To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED E. V101;- STROM, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Files, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

The invention relates to extension supports or slides for small filing drawers, or drawers for card indexes, envelops and similar articles, in which it is desirable to support the entire drawer in front of the case for access to all parts of the same; and the improvement consists in providing a simple and easily operated sheet metal two-part slide extension in which the drawer is supported upon the inner slide and held in alinement by spaced lugs on each side thereof, the outer slide being attached to the case and the other slide removably insertible within said outer slide, said slides being so shaped that they can easily be struck up by means of suitable dies and presses, thereby making it easy to standardize the construction so that it can be manufactured economically yet providing a simple and durable slide drawer support which is easy of operation; and the invention consists in the novel features and combinations hereinafter set forth and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the case, the upper part being broken away and the drawer shown in dotted outline with the slides partially withdrawn from the case showing the mannenof inserting the drawer in the inner slide at each side. Fig. 2 shows end and inner side elevations of the slide portion which is attachable to the case; and Fig. 3 shows similar views of the inner extension slide; and Fig. 4% shows similar views of the assembled extension slide parts in the closed position. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the drawer in the inverted position showing the spaced guide lugs on the opposite sides and their extension below the bottom of said drawer to form angular alining guides. Fig. 6 is an elevation of a blank from the inner side of the inner end of the inner slide portion, showing the peculiar shape of the same in order to inclose and hold the peculiarly shaped double leather or soft bumper; and Fig. 7 is an elevation of the outer side of said extension slide portion inner end with one of the blisters through which said outer part is spot welded or riveted to the sheet metal case, and the arrangement of the stops and flanges on said slides; and Fig. 10 is a crosswise sectional view of theklrawer supported within the case on the extension slides.

The numeral 15 designates the supporting case; and the numeral 16 the outer extension slide part, and the numeral 17 the inner extension slide part.

The outer extension slide part 16 has the bl sters 18 punched therein simultaneously with the shaping of the part by suitable dies, whlch blister 18 extends from the inner side toward the casing 15 as shown in Figs. 8 and 9 and in dotted outline in Fig. 2, which blisters may be either round or square, but should have sufiicient flat surface for spot welding or riveting to the case 15, preferably about three blisters to the outer slide part 16 for attachment to the case at each side of the drawer opening.

Said outer extension slide part 16 is shaped as shown in section and end elevation with an upper flange 19 for about the front one-half portion of its length and has the upturned stop lug 20 at its rear end. The

rear portion 21 of the slide 16 instead of being turned down as in the front portion, extends upward against the inner wall of-the case. The bottom flange 22 has the lengthwise angular upward groove 23 formed therein to provide a supported side for the groove 24 for the lower edge of the inner extension slide 17, the outer edge 25 being extended down to support the flange formed by the upturned portion 23 and hold the same firmly in line throughout the length of said extension slide part 16.

This arrangement also provides means for holding the inner slide part 17 firmly in line as it slides backward and forward, and also inner slide part 17 has the spaced return bend upper flange 26 which slidably fits within the upper flange 19 of the slide 16 and also has a bottom flange 27 which is shaped similar to the bottom flange 22 on the outer slide and slidably fits within the same,

the bent-up portion 28 being shaped to extend out over the bent-up portion 23.

The upper flange 26 has the cut-away portion 29 to receive therethrough the spaced angular guide lugs 30 and 31 which are attached on each side of the drawer 32 and extending beneath the bottom of the same a spaced distance so as to hold said drawer v in alinement within the bottom flange 27 of the inner drawer slide 17, the drawer 32 being proportioned as to width groove so that the outwardly turned angular lugs 30 and 31 will enter the inner slides 17 on y the opposite sides of the case as shown in Fig. 1 and drop into the lower groove 27 so that said slides 17 can carry the drawer backward and forward, supporting it firmly in position as said inner slides 17 are sup- 7 ported and held within the outer slides 16. The lugs 30 are attached on the opposite sides of the rear end of the drawer 32 and the stops 31 about midway of the drawer length to permit the extreme withdrawal of I the drawer one-half its length, yet support it in said extreme extended position. The

drawer is supported and slides upon the inner slides 17 on its drawer bottom thereby firmly supporting said drawer throughout its entire length.

