Be it known that I, HENRY TAYLOR, a

V citizen of the United States, residing'at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in a Book-Support and lVriting-Table, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to adjustable supporting means which may be utilized either as a table oras a sup-port fora book, magazine or analogous article, the device being adjustable in any one of its uses to suit the convenience of the person utilizing the same.

One of the principal objects of the incharacter herein stated, which while adjustable may likewise be folded into compact form so as to'be out of the way and occupy a comparatively small space when not required for immediate service.

The drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of theinvention, however, it is to be understood that in adapting'the same to meet diflerent conditions, various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the several views of the drawings in like reference characters.

The appliance comprises a support, a clamp, and a plurality of intermediate connections.

and an element of the intermediate connection between the clamp and support is pivotall'y connected thereto by means of a fastening 6 which consists of a threaded element made fast at one end to the member 1 and having its opposite end portion threaded to receive a nut 7. A fastening of this natureis utilized foradjustably connecting the several elements or parts comprising the lntermediate eonnecting'means.

A rod 8 has one end flattened and overlapping the extended end of the member 1 and secured thereto by means of'a fastening 6.

A sleeve 9 is provided nearv the free end of the rod 8 and receives a screw 10. A second rod 11 is adjustable in the sleeve 9 and secured therein in the adjusted position by means of the screw 10.- The free end of the rod 11 is flattened and overlaps the flattened end of a-rod 12, the two rods 11 and 12 being adjustably connected by means of a fastening 6. A sleeve 13 is provided at the outer end of the rod 12 and receives a screw 14. A rod 15 is adjustable in the sleeve 13 secured therein by means of the screw 14. A rod or like part 16 is adjustably connected to the free end of the rod 15 by means of a. fastening 6. A rod or like part 17 is adjustably connected to the outer end of the rod 16 by means of a fastening 6. A short member 18 is adjustably connected to the free end of the part 17 by means of a fastening 6, and the part 18 preferably consists of a flat element having an end portion folded, to receive between the folded parts an element 19 which is adedge of the support 20 and springs 22 at the ends of the rod 21, are connected at their free ends by means of a rod which parallels the rod 21. The rod 23 is yieldably held in water? with the s pp rt 20 by mean o the springs 22. A finger piece 24 projects from the rod 23 and provides convenient means for moving the rod 23 away from the support 20 when it is required to place a book or like article in position upon the support so as to be held in convenient position to be read.

The support 20 may be adjusted tona variety of positions either vertically or horizontally, provision being had for the various adjustments by means of the plurality of sections or parts forming the intermediate connecting means between the support and the clamp. When the support 20 is adjusted to occupy a horizontal position it may be used as a table, for receiving any article to be supported. When adjusted so as to occupy an upright position the support 20 may be used as a rest for receiving a book, magazine or the like. The clamp admits of the device being readily attached to the arm or back of a chair or to any other convenient supporting means. When the device is not required for immediate service it may be folded into compact form and turned so as to be out of the way substantially as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. To prevent interference of the connecting parts with one another their end portions are laterally offset so that the connecting members or parts may clear one another as will be readily comprehended.

For convenience of supporting an ink bottle a clip 25 is provided and attached to one of the parts as 11, such clip being shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

The foregoing description and the drawings have reference .to what may be consid ered the preferred, or approved, form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the ap ended claims.

aving thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A book support comprising a book rest, a clamp adapted to grip an overhanging member, linkages interconnecting the clamp and rest allowing a universal movement in positioning the book rest and the collapsing of the members below the overhanging member, said linkages including an extension of said clamping member coplanar therewith to extend the overhanging member and a pivoted joint at the end of said extension to a rod, a longitudinal eye in said rod, an extension bar slidable in said eye provided with a member pivoted to its end and slidably mounting a set of pivoted members.
