to.
- embrace the stemiof "the foot lever to hold the frame yieldingly in fixed relation to thelever-to preventgside play or lateral movement of the frame relative to the lever. It will be understood, however, that these clamps are not essential to the effectiveness of the locking devices, but are more in the nature of'a refinement which effect aline-r and to the floor of the vehicle.
.suit the conditions of construction.

respectively, of a modified form'of the lockri s. and 6.1

having three longitudinal channels 2, 3. and 4 formedtherein to stiffen, thev frame'an'd properly positionthe same relatively tothef foot lever, the channels ashere shown also being 'rectangularly shaped in crosssection.
The opposite ends 5'6 of the frame" 1, as
here shown, are inclinedat different} angles to the body of the frame to .adaptthe same respectively to the tread of the foot lever c It will be obvious ofa course, that these ends maybe in.- clined at any, suitable angles to adapt the frameito the foot lever and floor of different makes of automobiles and other motor'vehi- 'cles, therelative angles here shown beingfor illustrative purposes only.
gage of sheet steel, will be practically in- 1 -destructiblev; Y
; In connection withthe central channel 3, which isthe one adapted to receive the stem; 7 i ofthefoot lever, oneor Inores'pring clamps ;A further object of thejpresent invention 7 maybe used, two clamps being here shown,
to adjustithelocking frame relativeto the foot lever, that is to say,i to properly po'sl-t the channel any suitable distance to best To complete the frame as a locking fixture, a hasp 8 is secured to'one side thereof in a manner to adapt the hasp to extend over the -i opposite face of the block having a tongue r echannelf3,a staple dbeing secured in the f frame o'n'the'opposite side of'the channel to "receive the end of the hasp. VA suitable 7 Q tails of {construction, the application-and a operationof the device relative to the'foot lock, such asa padlock,n 1aybejemployed to lock thehasp in closedpositionand thus secure the frame to the lever in such a manner as to prevent operation thereof. v c The hasp and staple may be secured to the The" form ofglocking device shown in Figs. 5'" and Band 7, relates to modified de- Tlever b ng substantially the same as in the other form of the device shown in Figs. 1+4.
The'modifications consist in making the entire device intwo pieces, the hasp' 10 be- 7, ing made detachable,havinga bent end or tang-11811 adapted tolproject 1nto-aslot 12 formed in the face 'ofthe locking block on one sideof the, longitudinal channel 3,.the
13 formed thereon integrally with the metal of the block, and adapted to cooperate with i5 the application of -a suitable padlock to se i 1 a, slot 14; in theopposite ends of fthehasp. Thus the hasp may be applied to "the block: 1 without any riveting of parts, the tongue 13 beingfprovided with an aperture 15 for cure the closedihasp to the block.
' 'Theclamping springs 16 as shoWninthe c-inodified construction are preferably formed Imotor'--'v fehicle comprising adocking block integrallywith the metal ofthe block, thus entirely eliminating the use of 'rivetsin the -lockingdevice.; Y From the foregoingdetail description the construction andapplication ofmyimproved locking device will be apparent. It
will be noted that the lock is small, of sima' ple; construction" and neat appearance, prac- .ticallyi indestructible and" inifalf respects,
w'ellfldapted to the-purposes-of the invention z.-
I p Having thus fully described my inven-1 tionpwhatl claim as new andde'sire to secur'e byJLetters Patent, is

and having a longitudinal channel/formed v I therein'xto receive the stem of the foot lever,
and a spring clamp arranged in said channel to embrace said stem whereby to hold 7 the locking block yieldingly in normal relah tion to said-lever, and means to lock the e to said lever;
said lever;
2. 'Alocking device for a foot lever of a frame in saidrelatively fixed relation to 'motor; vehicle comprising a locking .rblock adapted1tobe interposed between the tread. portion of said lever and the floor of the vehicle to lockthe lever in raised position,
andhaving' a longitudinal channel formed therein to receive the stem of the, foot lever and aplurality of spring clamps arranged in saidchannel, one adjacent'the opposite ends of the channel to embrace the upper and lower portions of said stem whereby toholdfthe'flocking block yieldinglyf in normal relation to saidlever,and means to lock the frame, inrs'aid relatively fixed relation 3. A locking device fora foot lever of a 'motor'vehicleqcomprising aflocking block adapted to be interposed between the tread portion of said lever and the floor of the vehicle to lock the lever in raised position,
and having a; longitudinal channel formed therein to receive the'stem of the foot lover,
a slotfornied in the face of the block adj acent the channel on one side and a tongue adapted to cooperate with said slot vand tonguefto close the open side of said channel. l A 7 4i; Alockingdevice for a foot lever of a motor vehicle comprising a locking block adapted to beinterposed between the tread portion'of said lever-and the floor of the vehicle to lockthe lever i'n'raised position, and having "a longitudinal channel formed raised from its opposite face, and a hasp therein to receive the stem of the foot lever,
a slot formed in the face of theblock adj acent'the channel on one side and a tongue raised from its opposite face, and a detachc able hasp havinga tongue formed at one of 7 its ends to enter said slot and a slot formed at its opposite end to receive the tongue formed on the face of the housing whereby the hasp' maybe secured on the block to close the open side of said channel.
' 5; A locking device for afoot lever of a motor vehicle comprisinga locking block adaptedto be interposed between the tread portion ofsaid lever and'the floor of the vehicle to lock the lever in raised position,
and having alOngitudinal channel formed therein to receive the stem of the foot lever,
and one or more spring clamps formed integrally with the walls ofthe channel and inclined inwardly therefrom to embrace said stem and to position the locking block' relativelyto said footlever. t v c In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
