UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. HOWELL', OF MIDDLETOWN, DELAWARE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE HALF HIS RIGHT TO HENRY D. HOWELL, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN JUMP-SEATS FOR WAGONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,681, dated April 8, 1&73; application tiled October 31, 1872.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES H. HOWELL, of Middletown, in the county of New Castle and in the State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jump- Seat for Oarriages; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the con struction and arrangement of the arms and bars for supporting and operating a jump-seat for vehicles, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section, of my carriage-seat. Fig. 3 shows a bar attached at each end on the under side of the seat.
A represents a carriage-box, and B is the seat. At each end of the seat B is a slot, a, along the inner edge of which, on the under side of the seat, is secured a metal bar, O, having at its rear end, on the outer edge, an ear, b, projecting upward into the slot a. At the outer end, on the same edge of the bar, is
a downward-projecting ear, d, as shown particularly in Fig. 3. To this ear d is pivoted the upper end of an arm, D, the lower end of which is pivoted to a bar, E, at or near its front end, said bar E being fastened on the inner side of the carriage-box A. To the ear b is pivoted another arm, G, which is bent, as shown, and its lower end pivoted to the rear end of the bar E under the panel of the box. This arm or leg G is thus pivoted back of the front line of the panel, its upper part working in the slot at of the seat, and extends over the panel when the seat is thrown back.
When the seat is thrown forward the leg or arm G rests upon the sill-piece of the box or other support under it.
I am aware that jumpseats for vehicles are not new, and I do therefore not claim such principle broadly; but
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the box A, seat B with slots a, bars O with ears b d, bars E, and legs D Gr, all constructed and arranged substan tially as and for the purposes herein set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of October, 1872.
