- S. W. SHRYOCK.
Metal Drill.
Patented Nov. .6; 1855. 7
N. PETERS. Pholoflmhu hu Washinglon. D. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIfiE.
SAML. W. SHRYOGK, OF I-IOPKINSVILLE, KENTUCKY.
DRILLING AND BORING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 13,766, dated November 6, 1855.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL l/V. SHRYooK, of Hopkinsville, in the county of Christian and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Drilling and Boring Machines; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and opera tion of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the ma chine, and Fig. 2 a section through the axis of the boring shaft and line a: w of Fig. 1.
Similar characters of reference in the several figures denote the same part of the machine.
The nature of my invention consists in combining in a manner hereafter to be described, the rests upon which the article to be bored is placed and the revolving drill;
so that the said rests may rise with any degree of velocity as the boring progresses, by the action of the drilling mechanism, and at the will of the operator; the rests being capable of removal at will, so that articles of various forms and dimensions may be operated upon, by the attachment of the proper rests, the power being steam, animal or manual, as may be desired, the precise construction and operation being as follows: A suitable frame A having been constructed the drill shaft 13 is arranged perpendicularly in bearings with the drill or bit 0 pointing downward as shown in the drawings, A shaft C, is also inserted in its bearings, horizontally and at right angles to the shaft 13, to which it is geared by the bevel wheels a b or their equivalents. It is driven by power applied through a band passing over the pulley D, or by manual power applied to the crank I as occasion may require, A third shaft E is placed horizontally behind the upright which supports the drill shaft, and has leaves, or a small pinion 2) upon it which plays into a rack F, moving up and down, and guided in a slot Z. A cap piece m which supports the rests n n is attached through said slot to, and holds the rack in place. A pulley H provided with a series of grooves e e, &c., whose diameters increase in'order, is fixed upon the shaft E while a loose pulley G having a similar series of correspondingly diminishing grooves e e, &.c., is placed upon the driving shaft C. A band (l, connects the pulleys moving in. such of their grooves as will give the desired speed to the shaft E. A disk 9 is connected with the loose pulley G by a tube or hollow shaft 8 surrounding the shaft .0, and is provided with pins 2' i projecting a little distance parallel with its axis. A lever f fits over the tube 8 and has one end attached by a joint to some part of the frame A while the other end is left free to be moved as desired for the purpose of sliding the pulley G on its shaft to couple it thereto, or uncouple it therefrom. A pin it projects perpendicularly from the shaft 0, in such a position that the pins 2' z of said disk may be brought against it and thus couple the pulley G to the shaft C.
lVhen the driving shaft C is turned the drill or bit 0 revolves and by coupling the loose pulley G to its shaft as above described, the article to be bored (which is placed upon the rests n n) is moved upward against said drill or bit with a velocity compared with that of the bit, varying accordi'ig to the particular grooves of the pulleys G H, in which the band (Z runs. As soon as the article is'bored through or to the required depth, the pulley G is uncoupled from its shaft, and the rests n a with said article 'fall by their own weight, without requiring the driving shaft to be stopped, or its motion reversed, and then the loose pulley is again coupled to its shaft, and the article again bored as before.
Having described my invention and the operation of the same, what I claim my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Supporting the rests nby rack F and pinion 10 of shaft E and combining the same with movable and fixed pulleys G and H as herein set forth, so that the rests may be moved upward with any required velocity, or be dropped from the drill, at the will of the operator, during the revolution of the boring shaft as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand before two subscribing witnesses.