The inner slide 17 is provided with end stops or bumpers 33 at the front end and 34 at the rear end for the drawer to render the operation of said drawer and the slide 17 as noiseless as possible. The rear bumper 34 is a two-way bumper, having the rearwardly lower extending portion 35. The rear end portion of the inner slide 17 is L-shaped as shown in Fig. 6 so that said rear end portion may be bent around and inclose the bumper 34 35, leaving the upper portion exposed toward the drawer stop 20 and the rear portion 35 exposed toward the inner wall of the case.

A slot 36 is provided in the slide 17 into which the tongue or lug 37 extends after bending around and inclosing the bumper 34 35, extending through said slot 36 a suflicient distance to be riveted into holding tension on the drawer slide 17 so that said bumper 34 35 is held firmly in position and cannot be pushed aside or bent in performing its double office. Thebumper 33 at the forward end of the slide 17 is inclosed by means of the spaced return end bend flange 38 which holds said leather bumper 33 firmly in position. The cut-away portion 29 in the upper flange 26 begins a short disping out when drawn forward with an extra amount of energy, holding the parts all firmly in position.

When said drawer is in the extended position, the bumper 34 engages the stop 20 on the rear end of the flange 19, thereby holding a suflicient portion of the inner slide 17 within the outer slide 16 which is attached to and accordingly a part of the case 15 so that the weight of the drawer, even though heavily loaded, will be strongly supported in the extended position in front of the case so that all parts of said drawer are exposed and easy of access.

The ease with which the inner extension slides 17 may be inserted sidewise within the outer slides 16 is apparent, said parts are easy to assemble or disassemble and all, parts may be struck up by means of suitable dies.

I claim as new:

1. In an extension drawer support, outer slides having top and bottom guides, inner slides having top and bottom guides engaged with the respective guides of the outer slides, the bottom guides of the inner slides each having an upwardly facing groove, a drawer slidingly supported on the bottom guides of the inner slides, and guide members on the drawer extending below the drawer bottom and formed to lie spaced above the bottom wall of the inner slide bottom groove and to engage the oppoposite side walls of said inner slide bottom groove.

2. In a drawer support, slides having sides and inner drawer supports spaced from the sides, a drawer slidingly supported on the inner drawer supports, and guides borne by the drawer and extending below the bottom thereof, said guides being formed to having their lower ends free of engagement with the slides and their sides guidingly engaged by the inner drawer supports and the sides of the slides.

3. In a drawer support, outer slides and inner slides, upper guides borne by the respective slides and lower guides borne by the respective slides, the lower guides of the outer slides having free parts which extend at an angle and the lower guides of the inner slides having parts adapted to ride on said free parts and to spring thereover and into the lower guides of the outer slides.

4:. In a drawer support, outer slides and inner slides, upper guides borne by the respective slides and lower guides borne by the respective slides, the lower guides of the outer slides having grooves the outer walls of which have free parts which extend downwardly at an incline, and the lower guides of the inner slides having parts formed to ride over and spring into the grooves and to conformably engage said inclined parts.

5. In a drawer support, outer slides having top and bottom flanges, the latter extending upwardly to form grooves, then outwardly and finally downwardly at an incline, and inner slides having top flanges engageable with the top flanges of the outer slides and having bottom flanges which conformably engage the bottom flanges of the outer slides and the inclined side of the latter and which are insertible sidewise by riding on the inclined parts and subsequently springing into the top and bottom flanges of said outer slides.

6. In a drawer support, outer slides having top and bottom flanges, each shaped to form grooves, and inner slides having top flanges engageable with and receivable in the top flanges and grooves respectively of the outer slides and having bottom flanges engageable with the flanges of and receivable in the grooves of the bottom flanges of the outer slides, the bottom flanges of the outer slides being formed with means to allow the flanges of the inner slides to move thereover and spring into sidewise engagement with the grooves of the outer slides.

7. In a drawer support, slides having grooves, a drawer, and L-shaped lugs secured at one end to the drawer sides and projecting below the drawer bottom, said lugs being formed to be received in alining and holding engagement within yet above the bottom walls of the grooves of the slides so that the drawer may rest on the slide.

8. In a drawer support, slides having grooves, a drawer, and guide members rigidly carried by the drawer and projecting below the drawer bottom, said lugs being formed to be received in alining and holding engagement within yet above the bottom walls of the grooves of the slides so that the drawer may rest on the slide.
